there was just a spot during the duke game on espn featuring art heyman...i'm prob 1 of the older guys on this site & wondering if anyone else remembers heyman when he played for duke in the early 60's...i know pt1guard does...heyman's contemporaries were, among others, cazzie russell, jerry lucas, larry siegfried, john havlicek (HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL!!! HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL!!! HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL!!!...thanks to the departed celts announcer johnny most), barry kramer (now a ny state judge), jerry west, and a babe magnet named cotton nash who starred for kentucky under hc adolph rupp...nash was also a baseballer, played for cotuit in the cape cod summer league, & taught me 2 things during a chance encounter when i was a starry-eyed high school soph: the importance of wrist follow-through when jumpshooting & good manners w/ females...as it turned out, he was right on both counts...anyone where he is?...well, just rambling, seeing art heyman jogged a few memories...gl, caper

I know he auctioned off his Duke memorabilia and said he didn't want anything else to do with Duke, I don't know of any UNC players who would every want to do that lowell.

caper, i never saw heyman play in college, but i def. read about him many times and saw him in nba (his fadeaway J i saw on tape last nite on espn was unique but deadly) ... I was more into baseball and fball as lil kid, not until jr. high did i become a hoops fan .. then I recall watching one of my first cbb games with Pistol getting about 60 vs Dan Issel's 40 something on TV ... a short time later I watched Charlie Scott beat Davidson (Lefty coaching) and Mike Malloy in the ncaas in a tite one (maybe even OT) and I was hooked on march madness from there ... My fave player ever was Bill Walton--no one, i mean no one ever played CBB better in a sense of a team player; Larry and Magic are prob the runnerups ... But Bill was just my idol growing up as a player and later (even now) as I look back as a coach and appreicate his nuances and passion for the game...

have a great week

Caper,I remember Art as a Knick not at Duke.Like pt gd baseball was No1 back then.On that Knick team was Jumping Johnny Green. In '64 at the Worlds Fair I have a picture of Johnny and myself.Heyman I knew but can't remember him playing.During my college yrs at North Texas we always went to Moody Col at Smu and watched the Dallas Chaperals.Saw Dr J,Iceman,.I know Heyman played in the ABA for awhile.

Pt gd..my father would take me to the Garden for the Holiday Festival and NIT's.
I remember Mike Malloy.Davidson had Lefty D.They played Manhattan and won by 7 or 8 pts.I remember Jerry Kroll on that Davidson team.I think Holland was on it to.[not sure] I have the program somewhere in my attic NYU played in the doubleheader.Forgot who they played but I remember a great gd Dolph Perrota. And NYU had a 7'0 named Jim Signorelli. He was taking hook shots from the corner and they were going in.Jerry Lucas used to take them to from the corner too.
I would go to all the Manhattan-Fordham games being that my father was a Jasper.Larry Lembo was my favorite. Now I see him officiating on TV all the time.
Fav player...I saw..Calvin Murphy at Niagara,Ernie D at Providence,

good stuff, guys...also remember watching ray flynn, vinnie ernst and, later, jimmie walker @ prov, (could never figure why he didn't cut it in the pros)...also happy hairston and, of course bill bradley, many many more but the annual legendary celts/lakers playoffs in the 60's @ the (boston) garden was heaven for a kid who took his basketball to bed @ night...
box, funny you mention murphy, played against him & john austin in a summer league game & it was unbelievable to see him dunk, i think he was about 5'9"...
gregg, you're right, pistol pete was in a niche by himself, had a direct line to the hoop...
well, enough of yesterday's news, so tonite: gotta believe it's fairly safe to keep fading y'town st, esp otr...gl, caper

what does that have to do with his question? last night at the duke game he said he was going to unc but had problems with mcquire[ he probably wanted him to throw some games so he went to duke]. last i heard lawrence taylor sold some unc stuff for something that was white.

box, thats so funny, i lived in highland park as a kid for 5 years and my bros and I would ride our bikes to Moody Coliseum at halftime and theyd let U in free for the Chap games ... Dr J, Charlie Scott, Ice Man all played for the Squires, I even have a Va. Squire pennant to this day! ... One time the houston cougars played a home game and (this is totally from memory) only 63 fans showed up--love to see if someone could look that one up, hehe

Funny thing about the Pistol, amazing stat, averaged 44 a game his soph, jr and sr. year--exactly 44! each year -- thats kinda boggling, but i guess for a kid whose dad used to drive the car at 15-20 mph with the back door open and made his kid dribble on the road nothing was impossible ... when I was in 10th grade we had moved back to seattle and i saw the Pistol go wild vs the Soups, he hit 5 straight Js, each one i swear 2' deeper each time until he missed on the 6th!

sorry to ramble :)

Actually that is true, his dad would not let him come to UNC because he didn't trust mcquire, which in the end turns out to be a good call since he was shown to have given money to his players at the two previous positions before UNC (can't remember offhand where they were)
