In a playoff a Fraud Like Ok would be disposed of Early! Yet the BCS lets this garbage sit on the curb all year to get a shot at the title and Flounder...

I'll admit I thought Ok had a chance in this match-up but when all is said and Done to many other Quality teams were left out to be contenders:

The absence of a playoff robs us fans of the pinnacle of Sports Entertainment: THE Playoff Series culminating in a World or National CHAMPION!

Just My OP!

Grats USC........

Did anyone catch Tubberville at half time? When asked about the playoff, he said that he doesn't think they need a playoff, but the winner of the Sugar Bowl should have played the winner of the Orange Bowl (he specifically said that even if VT won they should have played the Orange winner). Just rubbed me the wrong way, felt the system should be changed slightly to help him but didn't think Utah deserved a shot at anyone, just rubbed me the wrong way because he came off pretty smug about it.

I just wanted to see what his reaction would be knowing--given the score at halftime and if very little else changed in the game--that his Auburn Tigers had no chance of being co-National Champs.

I think Utah is the team that got screwed the most in this mess. They had a good shot at beating any one of the 3 major undefeated teams ... and they sure as hell would have put up a better fight than Oklahomo!

I understand why people want a playoff, but let's be realistic. If these 4 games were 1st round playoff matchups rather than bowl games, 1) At least 3 of the 4 would have had trouble selling out because those teams' fans would have known there was another trip coming the next week (if you don't believe me, check attendance numbers for first round NCAA Men's D-I basketball games), and 2) The other 20+ bowls would have never happened, robbing the fans of teams like Iowa, LSU, Georgia, Cal, Louisville, West Virginia, etc. who don't contend for the National Championship of having a fun place to travel for a few days in support of their team.

Last comment I have to make is to Lightning, who simply can't be serious about Utah having a "good shot" of beating USC. Those garbage spread offenses routinely get exposed against tough competition. They did well to be arguably one of the 10 best teams and let's leave it at that.

Nick, I hear "other bowls" arguement often, and I just don't get it. Why can't they still have the other bowls for everyone other than the four or eight that make the playoffs? Sure, they'd be meaningless, but they already are meaningless. Just one more game for revenue and an excuse for the fans to take a vacation.

bj,

College bowls do mean something nowadays. They count on your record and you represent your conference to the rest of the country. If you really look at it, for some teams this is one of the only games, if not the only game, that schools play outside of their region. For those reasons, attendance remains strong (especially for bowls drawing teams from the SEC, Big XII and Big [11] 10) and sponsors continue to put up the money to allow them to happen.

The college bowl system exists only because there is no playoff. No other sport has a similar postseason system because every other sport has a playoff. With a playoff, a portion of bowls may last for a few years, but ultimately all bowls will become extinct and the playoff will be expanded to 16 teams. Sponsors and fans just won't care enough to put up with drooping attendance and an overall lack of interest.

I think everyone would agree that no sport in America "travels" like college football. Even the powerful NFL doesn't see fans of its teams travel in numbers upwards of 5,000 to road games (with the notable exceptions of Raiders fans at Chargers games and Cowboys fans at Cardinals games). The bowl system takes advantage of this fact. A playoff system would be nice for casual fans and non-alumni, but for the traveling fans and the boosters that give generously to players and the athletic department, it would be a step back.
