National Intelligence Council report could be Bush's worst fearTim Russert is NBC News? Washington bureau chief and host of Meet the Press.

He regularly offers MSNBC.com?s readers his insight and analysis into questions about politics past, present and future.

MSNBC: Tim, President Bush has called the war in Iraq an integral part in the war on terrorism. But now we see this report from the National Intelligence council that says Iraq has become the new training ground for terrorists.

Russert: It realizes his every worst fear.

Afghanistan had been the haven for al-Qaida, with the Taliban protecting them -? we had to go in there and take down the Taliban and try to root out al-Qaida.

If Iraq becomes the new haven, geographically, it is a disaster. It is so much closer to Israel and to other countries in the Middle East.

It is not what George Bush wants to leave behind. His vision was to have a democracy in Iraq, which would, in effect, lead the way for other democracies to follow in that area.

So, now the challenge is two-fold. How do we have an exit strategy, train enough Iraqis in military and security forces to turn over control of that nation so our troops can leave? And, secondly, how do we ensure that those Iraqis can hold down the insurgency and not let Iraq slip into the control of the terrorists.

MSNBC: What about former Secretary of State James Baker?s plan for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops.

Russert: I think that?s the dream of the policy makers at the Pentagon.

The difficulty is the Iraqis have to step up. If they do not take control of their country by having people join the military and join the police force and, frankly, be willing to hunt down other Iraqis, we are in a situation where we either stay and have a long war of terrible attrition, or we get out and the insurgents and the terrorists take over.

It?s Catch-22, in the worst sense of the word. I think we?ll have a much better idea of how the Iraqi people feel about their future when we see the result of the elections on Jan. 30.

MSNBC: So, we may find out the Iraqis don?t want democracy as much as the Bush administration has been encouraging democracy and maybe it can?t work?

Russert: Precisely. Do the Shiites really feel that the last 35 years under Saddam Hussein was such a burden that they now want to rise up and take control of their own destiny? And, will the Sunnis allow that?

That?s why you saw the Sunnis going after the cleric Sistani?s top aides. It?s a Shiite versus Sunni conflict in that area.

And today, several Kurds in the north were killed.

Brent Skowcroft, former national security advisor to former President George Herbert Walker Bush, believes they may be on the verge of a civil war.

MSNBC: What will you be talking about Sunday on Meet the Press?

Russert: We?re going to tackle this very issue, along with the other challenges confronting George W. Bush as he starts his second term this Thursday. We?ll talk with the man who?s worked with him for 12 years, the new counselor to the president, Dan Bartlett.

Very interesting that neither Drudge or Fox had any mention of the report by the NIC it on their sites yesterday. At least until the Bush camp came out with the defense that it is just conjecture.

In any country that has been ruled by an iron fist for decades or centuries, the long time historical enemies and their agendas resurface after the tyranny that kept them in check is removed.

The Wopr computer has accounted for all these things.

It has occurred almost everywhere the domination of communism has disappeared. Except for California.

Before 1945 Japan had never had an election in the entire history of the country. So many people at the time said it couldn't be done, basically, there were plenty of Russert types who said it would be a complete disaster. All of them so completely wrong.

The thing to remember about Russert is that he is very left wing and anti Bush. The other thing to always remember about these talking heads is that there is never any penalty for them being wrong. They just go on making predictions and comments that turn out to be completely and utterly wrong.

Russert and his type like Dan Rather are the "old America". Left wing Liberals who just can't accept that the tide of history is proving them completely wrong in every way.

I believe Iraq will turn out great, just like Japan. My opinion is every bit as likely to be as correct as Russert's.

IN ALOT OF PEOPLES OPINIONS AROUND THE WORLD THE DUMBIES THAT VOTED FOR BUSH THE FIRST TIME WERE QUITE DUMB. THE ONES THAT VOTED FOR HIM THE 2ND TIME ARE JUST PLAIN SUICIDAL.

GOOD LUCK IS ALL I CAN SAY. MAN I HOPE YOU GUYS DONT CONTINUE DOWN THIS TERRIBLE ROAD. JUST LOOK AT THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY NUMBERS. NOBODY WANTS TO GO TO THE US. WHY IS THAT??

Once again notice how DTB cannot defend Bush's War so he attacks Kerry. It's getting old Dogs. Maybe next time you could defend him like Anne Coulter when she is stumpped and claim it never happened or she doesn't know about it! LOL! You neocons are an amazing bunch. And Englishman it is not Russets report it comes out of the CIA. He just choses to comment on it. So because he doesn't ignor it like Dogs and Fox he is left wing?

Russert is closer to center them many in the media. And we all know the the right media machine is always careful to pick it's stories. And now we have Bush on Barb's show saying, Ya I said some dump things. It's like growing a brain late. Man Bush's numbers are in the tank. You wonder how the hell he won. Many people are waking up two months late. Even DTB buddy Clinton had 60% going into his 2nd term. That after 4 years of the right hitting him with a bunch of B S. But then he did screw it up his second term. Strange how Americans can be forgiving. Yes even after B J in the office. Clinton's rating today are still higher then Bush. Iraq is a mess. And our guys don't even know who there fighting most days. They can pass on the street and not even notice each other. Insurgents are all over the place. And time will tell what outcome will be. But your starting to hear leaks in the adminastrations reasons for staying.

Is it possible that normal people can understand lying about a bj but have a tougher time with a President lying about the reason for going to war and the dreadful results of that war?

Stevie:

You are correct about Wayne. That has been his mo since day one. Whether I argue a point about lawyers, corporate America, Bush, foreign affairs, it doesnt matter. He will always shift the argument to his favorite whipping boy, Bill Clinton. No matter the stretch.

Or another of my favorite Wayneo tactics is, he will say show me where I have ever said something. Frankly, no one has the time to go into history and find some of Waynes former posts where for instance he supported the invasion of Iraq because of the wmd.

Don't worry, everything that is wrong with the country can be traced back to Bill Clinton and everything that is right with the country is due to the moral, just and God fearing leadership of Ronald Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2. Oh yeah and Fox News (sic) is the only network reporting the same.

Find a board in your own country to carry on all your "positive" talk.
