not big on drawing crazy attention to the thread, so didnt put the label on the outside subject line.
but ill go ahead and throw the label on it now. if anyone finds if worthy of playing, im confident it will cash. if not, its all good. been waiting for this one for a few weeks. suffice to say, this is a big one for me.

mac game of year -- toledo rockets (+3.5) and (+140)

other plays:

butler (-5)
tennessee (+15)
central michigan (+12.5)

will offer more on the above when i get a chance shortly. gonna tail sun tzu on villanove too. middle of the season non-conf road chalks are normally terrible bets and im not quite sold on kansas.

toledo rockets

the premier rivalry in the mac.

in the last two games, bowling green has started to get exposed for what they are: a good mac team, but one that has major trouble matching up with teams who have lots of athleticism. western michigan and ball state both handled bg because the falcons couldnt match up. toledo has every bit as much athleticism as both bsu and western.

its no coincidence that bowling green is last in the conference in free throws attempted. after lewis quit the team in the offseason, it left bowling green with nobody that can take the ball to the basket and draw fouls, and really nobody that can consistently create their own shot or something for teammates when things break down. reimold is a deadly shooter, but he is purely a catch and shoot guy. almanson is a nice inside player, but he is kinda soft and more finesse and doesnt get to the line nearly as much as he should.

bowling green is able to stay above .500 because they do the little things well. theyre well-coached, get good leadership from reimold, and shoot the ball well from 3pt range and the line.

but when it comes to matching up with the blue-chip talent in the mac, bowling green cant do it this year. all their athletes are on the football field, lol.

i was fortunate enough to see both of last years meetings in person. they split the season series, but toledo really shoulda swept bg. rockets won at home and then had a chance to win at bg but couldnt hold a 7pt halftime lead and then lost in OT.

toledo might not be the best team in the mac (as they were projected preseason) but theyre definitely top 3 or 4, and theyve probably got more talent than anyone this season. its really just a matter of knocking down shots. for awhile, toledo was living too much on the perimeter but i think joplin realized that because it seems toledo has made a concerted effort to get to the line more and be more aggressive. theyve shot fewer 3s than usual the last couple games and have taken 60 FTs in the last two games while shooting 52% from the field.

but i could really throw out all the stats and numbers and just go by what i know about both teams as well as what i saw in person last year when these two matched up (because the rosters are the same). toledo is just a superior basketball team and bowling green didnt have answers for triplett and ingram going to the basket against 'em. and valencia really didnt even play a whole lot last year but now he is giving the rockets a legit inside threat with pinson.

toledo wins this basketball game. i am very confident of it.

Pinson

Pinson

I did some digging and found this in the Blade.

" Joplin will make a game-time decision on whether to play 6-10 center Allen Pinson, who has missed the last two games with a concussion."

Any concern that an already soft inside Rocket Team will get beat up in the paint tonight ?

gman....totally agree with you GAME analysis. However, not sure how your best game of the MAC season can be against Bowling Green at HOME. Bowling Green has always had one of the strongest home court advantages in the MAC for probably 10 years now....maybe longer. Good luck, but I cant tail you with a team that has been a wild card all year going into a hornets nest. Good luck with your play man, I gotta lay off!

tease:

i know where youre coming from, but any points that toledo is getting tonight are a bonus. the venue is all thats keeping this from being a pick game. a lot of this play is based on what i saw in the two games last year. ive seen a lot of teams get fazed on the road in bg, but toledo was really composed didnt make a whole lot of mistakes. unless bg gets ridiculously hot from the perimeter, i dont see toledo losing.

spang:

actually did not see that. thanks for the heads up. fortunately, bg is a perimeter team and with 6'11 netter graduating last year, im not sure bg would be able to take advantage of that absence if pinson doesnt go. i know youre not big on toledo this year, but i think they will get it done here. you goin to the zips game tonight? i had to play cmu small just because akron has experienced some success by really playing well vs. some of the upper tier mac teams. now theyre laying a ton of pts to a doormat. do they come out with the same intensity? i think they let cmu hang around a little bit. chips are bad, but you think we'll see akron's best effort tonight?

Yeah, I'm going but will probably make it late. Got a retirement dinner that we can't back out of. I think that the Zips will turn in a good effort tonight as the JAR is nearly sold out, which do'nt happen often. I can see your reasons for taking CMU tonight as the young Zips have had a tough time closing out some easy wins. Jay Smith will surely try to extend any game he is involved with, and Akron is not a great FT shooting team.

Got to go to work for a bout 4-5 hours so good luck today, I'll check back in at about 10 PM or so.

ctown:

youngstown is far and away the worst team in the horizon, but theres no way in hell i lay any points with cleveland state on the road. they dominated ysu in the 2h a few weeks ago but struggled with them in the 1h. vikes will be in some solid spots to cover in the coming weeks at home, but cant trust em as a road chalk. they dont know how to win on the road yet. maybe they break through today, but my money is nowhere near this one. gl. would like to see csu get it done, but not holding my breath

Congrats on your game of the year G !

our retirement dinner was cancelled due to the weather and actually we made it for the tip at the jar. The Zips layed the hammer to the Chipps early and often. Now its time to see if we are contenders or pretenders. Ball St comes in tuesday and as evidenced today they can be very tough. I like their coach and am looking forward to seeing their point guard play. I understand that he's pretty tough.
After that we have two with both Miami and Kent, so the Zips actually are in complete control of their destiny. I walk away more and more impressed with them every game. It seems that sombody new steps up almost every game and their depth is really paying off. Lets face it, the MAC is wide open this year so why not. :scared
