Scott,

Would we expect you to be unbiased and say someone other that USC had the best recruiting class? Did we really expect anything else out of you even though no one else ranks USC as the best class but because you say so they are. Also, your full of shit to base any recruiting class on what a few people rate them with stars, your too smart to fall for that crap! We all know that it takes a minimum of two to three years to even begin to grade a incoming class, heck you can look at recent signing classes of 01 and 02 and see that over half of the 4 and 5 star guys never have had much success at the college level. A good example is the QB class of 01, of the top ten QB's six of them failed for multipla reasons ranging from gambling to grades. A good example of how far off these experts are is look at the Nebraska teams in the mid 90's rarely were their recruiting classes ranked in the top ten and sometimes not in the top 15 yet they were overpowering.

WRONG!

Rivals has USC #1 and I posted it. I also said Scout and Lemming don't have USC #1. Its all in the post. Maybe you never heard of Rivals but they are the top 3 recruiting services. Prob. #1. Your post is bogus and wrongly attacked me.

Also, your full of shit to base any recruiting class on what a few people rate them with stars, your too smart to fall for that crap!

Then how would you base recruiting rankings? Its all subjective and fun to talk about. Another example of you tearing down one's opinion yet provide no solution.

you can look at recent signing classes of 01 and 02 and see that over half of the 4 and 5 star guys never have had much success at the college level.

I guarantee you more than 1/2 of the 5-star recruits had success in college. Remember, there are only 30+ 5-star recruits in the country every recruiting year. I also guarantee more 4-star and 5-star recruits have success than 2 and 3star recruits.

Put it this way. There is a 60% chance a 5-star recruit is a superstar. There is a 25% chance a 4-star recruit superstar. 10% a 3-star recruit superstar. #'s are just fun and made up but you get the point. No guarantees a 5-star is superstar but the prob. is there and in their favor!

A good example is the QB class of 01, of the top ten QB's six of them failed for multipla reasons ranging from gambling to grades.

Coaches are to blame as well. Coaches job to get his players to reach their potential. A great example was Carson Palmer was a 5-star recruit and he did very little under Hacket. He sure as hell looked like a 5-star recruit with Chow/Carroll.

A good example of how far off these experts are is look at the Nebraska teams in the mid 90's rarely were their recruiting classes ranked in the top ten and sometimes not in the top 15 yet they were overpowering.

Nebraska's success was because they were the first to use off-season training. They were the pioneers of using all year training and having top notch S&C coaches. Nebraska teams always overpowered you. When other colleges caught on, the success of Nebraska started to decline. Not to mention Nebraska always played pisss poor schedule. Speed kills when combined with S&C training and Nebraska lacked speed. I think Osborne got out at the right time at Nebraska and maybe he forcasted it. Who knows.

Scott,

You take things too personal,I did not attack you but your voice is not the only one in all matters! Rivals may be a top three in some peoples book but in others it is not in the top five, but just because you believe it is the best it does not become the best. The flame out for four and five star athletes is huge and most of these kids cannot adjust to their first failures and flame. I would be tempted to put money on it but I bet that if you studied the NFL the vast majority of the players this year would of been ranked either three stars or under when coming out of high school. Saying that 60% of 5 star players have success is way too high and I am positive that if you researched that subject it would be much more closer to 40% if that. I have already told you how I would base rankings and that is that it is next too impossible to rank high school kids until two to three years down the road as I said before your dealing with 18 year old kids that can and will do anything. Carson Palmer did benefit from good coaching but how do you explain the flame outs of kids at such notable schools as Ohio State, FSU etc... surely they had good coaching under Tressel and Bowden but it's all a complete crapshoot. For Nebraska not having good players and just winning because of strength training they sure produced alot of NFL players over the years that had success and a vast majority of them were not highly recruited out of high school but just like any other school they have had their flame outs when the kids busted in the NFL. If you took offense I am sorry and I agree with you that recruiting is fun to talk about and I enjoy the study of it but I disagree with ranking any team #1 until three years down the road.

1. Tennessee Easily the No. 1 class after landing seven of the top 100 players. Addressed needs with elite players LB Rico McCoy, CB Demetrice Morley and RB LaMarcus Coker.
2. Michigan QB Jason Forcier and lineman Marques Slocum are both top players, making this class special again.
3. Southern California Landing two of the top five preps and jucos is a nice haul for the Trojans. Signing the top player from Tennessee and Hawaii broadens recruiting base. Mark Sanchez is the QB of the future.
4. Florida State Never count out Bobby Bowden closing the deal late. Seminoles signed stars RB Antone Smith, WR Fred Rouse and CB Jamie Robinson, topping off another solid effort.
5. Oklahoma Late commitments from Reggie Smith and DT DeMarcus Granger push this class into the top five.
6. Nebraska An infusion of junior college talent led by QB Zac Taylor and CB Zack Bowman are a quick fix, but for the long run it's RB Marlon Lucky.
7. Georgia DBs C.J. Byrd and Bryan Evans and LB Darius Dewberry anchored a defensive-minded class.
8. Florida First-year coach Urban Meyer did a wonderful job keeping DB Avery Atkins and K Jonathan Phillips in-state. Then he went to Georgia for RB Tony Wright and California for QB Josh Portis.
9. Ohio State RB Maurice Wells brings stability to the backfield, but mostly the Buckeyes addressed needs along the lines and at wide receiver.
10. Iowa Four top players from Illinois are bolting for the Hawkeyes, led by the nation's top group of linemen and TE Tony Moeaki.

Rank School Comment
1. Nebraska Cornhuskers helped themselves at every position, signing 30 players. Thirteen high school and seven juco All-Americans highlight a deep class. RB Marlon Lucky can start as a true freshman.
2. Tennessee Demetrice Morley, the nation's top CB, really drives this class. Needs were addressed at every position.
3. Southern California The class is led by WR Patrick Turner, QB Mark Sanchez and LB Rey Maualuga, all considered among the best at their positions.
4. Michigan The running game adds depth with RBs Mister Simpson and Kevin Grady, while the offensive line is led by David Moosman. DT James McKinney is a great catch from Kentucky.
5. Oklahoma LB Ryan Reynolds and WR Malcolm Kelly are two of the nation's best at their positions. Reggie Smith, considered the top in-state talent, is also aboard.
6. Florida State Another late charge was evident, especially at the skill positions. LB Eugene Hayes and DL Neefy Moffett will have an impact on defense.
7. Iowa Landed its top class in 30 years. Plenty of help along the line with OT Dan Doering.
8. Texas A&M The Aggies have a great mix from the high school and juco ranks. RB Jorvorskie Lane (6-1, 230) is a Jerome Bettis clone.
9. Georgia With a weak year in-state, the Dawgs ventured into states such as South Carolina, Florida and New Jersey. DT Kade Weston of New Jersey is their best prospect.
10. Virginia Tech The Hokies signed top in-state talent DB Victor Harris and RB Elan Lewis, adding depth at both positions.

Ask any coach in div. 1a if they would rather have a 5-star WR recruit or a 3-star WR recruit? Your points are valid that recruiting rankings don't necessarily mean championships. Everyone knows recruiting is "not" an exact science. However, a higher % of 5-star players become superstars vs % of 4-star players, and % of 3-star players. That is a fact. Therefore, MOST coaches would rather have a 5-star recruit. A great example where the recruiting rankings were wrong is Dwane Jarret of USC. Recruiting sites had him 4-star when USC coaching staff felt like he was a 5-star. But no recruiting service and no coaching staff can make the correct projections. So I guess it all boils down to you specifically no caring or give meaning to recruiting rankings. The recruiting rankings are projections and everyone knows there are people making 6-7 figure salaries on wall street who make incorrect projections all the time.

That all said, you can see a strong correlation between the top 10 recruiting rankings and the top 10 teams in the final polls.

USC, Miami, FSU, OU, OSU, Texas all finish in the top 10 in recruiting rankings and all have finished in the top 10 on a consistent basis in the last 3 years. Strong correlation.

5-star players tend to be more immediate impact players vs 3-star players need time to develiop.

So I must ask you a question. Show me a team who recruits top 10 nationally and doesn't finish in the top 15 in the polls? Curious if there is a team.

Good data and as a whole you sort of proved "my" statement to be incorrect.

So I must ask you a question. Show me a team who recruits top 10 nationally and doesn't finish in the top 15 in the polls? Curious if there is a team.

However, one recruiting class in top 10 doesn't correlate to top 10 ranking. You must recruit top 10 nationally consecutive years and you obviously don't see the dividends until 3-4 years down the road when the recruits mature.

2002 classes in top 10 finish in top 10 in 2005? That year Auburn had top 10 class and last year Auburn went undefeated. Texas had #1 class and last year they only lost 1 game.

OU had 3 consecutive top 10 classes 2002-2004 and they went undefeated last year in regular season. Georgia has now 3 consecutive top 10 classes so look for them to make statement in 2006!

I think you will find more than 50% of the teams who finish top 10 recruiting nationally finish top 15 in the rankings. I sort of worded it wrong and said find me a team and you found TEAMS! I believe there is no excuse "not" to finish top 15 nationally if you had consecutive top 10 recruiting classes 2-3 years prior. That give you a 5 slot ranking margin of error.

What I mean to say is back to back top 10 recruiting classes will produce top 15 rankings most of the time. Obviously there will be teams who fail.

Good job with the data!

You better hope Weis is an excellent coach because you will have a major disadvantage in talent when ND plays USC. I honestly think at least 10 of USC's 2nd string players on O/D would start for ND. Huge talent disparity.

Playing Michigan, TN, and USC in same season is TOUGH!

Always respect ND for their tough schedules but year in year out they gotta be the toughest in the country.

Good luck to Weis and ND. You better hope he has a better recruiting class next year, say top 10 in country if ND gonna get back on top!

Scott,

I am sure that you are correct that most coaches would rather have all 5* players, but please feel free to post any information that you have to back up your theory that 5* and 4* players do better than players that are not ranked as high. I know for a fact that this is not true and as I have told you before examine any NFL team and come back and tell me how many 5* and 4* they have compared to the others *'s and unranked. I think that the percentages will amaze you after you really sit down and look at it but no one is disputing that you are correct that 5* players are suppose to be impact players but you have to realize that is just based on a snapshot in time and is very fluid as there are many variables.

Scott,

Just to reply to your thumbs down on the Auburn recruiting.

Auburn signed everyone they recruited fheavily or wanted except for Antone Smith, who signed with Florida State, but we all knew he would probably go to Miami or another Florida school.

Tommy said this was exactly what he wanted, and didn't sign many kids because next years recruits will be some of the most talented the south has seen in years. He said this before, not after signing day, so you don't say he wass covering his bottom.

I know we did get:

2 top 10 TE's
1 top 3 LB
Some good lineman
Some good secondary

I can tell you that there was no dissappointment from anyone at Auburn about the class, and we NEVER are ranked highly in recruiting, but it seemed to work out well for us this year.

And to give USC credit, they did sign some studs.

Scott,

Where was this years Co-National title winner Auburns seniors ranked when they came in as freshman? Without checking I would have to believe that they were not top five if even top ten!

I checked on Cadillac, and he was a 5 star, and Ronnie was a 4 star. I will check on Jason Campbell, but I am sure he was at most a 4 star.

Like I said, we are never ranked that highly in recruiting, but we still seem to do well.
