I have problems........The wife is in depression mode where she doesnt like her job, hates the weather here in Columbus, Ohio, and is ready to move out to Vegas.

I think she is more serious than I even wish to believe.

To some of you guys that live out that way, is this a bad idea for a young 26 year old married couple? I am in pretty good at my job......I quit school for awhile, so I still have about 1.5 years left to get my degree when I decide to pursue it again. I have gotten really lucky making about 60K a year with my job, and am scared that I wouldnt be so lucky if I up and start again. I have thought that if I move to Vegas I would go to dealer school and see what kind of money I could make. My wife is a teacher so I am sure she could find good work.

She claims that the cost of property etc. is pretty reasonable and we could definatly afford it.

Guys.....I am really caught in a situation here......my wife really stops at nothing until she gets what she wants, and I really think she wants this.

What the hell am I supposed to do??? Any advice???

property costs out there are hardly affordable.

It is one of the boomingest places as far as price for a home goes right now. Was reading a real estate article on how the local market is priced out of reach of locals and the people who own and buy the houses there are out of towners who rent it to locals at outlandish prices.

OH to NV is a big jump... does she know people or have family there?

Or, worst case scenario, she just wants to go where she can live out these outlandish fantasies of high rolling and cabaret shows every night.

But hey, they brought back lap dances down there...

As Marine suggested, I think you better look into property values a little closer. I just heard some story the other day about how a $200K home became a $400K home in like two years or less out there. There are like 3000 people/month moving out to LV. I doubt you are going to be finding many bargains in that kind of a market.

On the second issue, good luck.

Work is what brought me to Vegas 5 years ago. I've had a love-hate relationship with the city ever since. Thank God I finally started doing my sports bets online. The casino temptations were very bad sometimes.

Lots and lots of opportunities. Some jobs don't pay as well here as other places though (like teaching). I'd suggest doing some pay and benefits research first.

Sometimes this is the greatest place on earth! Everybody comes here and it can be a blast. You never have to worry about things closing - and that's something I really appreciate.

To raise kids - not necessarily the best place, but the newer planned communities have made it a lot better - and will continue to improve.

I HATE HATE HATE HATE the summers. So hot. I don't care about the "dry heat" thing. Sometimes that can feel even worse - worse for your skin, that's for sure.

Property values took a huge spike last year, and have leveled. I bought my house 2.5 years ago, and it's up about 75% in that time. I don't think it'll jump like that again for a while. I'm sure it's cheaper in other places.

Don't want to rain on your party but really don't think you guys would be happy out here.

people think it is so great out here and i must say it is if your here for a few days Hell I was loving it my first year was still coaching and drining also. it was lot of fun still not as fun fl but fun.

Then it hits you around 3 years or so it is the same shit everyday , unless you live in henderson or summerlin for the most part you will be around lot of crime . And this is not like back east remember i am from pittsburgh then mover to morgentown/fairmont wvu when family moved which is a whole 45 mins to pittsburgh 4 hours to your city, I can be in many different cities and states back in the pittsburgh area, just like where your at same as most place in the east or south out west it is a whole different ball game in nv or vegas, there are no toher places to go you are stuck here, you can't say hey lets drive a couple hours and be to cinn or clev pitt, does not happen here , there is no where to drive to but dry ass land, you have palm springs 4 hours away la,sd, ana 5 hours phon az 5 hours reno 8.5 hours salt lake 9 hoursyour in the middle of know where, and the traffic and crime are unlike anywhere i have been tes i livied in atlanta, miami, lauderdale, jacksonville, mobile, houston been to la and many other cities traffic is nuts here moves better in atl then here, so many people live here move here every month and won't slow down for a few more years like 10, but they did not plan for the traffic so always building or adding on to all the 4-6 lane roads that go right through where you live unless your in the places i said, and still all the main roads are 4-6 lanes the same as interstates that run through and around the city, to me yes it has pop of a city but it is really a large town with pop of a city no room to move, we have a big lot where our house is oversize back yard, well trust me over sized it not what you think when you think back east. our house is 8 years old cost a little over 211,000 could and will sale it in next 1.5 years or sooner for at least 300,000 with ease and won't be on market for more then a few weeks, cost have gone up fast and will keep going up, and might not have state tax but they sure tax the hell out of you on everything else and prices are higher because harder to have food and stuff shipped in because it is the middle of no-where, summer the heat don't buy that dry heat shit give me fl and 98-100 with humidity any day then when you go from june till oct in the upper 100 range and june ,july aug most days are 110 and up and that is very damn hot, way more then 98-100 like fl, trust me those extra 10 = make a major difference at night after midnight it never drops below 100 for the most part in the summer and when you get to the 114-116 mark then it just flat out sucks.

She would get a job fast 2nd biggest school district in us, and pay is above avg they are always like almost 1000 or so short all the time well there is a reason and nt the pay. You will not come out here and make 60 grand as a dealer it takes a good 3-5 years to get to those spots not as easy as they make it sound, I just think and know manyfrom back east who hate it and went back some like it, me i hate it don't like to fell like i am stuck in middle of know where and that is just what it is. it might be hard for people to understand this who come here to visit, because of all the lights and big money being played and changing hands, well that shit wares off, you will see if you move here, most people that due good here are people from the west coast already, people from the east coast seem to get board with being out here. it is not all about the flashy lights and how the tv makes it look or what you see when you are here and never leave the strip, very nice where i live in henderson and very nice in summerlin but as for the strip forget it, i stay far away from it as I can major pain in the ass. Hey you might like it but it is not what you see on vacation or on tv, like i said I am sure people who come here for there 3-5 day get aways will say I am nuts, well they don't live here they visit, and you will have every day over 100,000 extra people 356 days a year doing just that a visit added on top to all the people who live here.

I like a change of weather , like in nc or fl ga even wv,pa. I like to see storms and lighting it is relaxing snow i can handle but better suited for the south, if you like to see fall colors forget it or any storms like i said forget that for the most part and you will miss those things, sunshine almost everyday can wear on you just like a gray winter after awhile, when it gets to those 110+ for 3 months it is not much different then a grey winter because you are stuck inside for the most part, wait till you get one of those 300 + buck electric bills in the summer for 3-4 straight months then things start to look a little different.

it is good for some but I like to travle and not have to fly everywhere, i want to be able to dive a few hours and be different places here you have the 5 hour drives to the 4 places i said and they get old also going to same place to get away for 3-4 days for a quick break. Just letting you know my point of living out here. And after 18 = years Jerri is sick of it and is not the money, it has really worn on her the last 3-4 years it like is unral how many people move here then get stuck with no where to go also chasing the big dream like they try and make it look like on tv. When we bought are house in green valley it was and still very nice but we had 3 hgih schools in henderson now there is 7-9 in just 8 years , and if you want or have children would never raise a family out here, this city has and does eat many people alive more then those who make it, non stop 24 hours like i said was great for awhile but then the draw backs start to kick in. just think it out very very good.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback!!!

Yea......my wife is a dreamer. I love her for that, but she is very high maintenance. What I kind of got out of her last night, is that she envies all of the entertainment opportunities out in Vegas. She is a choir teacher now, but has aspirations of being a performer (whether it be in a Vegas show, or in theatre.....anything that she can do to showcase her singing, because she is quite good.) She wants to pursue it while she is young, and why can you blame her? I personally regret the fact that I never pursued baseball. I got hurt in high school and couldnt keep a roster spot one year, and really let it go. I have regret it ever since.....although baseball is one of the hardest sports to make it big time in, I really think I could have at least played high level college ball and possibly something better. So I fully understand her wanting to pursue something.

Oh well......maybe this will go away when summer comes......but then again, we are coming out to Vegas for March Madness, so she will probably be wanting it more than ever!

Sometimes I think I am sick for not just running out there, because I love it out there too, but who knows!

Thanks again guys

Everytime this subject comes up you mention Florida. I just don't agree that Florida is much differant than Vegas in alot of ways. Sunshine all the time, hot all the time, ocean all around, hurricanes, storms all right.

The Florida Keys is my favorite area in Florida. If I could live there I would. My wife likes the mountains though so I would need to divorce her first.

Nice post.

Check out the ATL. I love it here. Very reasonable cost of living and plenty of stuff to keep me and the wife busy.

I hope u have a strong relationship, bc the temptations in Vegas can ruin a marriage before u can say, "I was just out with the guys honey"..
............................................................

Yeh and singers get called to the casting couch.

Also there are hundreds of singers that go to Vegas and alot make it to work in shows etc.

Of course to really make it big the voice has to have a unique quality and sound.

Yeh alot of temptations in Vegas.

What a city though.

Fletcher nailed it but left out 1 item. It sucks. Freaks dujour. No such animal as dry heat. Casino workers have the most boring jobs on the planet. Watch them for awhile. After a weekend the casinos stink of stale smoke and people who don't have time for things like hygenics and such. Gridlock 24/7, Heat, flash flooding, etc.
Single, yes for awhile, married, forget it. One opinion = good luck
Someone mentioned Atlanta-Charlotte-Charleston WV
