Officials: Bin Laden Urges Zarqawi to Hit U.S.

Monday, February 28, 2005

WASHINGTON ? Recent communications between Usama bin Laden (search) and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (search) indicate that bin Laden has "encouraged Zarqawi and his group to focus on attacks inside the United States," multiple U.S. officials told FOX News on Monday.

The sources would not get into detail about how the communication was made or how it was intercepted by the United States. They also said that there is nothing specific in the message, such as maps or references to particular cities or buildings. Rather, the communication simply encourages a "focus" on attacks inside U.S. borders, sources said.

The Homeland Security Department issued a classified bulletin to officials over the weekend about the intelligence, which spokesman Brian Roehrkasse described as "credible but not specific." The intelligence was obtained over the past several weeks, officials said.

The U.S. has no immediate plans to raise its national alert level, Roehrkasse said. However, the intelligence "reiterates the desire by Al Qaeda and its associates to target the homeland," he said.

Zarqawi, the leader of Al Qaeda (search) in Iraq and believed to be the inspiration of the ongoing bombings, beheadings and attacks on Iraqi and American forces, pledged his alliance to bin Laden last year and changed the name of his group in Iraq to reflect his ties to Al Qaeda. Iraqi officials said they expect to take Zarqawi soon; they recently nabbed a key associate and driver of the Jordanian-born terror leader.

U.S. officials say Zarqawi has "his hands full" trying to stay out of U.S. or Iraqi custody in Iraq and they question whether Zarqawi's group would have the ability to pull off an attack inside America. Also, officials are wondering aloud what this means about Al Qaeda and whether if the group is reaching out to its central leader because they are under significant pressure.

Another administration official with access to the Homeland Security Department's bulletin said the intelligence indicates that Al Qaeda has continued to encourage al-Zarqawi, who was born in Jordan, to get involved in terrorist actions against Americans outside of Iraq, including in the United States.

"The intelligence continues to be analyzed by the intelligence community and all appropriate information will be passed on to homeland security partners," Roehrkasse said. "The department has no plans at this time to raise the threat level based on this nonspecific information."

FOX News' Bret Baier, Nick Simeone and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

lol at Bin Laden trying to get other people to fight his battles for him.....seems like after 9/11 the Bush administration has kept this pussy on the run and crippled his ability to attack us. Now he has to try and get other people to fight his battles for him?? What a pussy.

His position might be better than dead--evidently with decimation of his top echeolon and he being confined to caves he has to call on others to try what apparently he thinks he can no longer do. I know you feel safer when he was running about-training openly with assetts and top dogs in tact--right?
Your not by yourself so does ACLU--I see where they are sueing our military over treatment of terrorist--no doubt who side their on.

Nice spin job there cheif but just to clarify - myself and "my buddies" (not sure which madjackers in particular you are referring to :mj03: ) never once said Bin Laden was indeed dead, I said he very well could be. Many doctors, journalists and commentators also said it was a possibility as well. I'd be happy to quote them for you if you'd like. Even the London Daily mail ran an article saying that he died of a lung illness. Nobody heard from him in over 2 years and from what I know he was in and out of hospitals the past 10 years and has also been on kidney dialasys. I said he COULD BE dead.

Prob the best thing to do is use the quote tool and find where I said he was indeed dead. Feel free to look through my old posts I dare you. :)

No - there WAS no connection with Saddam and the Al Qaeda of 9/11. Of course there's all kinds of connections with Al Qaeda and terrorists in Iraq now. Nobody is claiming otherwise. Please don't twist things around like that.

That being said, I'm all for taking down terrorism at every level. F### the ACLU if they get in the way over trivial matters. I was thrilled at our initial efforts in Afghanistan - but we should have made that country more stable.

I don't like the attitude of the Right of taking Osama lightly. He's still out there - he's the actual person behind the actual 9-11, and the Right dismisses him as having no or little power. I don't understand that kind of lazy attitude. I was furious when Bush said in 2002 that Osama's whereabouts were not a concern of his.

I also don't like the assumption that we are taking down certain percentages of the terrorism leadership. As we continually learn, new leaders pop up when old ones are taken out. Afterall, there are a lot more terrorists in Iraq now than there were in 2002. Lets stop patting ourselves on the back so much and realize there are more terrorists than just the ones we can put on a deck of cards.

Will agree with you Smurph is does not help a lot to take down one and have 2 replace him. However I think thinning out the big boys is significant--also agree with you on issue of MANY more terrorist in Iraq now than previously.
I think they are quite aware that the start of democracy is not in their best interest and while they sluffed off in Afgan until it was too late they did not want to make same mistake. Now it is they who are in a catch 22. They have farfewer havens to hide where not hunted but more importantly--they are now appearing to not be fighting for Muslim cause but against Muslims for their own cause--which will make recruiting down the road far tougher in my view. They are pissing a lot of Muslims off.

It's a moot point who pissed higher up the flagpole. There will soon be a real war with people who fight back. With the ACLU prosecuting war crimes against it's own country, the US will have no choice but to align with the Zionists and go after Syria. Rumors have already started that Syria bombed Tel Aviv and the Japs have denied shipping access to North Korea.( Embargo is the operative word) We will wake up one morning at war. Some folks here can't wait.

Hey you said it not me :) You said "NOW" there is a connection between Al-Queda and Iraq.....eluding the notion that the Bush Administration is the one who brought these two terrorist organizations together. I opened the other thread to show you that this shit between Al-Queda and Saddam had been going on for 15 years.

(oh and nevermind about the apology thingy..."it's moot now" ..lol...I'm just glad you were able to learn something new today.) ;)
