I am changing a power steering pump on a 97 Dodge Stratus. I swear that when the engineers designed this damn thing the didnt think on how someone is going to replace parts.

Anyways..I removed the line, removed the hose, and took out the two bolts (one on each side) for adjusting the belt tension. The only thing holding it up is one bolt on top behind the pulley. I cannot get to it. I have tried just about everything. There isnt any room the get up in there.

I even bought a chilton manual thinking it would tell me how to get to it. It says there is a plug on the inside wheel well. Wrong...there isnt one any where near the bolt.

Anyone ever change this before??

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
"I have tried just about everything."

go to Sears tool dept and see if anything there might do it---like offset extension, ratcheting box wrenches, socket with universal joint, "wobbly" offset extensions, and so on...

Once (those old days of yore I did all my own work on my cars..) I was forced to use shallow 1/4 inch socket with universal joint bent extreme angle, to extension connected to a little breaker bar.

the only book that might help is the factory shop manual.

could have an experienced mechanic come take look at it---there is almost always a way....

but Scott-A's suggestion is probably the best...

Scotts idea was good but I need to get this thing out of my garage tonight. Otherwise the kid will think its his new parking spot.

If all else fails I could just take the saws-all to the wheel well and cut a huge access door. :) :)

Just to the right of the shock is where the access hole should be located according to the chilton manual.

I need to get the bolt out that is on the right side of the pulley. This pic was taken from underneath the car so you can see there is hardley any room. The bolt is located straight up.

That thing is coming out one way or another today.

It is a 6 cyl.

The only good thing about this whole thing is the wife was out in the garage with me yesterday being my gopher and was freezing so now she insists that I get a torpedo heater to hold me over till the spring when we can put a furnace in the garage.

Ok..After a lot of swearing and getting pissed I finally got it off. I finally backed it off far enough to get the air ratchet on it and off it came. Now it came time to remove the pulley. It was pressed on so hard that it snapped while trying to remove it. It was plastic so I should have expected it. Tommorow we will get a new pulley and everything should go back together pretty quick.
