Minnesota is an intriguing team, winning five in a row before losing to Illinois by eight in a game that was a two point deficit with just under four minutes to go, Gophers with the ball. Anyhow, Minnesota is 3-0 SU and ATS their last three as a neutral court favorite of three or less, and has the one superstar on the court in Vincent Grier that can go for 30 any given game. With the improved guard play of Lawson and Robinson, to the inside game of Hagen, a former walk-on, this Gopher team is primed for another big game. Iowa State was a nice story this year, but this Minnesota team is destined for at least one win in their first trip to the dance in over five years.
Central Florida was pegged as 15 seed, but will play more like a 11 or a 12 tonight. UConn has underachieved all year, and was pegged as a 2 but is more like a 4 or a 5. Anyway, the Knights from UCF are riding an eight game win streak, including a 63-54 win in the Atlantic Sun championship game to get the auto bid. They are also shooting the lights out from behind the arc, shooting almost 40 percent from the land of threes. As for UConn, they are only 3-8 ATS their last 11 as a neutral court favorite of 12 1/2 or more, and are 2-6 ATS in the first round of tournaments since 1997. UCF hangs tough and drops this one by six today to UConn, covering easy.
Kansas has underachieved all year long, with injuries to Simien and Langford, two of their best players. The Jayhawks lost to Okla St in the semis of the Big 12 tourney WITHOUT the services of Langford, and are 8-2 SU and 6-3 ATS their last 10 big dance games. Bucknell played the game of their lives in beating Holy Cross in the conf. tourney game last week, but they run into a Jayhawk buzzsaw in Oklahoma City tonight. This one is all Kansas by 20 or more.
Syracuse is a dismal 1-6 ATS their last seven against good defensive teams. These are teams that allow, on average, less than 64 ppg, which Vermont definitely does. The Catamounts are led by the superior play of Taylor Coppenrath, a post player that will be a challenge for Hakim Warrick of the Orange. The Catamounts crushed N'eastern in their conf. tourney final, and surprisingly will knock 'Cuse out early in the big dance providing coach Brennan with at least one more game before his impending retirement.
