I'll try to make a long story short here, but my dog ran away today. Now we got her about 2 months ago and she was about 6 months old maybe a bit older. my mother in law found her on the side of a road where she lives. she is like a half chiuaua/half retriever, to be honest, i have never seen a dog like her before, she was really cute. well anyways we brought her home, but she always was i hate to say it, but a pain in the ass. i can understand dogs need some time to get used to things, but she never shit/pissed outside all the time. anytime she got loose she ran away. granted sometimes she would come back, but most of the time we had to chase her. You could barely open the door and somehow/someway she could get out. the dog also chewed the hell out of my daughters barbies and toys, crap like that. well anyways, my wife, who is 8 months pregnant, opens the door to take the garbage out, VOOSH, the dog is gone. She tries to chase after it, but she gets short of breathe and goes back to the house. well the dog comes back 20 mins later and once again, my wife tries to get the dog, but the dog won't come by. 20 mins later, the dog is no where to be found. Now its like 4 hours later and dog is still no where in site. My wife feels bad, but i tell her that she shouldn't even be running around chasing the dog being in that state. I feel bad, but in a way, I don't.

Its almost like i feel the dog really wasn't maybe a house dog. she was found by some farm fields, because my mother in law lives in a well, a farm town.

Im stumped now. My wife doesn't want a dog, but we really feel bad what to tell my 3 year old daughter. she loved playing with that dog, oh thats really another thing about this fricking dog, it was always biting. It didn't bite hard, but enough to piss you off.

You think I should just go get another dog and if so, what places do you think I should recommend.????

thanks alot for you help guys

Invest in a shock collar. That will curtail the behavior faster than anything. You can then leave the collar off in the house and just put the shock collar or just the trainer on when the dog goes outside. Just make sure you ONLY zap her when she is in the middle of an unwanted behavior such as not coming when called, biting, running away, peeing in the floor, etc.

They have care shelters around.

just an example (I'm sure these type places are everywhere)

Kays Animal Shelter, Arlington Heights

My Mom got a dog there. The dog was given to the shelter by a couple that couldn't keep it because it grew too big. I guess they lived in an apartment that wasn't big enough. I believe the dog was $75 with shots and all. They do screen perspective adoptees of their animals to make sure it is a suitable situation for both parties. You may want to think about adopting an older dog from one of these places. These dog's traits are well established and you can take the dog outside of the shelter for a bit and see how the 1st meeting goes. Older dogs are less likely to be adopted, but are much cheaper and I think when you find the right one it would be safer for the young ones as well. These type animal shelters don't just want to put the dogs in poor situations to get them out the door.

You should be able to get a start online or try some local vets.

My girlfriend's older daughter just got a puppy for some pretty large coin. No reason for that IMO when there are a ton of great animals sitting in cages in these shelters looking for a nice home.

GL and glad to see the family keeps you on your toes. :drinky: :drinky: :drinky:

My brother called me back on this for me. Of course, he's on the job, his sergeant gave him this.....

-The Humane Society at Lasalle and Grand (donation type operation)

-Findapet.com

also....

-Enter type of breed

such as dobermans.com and you can find a lot out about certain dogs if you wish

Maybe the dog is trying to find it's real home...

You mentioned your Mother in-law found the dog on the side of the road. Did you try to find the real owner? There might be another family out there with a little kid that misses it's puppy...

If you get the dog back it's going to be tough to train a dog that is nearly a year old, and the urge to run will always be there since the dog has experienced freedom before. While getting a dog from the humane Society is always a noble deed, I have always had the best luck with dogs by purchasing a pure breed dog. I don't breed dogs but was told by a very well thought of breeded that many times the mixed breeds have genetic problems that are not correctable.

blitz, the dog was found near Carbondale, Illinois and I live in Chicago. 5 hour difference. I just think the dog has been used to roaming around or something. I just know somebody took the dog though. She was allways friendly with everybody and everytime we took her somewhere everybody always wanted to know what kind it was and where we got her.

Support Your Local Humane Society, they get alot of animals through these places, if u don't see the one u like go back the next week and their will be completely different animals.

The one I go to in Indy had 10,800 animals, cats, dogs, and even rabbits go through their last year, and they placed 4,400 w/homes and u know what happened to the rest of them.

Also they can tell u approx age, house broke or not and temperment around other people, other dogs and cats.

Martini, my dog, has been found!!!

She was over on the next street, some people found her and kept her overnight. We do have the dog registered and they got our address and phone number. I guess they kept calling us, but my goofy wife has her cell phone # for contact. Well her stupid phone battieres ran down so she never even checks her messages. Than i guess they stopped by our house, but we were in our basement and we never heard the doorbell. unreal. i guess the dog walked up into their back porch and started playing with their kids. im glad we got her back, i thought she was a goner.

Dogs are great if you have the time. Consider these facts before you get a dog.

1] You need to walk the dog for 1-2 hrs a day unless hes a little tiny dog but you still should walk him outside each day
2] Cold weather! I live in Toronto Canada. It gets cold in the winter and it sucks bad when the dog has to go for a walk and its minus 30c!! If you don't walk him, he becomes annoying and destructive.
3] It costs $$ to have a dog. About $50month for food, plus insurance $25 / month(recommended for all pups between 8 weeks - 2 years.... Mine chipped his bone when he was less than y year old and needed surgery which would have cost $2k! Shots and vaccines have cost me about $300 per year so far.
4] Time!! If you have kids, I would say you don't need a dog to suck up more of your time. If you have a wife you dont like, well, the Dog is the trick. :)

In the end, Dogs are great. My girlfriend and I have one. Hes a German Shephard pure breed. He takes up a lot of time. Money is the least of our problems with the dog. We both can pay for the bills easy but.. Time can't be bought with any amount of money and the dog does/has taken time away from us but its great when you want to :weed: in the park!!

If you want to buy a dog and its your first dog. Get him/her from a reputable breeder. Mix breads are good cause they take the better qualities of their offsprings. A reputable breeder alone is worth the extra costs to get a dog. I agree the humaine society has lots of pets but.. For your first dog, try to get something YOU want and get a pup. Its the funniest time for the kids and and you and you get to teach the dog exactly what you want. Lots of books and website out there to teach you how to pick the 'right' dog and what to look for.
