Weis spoke at the USA coaches clinic in Las Vegas over the weekend and I found his comments very interesting. There were other head coaches who spoke at that clinic (Sylvester Croom, Bill Callahan, Bobby Petrino, Frank Solich, Barry Alvarez, George O'Leary, Art Briles, Karl Dorrell) I was told Weis was the most convincing, and confident of the bunch. While others used power point presentations, overheads, and slides; Charlie used none of it. This guy knows what is going on. Here are some key points he spoke about.

3 Things you need to be a good coach.

1. Tell the truth no matter the consequences
2. Don't be the players friend
3. Coaching is Teaching

* He would recruit every top player in the country no matter where they live

* He told Bill Callahan in front of everyone they were going to be competing for the same kids "Hey Bill we're competing" was his quote. He also told the guy asking the recruiting question he had some big balls for wearing a Woodson jersey before Callahan was about to speak. Huge laughter!!

* A coach from Hawaii asked him how he could get Notre Dame to recruit some of his big polynesians. His Response was 574 631-7455 (Or something like that), which he then said "Sorry Bill" with a big smile. Huge Laughter!!

* Without Mentioning Nelson's name he told a story of a kid he was recruiting who told him "If you lose to pittsburgh in the AFC championship and come visit me I will sign with ND" His response..."Kiss my ass, I don't lose for anybody", he then said the marriage had irreconsolible differences at that point and needless to say he never contacted the kid again.

* He won't recruit anyone who doesn't want to play and compete right away

* He told the fastest kid on the team at ND, he would have to be prepared to play both ways.

* He spoke about his work schedule with New England 5:30 AM to Midnight

* He said the most difficult year he had in coaching was when he almost died from the surgery. The doctor said you'll be out 3 months, 3 days later he was back at work. He said he felt like if he was healthy the patriots would have won another world title

* I asked him about having to develop a young QB. His response.. "We don't have a young QB at ND, that's just a built in excuse"

* Person asked about scheduling and his influence. He said the pretty much were locked into the schedule til 07 but he would have say after that. he also said it is what it is "We're not ducking anyone". Great Quote

* Someone asked "Is there a game next year you are looking forward to?" His response... "Pittsburgh, Did you notice how he tried to bait me into the USC answer." Huge Laughs!!!

* He said the one possible excuse you have for losing is if the team is just more talented than you. You should never lose because you are unprepared for an opponent.

* He also said he was going to rip the S.I.D a new one because they were telling everyone about the state of ND football and using his name along with it. He said he is plenty capable of speaking for the sate of ND football.

I love it... I have been very impressed with everything Weis has done since being named NDs coach. At first I was disappointed like everyone other ND fan that we didn't get U. Meyer. But after listening to Weis, and seeing his passion first hand about the University. I couldn't be happier with anyone else.

So Cal
Turning ND around shouldn't be a big problem.
The team had plenty of talented atheletes LY,
but a lousy coach for the job.

some guys are just meant to coach at mid level schools

A couple things about Charlie Weis.
My Kids are in the same class as Charlies in Rhode Island.
Its a Catholic School here in the area. He has given not just his money (donated super bowl tickets to the school for a raffle, memorabilia for the yearly auction, plane fare to the super bowl, etc.) but his time (talk to kids in the athletic programs, etc)
He is a class guy,
He gave me a hard time, being a BC alum, that I would have to stop wearing my sweatshirt once ND became the class of the "Catholic Colleges" again in football.
As you may or may not know, his youngest has a bad disease (not sure the exact name of it)
Its going to be tough to dislike Notre Dame now that such a good person is running the program.
Good Luck to him... but not to much.....

Charlie Weis seems like a great guy, but Notre Dame is not an easy gig for anybody. Think about it, they start out @ Pitt, @ Michigan and Michigan State - and then the schedule gets tough!

The Notre Dame Soap Opera is always great drama - hey, the school has it's own television station! They will be pumping up Charlie Weis big-time, but that's nothing new. They did the same thing witht Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham.

There is a reason Urban Meyer turned down the job. If Weis does better than 7-4, he will have done a great job. My guess is more like 6-5. ...Yes, it should be a VERY interesting season in South Bend.
