i heard this morning on the mike & mike show on espn that there is a hot rumor........s.f. will trade their #1 pick to s.d. for philip rivers.....rivers is rated higher than the top qb's in this years draft.

they think that s.d wii either take the wide receiver from michigan, edwards, or trade the pick for a few additional picks.

i like this trade for both teams.

any opinions ?

As a embarrased 49 fan after last season, I would love to see Rivers as the QB. Sure, he didn't play any games - but I think this guy is a tremendous talent. SF needs a QB and SD is getting a number one pick. works out well for both parties, but wow - what a great position to be in if you are SD...

Read my signature lol...this is the stupidest trade I think I have ever imagine...Brees cannot put out 5-6 solid years at QB, he is to small and fragile, and a season like last year will not be repaeated stastically. Rivers was the future of this organization, and if he is traded, I will not be suprised if he wins an MVP up their lol

I think this could be a good trade for SD. Only thing is that it would be stupid to take Edwards as the first pick. I think they can get Mike Williams in the spot they already have locked up. I would trade for multiple picks, and take Mike Williams along with some defensive studs. I think Rivers was a horrible pick for SD, last year. Probably the worst QB drafted in the first round. The guy throws like a girl. Brees will be a much better Qb than Rivers for the next 5-6 years. Vyrus, Brees is still a young Qb with talent. I think Rivers is more of a gamble, he could be a great QB, he has that NFL build, but he is shaky imo, with that delivery of his.

Rumor is dead, would cost way too much for SD to do the deal. They woudl have to Rivers like $14 mil of his signing bonus.

furthermore, rivers is no slam dunk. why would sf not trade down for more picks ? they have needs at almost every position and need more than just a qb.

Elvis I agree that San Fran has ALOT of holes to fill this year, no point bringing in a promising quarterback into a team that will depend SOLEY on him and take away his confidence for the future...might as well build up their less popular positions (defense, o-line) this year, and then bring in a solid QB the draft after this one (Matt Leinhart, and lure Carroll up north to coach the Niners with him being able to win games with his stud QB)...just a theory

However I disagree about Rivers, he is a tough, hardworking QB and we all know that is VERY important to be a solid qb in this league..Everyone downgrades him because of his release, but the fact is the man can run an offense and shows on and off the field that he is a solid person who is willing to make sacrifices to see the others around him succeed...I think he will be a very solid QB in this league

no disrespect towards rivers - i enjoyed his career at nc state - his senior bowl was awesome as well. what i disagree with about the theory/rumor : sf has many needs. rivers will not make them a winner anytime soon.the chargers are carrying the weight a big $$ tied up by two qb's when we know only one can play. sf would be doing sd a favor by taking rivers salary off of their books (providing brees plays great again). therefore, i think the 49ers should be in a position to get more. the rivers' contract would probably be cheaper than signing the new #1 and rivers is probably a better qb than the ones available. basically i am a raiders fan disgruntled over the fact sd could further improve their team with the #1 pick and get salary cap space by dumping rivers contract. f' the niners if they do this. :cursin:

As before, rumor is dead. The Chargers are infamous for not wanting to sign for big money. their #1 picks always hold out until the season starts.

So the thought of eating 15 mil of Rivers bonus and signing a #1 pick for 15-20 mil is totally ridiculous.

What the Chargers will do is be able to watch Brees another year to better determine what to do in 2006.

In the meantime, the Chargers are in a TREMENDOUS position during the preseason/season. Any team wanting to get to the playoffs that loses a starting QB will have to pay heavy to get Brees or Rivers.
Teams like:
Green Bay
Dallas
Philadelphia
Washington
Atlanta
Carolina
St Louis
etc etc etc

You can be sure that Rivers will get tons of work in the preseason. The Chargers coaching staff will want him to look good in preseason
Week 1 -- Green Bay
Week 2 -- St Louis
Week 3 -- Minnesota
Week 4 -- San Francisco

The Chargers want to showcase both Rivers and Brees, but the 3rd string QB, Lemon, is very good also. look for the Chargers to pick up a few fast receivers in the draft to let their QBs light it up in the preseason. They are showcasing them for the trades.
Bet the Chargers in the preseason and the OVER.

ahjoah

Losing both starting guards means a worse running game, which means Farve has to do it, which means more total pass rush, which means a chance for Farve having the worst year yet.

Brees wont be happy in a back up role, so Farve would have to be broken in half.
