The Toronto Blue Jays trimmed their roster Friday, placing lefthander Ted Lilly on the 15-day disabled list.

An All-Star in his first season with the Blue Jays in 2004, Lilly was placed on the DL retroactive to March 25, with left shoulder tendinitis. Last year, the 29-year-old matched his 12-10 record from 2003 with Oakland while tossing two complete games - including a shutout - and posting a 4.06 ERA in 32 starts.

Lilly was diagnosed with tendinitis in February and did not pitch for Toronto this spring.

Curt Schilling was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday by the Boston Red Sox, a move that was expected as he works his way back from offseason ankle surgery.

Manager Terry Francona said the right-hander will pitch against minor leaguers two more times, and then is tentatively scheduled to start for the World Series champions against the New York Yankees on April 13 at Fenway Park.

Right-hander Wade Miller and outfielder Adam Stern also will miss the start of the season. Miller (right shoulder strain) and Stern (broken right thumb) were put on the DL retroactive to March 25.

Schilling, who had surgery on his right ankle in November, was placed on the DL retroactive to March 26.

``He should only miss about 10 days of the season, if everything goes according to plan,'' Francona said. ``His rehab is going very well.''

Schilling won't be idle.

He is scheduled to pitch in Fort Myers, Fla., on Saturday, rejoin the Red Sox in New York and then pitch for Pawtucket at Indianapolis on April 7, when Boston's top minor league affiliate opens its International League schedule.

Schilling has pitched in one major league exhibition game this spring and two minor league contests. He faced Indianapolis in his last game, allowing two runs, five hits and a walk and striking out seven in five innings Tuesday.

The Red Sox also placed righthander Wade Miller and outfielder Adam Stern on the 15-day disabled list. Miller, who is recovering from a right shoulder strain, is targeting a return in early May.

Miller, who is eligible to return on April 9, was signed as a free agent in the offseason. The 28-year-old went 7-7 with a 3.35 ERA in 15 starts with the Houston Astros before having his season ended on June 26.

Prior to his injury-shortened 2004 campaign, Miller had reached double digits in wins three straight seasons, going 45-25 from 2001-03.

Miller enjoyed his best season in 2002, going 15-4 with a 3.28 ERA in 26 starts. He matched a franchise record with a 12-game winning streak from July 7-September 21, 2002.

In 127 games, including four relief appearances, Miller has gone 58-39 with a 3.87 ERA. He has allowed only 699 hits in 768 career innings, striking out 659.

Stern has a fractured right thumb.

Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin named Brad Halsey the team's No. 5 starter on Friday, according to the Arizona Republic. Halsey beat out Michael Gosling for the final spot. "Both of them deserve to make the team," Melvin said, "and we're struggling right now having a long guy, too. We have some guys down there that we don't really feel like, at this point in time, can give us a long-inning type of stint. So, I felt good about keeping Gosling even though he hasn't been a bullpen guy before."

Dodgers' pitcher Elmer Dessens will start the fourth game of the season against the Diamondbacks, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Athletics pitcher Rich Harden had a blister on his pitching hand punctured and the dead skin surrounding it removed before Thursday's game, according to the Associated Press. His first regular-season start on Wednesday should not be affected.

Because today's game was rained out, the Indians and Braves will play 11 innings in Atlanta tomorrow.
The Braves want Tim Hudson, Mike Hampton and John Thomson all to get work in. Hudson was scheduled to start today

Kris Benson's first regular-season start was pushed back two days because the New York Mets pitcher has a strained right pectoral muscle.

Benson had an MRI exam in New York on Wednesday, and the team revealed the results Friday. He originally was scheduled to start the third game of the season next Thursday in Cincinnati, but left-hander Kazuhisa Ishii will pitch instead. Benson will go Saturday in Atlanta.

Benson felt the strain after pitching Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals, but said he now feels fine. He returned to spring training camp in Florida on Wednesday night and took Thursday and Friday off. He planned to have a light throwing session Saturday. Also, right fielder Mike Cameron might miss the season opener because of pain in his surgically repaired left wrist. He was scheduled to have an MRI exam in New York on Saturday.

Cameron, who had surgery in December, felt discomfort Friday morning and had difficulty swinging the bat during a simulated game.

``It was an abnormal pain I hadn't had before,'' he said.

Team doctors examined Cameron on Friday and determined the problem was related to scar tissue, general manager Omar Minaya said.

The Mets said it's still possible Cameron could be in the opening day lineup Monday at Cincinnati.

Cameron played his first major league exhibition game last Thursday after spending most of the spring recovering from surgery.
