I think it depends on how you define sport. It's certainly no less of a sport than golf is.

Curling is amusing to watch, though. I had it on this morning.

Took Curling in High School, it's fun to Play. It's a about as much of a sport as Darts, Bowling and Pool. All aren't a sweat sport unless you count the sweat on the Beer glass.

It is an Olympic Sport!

As the resident Curling expert, I will confirm it is a sport and is a lot harder then it appears to the naked eye. Considering the winner of the event you were watching is a 4 time world champ, and is from Canada where I belive there are about 1.5 million curlers, he makes it seem pretty easy.

I've been curling for over 20 years, and wouldn't rather do anything than be on the ice curling.

I curled a lot growing up; not so much in the past few years as my knees are kinda shot. Fun to play, but about as exciting to watch as watching paint dry. Even a lot of curlers find curling boring to watch. LOL

There's actually a lot of strategy and skill to it. Ice conditions can change as the game goes on (moreso when televised as the TV lighting can warm up the ice). You may have more swing in certain parts of the ice, or more when going in one direction than the other. Quite a bit of skill involved too. These guys at this level can all draw to the button (center of the house) practically on-demand. Considering that little foot-wide area is whatever it is (100 feet away? I don't know)...well, that's impressive to me.

And if you're not the skip (team captain, and the guy who holds the broom and screams at his team), you DO actually get some exercise sweeping.

HURRY HAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

Gravy.....that's what I was thinking the first time I saw it.....

Give these guys some wax and let them shine the floors at Walmart......

Next thing they're going to be called "athletes".......I heard some people a while back talking about golfers and Nascar drivers being "athletes".....

WTF??? Can they even run? Can they do anything besides drive a car fast at a tire-changing contest or hit a golf ball?

Athletes have to have some physical stamina.......try football, basketball, hockey, and maybe baseball when you go out looking for athletes......

Next thing poker players will be athletes because they have to sit for long hours holding thier piss in.......

What's the next Olympic event, competitive match burning?

You guys can call it what you want, but I think you'd be very suprised how much fun it is and the exercise you get during a real game.

in curling you have to sweep 60 rocks down a sheet of ice, if you are a first, second, third, skip is the only one the does not sweep.

considering you have to do that for 2-4 games during some tournaments would like to see how many "pro " athelets could do that.

I watch scott tournament of hearts (cdn. women championships) and the brier (mens), and besides Ferbey cannot think of another curler who is not is good shape.

of coarse I have watched baseball, basektball, football, and there has never been anyone who is out of shape playing those sports on a pro level.

Jawz was correct 1.5 million cdn. are active curlers. and 1 in 5 have played the game.

since 1997 I have meant to start and set up a team (to play in division d or e...the worse players) however have been to busy (classic excuse, and played hockey and broomball)

most of the curlers you see on TV are in better shape than 90% of the population, maybe 95%.

curlers do not whine about getting paid millons (10 million not being enough to feed ones family).

they volunteer their time at charity bonspiels.

anyways this winter I hope to joins the ranks of the curlers.

thanks

i dont think you should be allowed to sweep just tell the guy to throw it right next f,n time. imagine any other game where you can correct your mistake mid shot

Okay, now I HAVE to take issue with baseball players being athletes here.

Looks more like a skill to me. Not a whole lot of running going on there. Look at some of the beerguts on the pitchers mounds over the years.

Curling is a sport, being able to play the game at the top level is a very hard skill to aquire, just like throwing a ball 100mph over home plate without killing someone, or being able to put a ball through a hoop from 18 ft. It's just everyone's different view if it's interesting to them or not.

I've played against some of the top players in the U.S., and they are all very good athletes.

That's my opinion.
