Congratulations!

Bow or Shotgun?

Did the guys you were with haze you a little bit afterwards?

Shotgun, and haze me for what??

Rex, we gobbled up one I helped my dad kill Tuesday. Quite good, and probably my favorite wild game to eat and certainly my favorite to hunt.

I'll get those pictures up tonight after all the kid running around :rolleyes

Kosar, I think I took a picture of everything individually so you will better understand.

On turkey calls, there are box calls, slate calls, and diaphragm calls. The latter are what I prefer as they are hands free. The diaphragm call fits right in the roof of your mouth, and you can make all the "hen talk" hands free.

Here's a picture of my favorite (Legacy Leading Lady).

and a .wav file of what it sounds like in use. http://www.gameacc.net/Leading Lady.wav

Thanks man. Do you *have* to use one of those things or can you just use your voice to simulate a hen? Sqauwwwk, gobble, eeeeeckkkk. Like that. Seems like that is more fair than using an artificial device to trick them. But that's just me.

Haze you for what?
For killing your first turkey!
Maybe haze is the wrong word to use. Its more like being initiated into a club by having to drink some of the blood from the deer or turkey, or being held down while others smear the blood all over your face, or in my case having your whole head dunked in a bucket full of blood and guts. God it was awful! I'm getting nauseous just thinking about it. You act like you have never heard of this and your from KY. I don't know anyone around here who has killed their first turkey or deer and not had something disgusting done to them. Once anybody has had it done to them, they make damn sure to pay it forward!

broker- I'm pretty sure it's not his first turkey... just his first turkey of the this particular season.

Broker, funny you should bring that initiation ritual up. We had some guy come hunt on our farm a few years ago who had never hunted deer before. We had told him about something that had to be done if and when he got his first buck. He shot one, and once he started guttin it, we told him he had to drink the blood from his heart. You should have seen the look on his face, but he was determined not to disgrace himself in front of us and do what we had told him we all did. I could barely hold it in and we let him get right to the point of holding his heart up and him taking a deep breath, but then we grabbed him and stopped him, while everyone busted out laughing.

As bjfinste stated, I also agree that this isn't sixfive's first turkey.

broker, first turkey (of this year), I've killed more. ALso, I was hunting by myself, so nobody was there to try to "haze" me. Once you explained that, I know where you are coming from, and that kind of thing is done, but I think usually more associated with deer camp.

Kosar, I can also mouth call just using my natural voice. The problem with that is it doesn't sound as good, and it's not nearly loud enough. As far as it being fair, a turkey has terrific sight, so if you move even a hair when they are looking your direction, you are busted. Unfair would be using a taped recording which is illegal.

Lots of guys can't use those diaphragm calls, but like I said, they are my favorite.

No hunter basher responses in this thread. I think if hunting is presented in this way and discussed and explained and people know you eat the meat, the great majority have no problem with it. That's refreshing.

Sidenote: I called my son's school to see if I could get him out of class briefly and show him my turkey since I killed it on a school day right at 1000. The teacher was cool with it and asked if I couldn't show it to the whole class. I was kind of suprised, but happy to do it. I had a whole class of kindergarteners around me and the turkey and I showed him off from head to toe teaching them the whole time all about wild turkeys. A few were just interested in where the "bullet" holes were, lol, but I got all kinds of questions that were great. The kids loved it, the turkey was presented in a flattering way (you know, not all bloodied up, etc), and I think it was a great teachable moment for them all, some of whom would never be exposed to this. One little boy said, "Mr. P., my daddy doesn't know anything about hunting! Can you teach him??!!" LMAO!! I said not everybody liked hunting, and that his daddy probably had other great talents and things he liked to do in his spare time.

Thanks.

65,

nice going !!

when will you be serving it ?

and will it be stuffed ?

thanks

We had a big meal of dad's Tuesday kill last evening. Quite delicious. This turkey was breasted out, so no stuffing this time. A wild turkey's dark meat is a whole lot stronger and gamier, and they are so lean that there's not as much of it. Most guys breast them now. Dad's smaller bird will take around 3 full meals to consume, so there's still tons of meat breasting them. Thanks.

i'm curious.... are you saying that a wild turkey tastes different than a turkey that you buy at a store.?

Yes, very different. Domestic turkeys are so fat and don't get near the exercise a wild turkey does. They are more tender because of it. They've also been bred for taste characteristics just like chickens, beef, etc.

I'll second that on the difference in taste. It's significantly different. I mean, not like the difference between turkey and beef or anything, but very much noticable.

I apologize SixFive, I thought you meant it was your first turkey ever. None the less, it was a nice looking turkey. :toast:
