The wife is up north tukey hunting this weekend I am being lazy this morning so I thought I would tell everyone about last years deer hunt. This as an absolute true story.

The wife, her friend (whom we will call B) and I headed up north on Thurs night so we could check out the public lands before opening day.

We get up early Fri morning and head out tho check out where we want to put the tree stands. We are going down a walking trail into the woods when we see a tent set up right in the middle. We walk up to it (because its blocking the trail and we need to get by) and this guy comes out. His name was Jerry. He is straight from the 60s. I believe he may have had to many mushrooms in his younger days. We say Hi and he starts explaining that that he asked permission from a game warden and was told it was all right for him to camp out there. We didnt even ask him so I dont know why he was explaining. Then he starts in on how he loves the woods..bla bla bla. He said he was moving his tent off the trail and and pointed to where all his other stuff was.We are not talking normal hunting stuff here...I think he just thru everything that he owned in garbage bags and decided to go hunting and sleep in the woods. We talked for about 15 minutes and headed down the trail. He seemed harmless enough..just weird.

We get about a mile into the woods (still on a walking trail) and B says she found a spot for herself. She marks it and we start heading back out. Along the way I marked my spot and the wife then found hers so we were good to go. Now B starts saying that she is kind of nervous about being back so far in the woods.

After listening to her complain for a little while I told her that we would set her up closer to the edge of the woods that way we can drop her off first as we are walking in. We found her a spot and she built up a small blind. Now everyone is good to go.

We run across Jerry on the way out and he is hauling a bag of potatoes. We explain where we are hunting so he is aware of it. He says he is going about 2 miles into the woods to be with nature and hunt. Whatever.
He then tells us that we are more than welcomed to come by his camp the next day and he will cook us up some potatoes. Ok..like that will happen.

We go back to the cabin and head to the bar (which is exactly 20 steps from the cabin we are staying in) :mj14: We had a good time teasing B saying that Jerry really liked her and if she wasnt in her hunting spot she would probably be in Jerrys tent having some snuggle time.

We get up the next morning and head into the woods. We park the truck and are getting our gear out when B starts patting herself down. I know exactly what this means...she forgot something back at the cabin. She forgot her shells. How you can do that is beyond me but she did it. There is about 1 hour before the sun comes up and there is no way I am driving her back. Everyone had different guns so lending her shells wouldnt work. The wife says she isnt going back so I toss B my keys and explain how to get out. Go up the road to a stop sign..turn right..go to another stop sign...turn right again and this road will lead you right into town and the cabin. Not to difficult..right??? Wrong

The wife and I head into the woods and we get to the wifes spot. She sets up and I head to mine. I get set up and to make a long story short didnt see a thing the whole morning.

About 11am my wife comes walking down the trail so I get out of the tree because I know we are headed out for lunch. She didnt see a thing either.
She says my truck isnt here. I ask what do you mean and she tells me again..Your truck and B are not here. She had walked to where B should have been and not seeing her she went out of the woods to where the truck was suppose to be. It wasnt there. We are walking out wonder what happened when we see B coming down the trail. She says she couldnt find the spot where we parked. (it shouldnt have been that hard...driving into the woods all you have to look for is a gate on the right hand side and you can see a big open area where vehicles park..the other vehicles parked there would also have been a dead give away) She then starts to apologise because she burned up all the gas in my truck..no big deal. Then she asks why I didnt have my cell phone on. UMMMM..Maybe because I was hunting ???

She apologised for the messages she left. I listened to them later and it was not good. The 1st 3 were saying she couldnt find the place and she was going back to the cabin for a nap. 4th one was why wasnt I picking up my cell phone..UMMMM...Maybe because I was hunting?? The 5th one pissed me off. She says she is going back home and maybe we can get a ride from Jerry.

WTF is that??? We are talking about 8 miles to get out of the woods by vehicle and then its about 15 more to the cabin. I tell the wife that bullshit and she agrees. We decide to put this behind us and go get some lunch.

The wife just called...she saw a huge Tom about 6 this morning and called him in. She waited a little to long before taking the shot and the bird spotted her and took off.

On with the story..

After lunch we went to a different area of the woods. This place was extremely nice the trees were huge and spaced perfectly. We decided to hunt from the ground here. We walk in (on a trail again) and I go off to the left and found a good spot. I marked which way was back to the road and sat down and waited. The wife dropped B off to the right of the trail and she went farther in the woods. We all had radios and were on the same channel. I sat there for about 3 hours and didnt see anything. I went back to the trail and headed down to where my wife and B were. I didnt see B but I saw where my wife was. She asked I saw B..I said no. She explained that she should have been to the right of the trail.

Then she tells me that after dropping off B she was walking in and saw a real nice buck just in the woods about 100 yrds in front of her. She lifted her gun but couldnt get the deer in her scope and the deer just walked off.

Now its time to get B and try at the edge of this open field I saw earlier. There is about 2 hrs of hunting left in the day. We were standing around and we heard 3 shots fired off. 1st thing we thought of was hit the damn thing already. Then we realized that it shots came around where B got dropped off. We are thinking maybe she got one so we headed back there. She wasnt there. We looked for about 30 minutes and couldnt find her. I tell her Im going back to the truck to see if she is there and she is going to keep looking. I get to the opening by the road and see B sitting on the tailgate of my truck. I get the wife and we head out.

We get to the truck and B is completely freaked out. She says she got lost in the woods. Instead of staying where she was suppose to she started walking around and ended up getting turned around. She was yelling thru the woods for us and calling on the radio but she was to far away so we didnt hear. Then she asks if we heard the 3 shots. We tell her yes..we thought it was you shooting at a deer. She says no..she had seen a movie and person was lost so they fired off 3 rounds. She shot 3 times to let us know that she was lost.  So I ask her..Dont you think it would have been a good idea to let us know that if you got lost you were going to do that before we went into the woods? Let me see ..its opening day and you are hearing shots fired all the time and we are suppose to know you are lost because you fired 3 times. OK

Now Im getting irritated..so I say..Hey at least we didnt think of leaving you and having you look for Jerry for a ride out.
It was a quiet ride back to the cabin. We all settled down and went for a beer. We talked about it and after a while we were making jokes of the situation and we told her that tommorow would be different..just put this day behind us and move on. We said that we would put her in a spot and that is where she should stay. We would make sure one of us could see her at all times.

We get up the next morning and I am loading up the truck..I go into the cabin and thell the ladies to hurry up or this bus leaving without them. B says that she is not going to go. She wants to go home (she had her own vehicle.) She says that she dosent belong in the woods and she misses her family. We all talk for awhile she is set on leaving so we say our goodbyes and head off to hunt.

Nothing at all that day. I called my uncle who lives up there and he had offered to let us hunt his land opening weekend earlier. We declined because he has to kids that hunt and we felt it wouldnt be right to his kids for opening weekend. The deer are usually running around all over the place there opening weekend and his kids are young so let them have the fun.

We went to his house on Mon because his kids were in school. He put us in a permanent tower stand and he went off to the other one on his propety. 2 hrs later we heard a cannon go off. I dont know what he was using but it was huge. He came out by us and said he shot a huge buck. we went to look for it but couldnt find it.

Side note...he finally found it 3 days later..it was a 11 point buck. The meat wasnt any good but he is going to mount the head. He has won shows for taxidermey so I will have to see how it turns out this year.

I am in the stand and all I see is a white ass going across the field. It was a doe. It came out from behind the stand. By the time I got up it was halfway thru the field. I bang my gun on the window sill and it stopped and looked at me. Then I started thinking it might be to small. While Im thinking she made it all the way to the edge of the field by the woodline. It was the last day we were going to hunt so I put her in my scope and shot. Nothing. the deer just stood there and looked at me. I had missed completely.

In my excitement I had forgotten what my uncle had told me about the affects of wind and how fast a bullet drops on a long shot. I readjusted for these factors and took another shot. The deer dropped right there. It was the perfect shot.

My uncle told me later that it was a great shot. He knows the distances from his stands. It was a 300yrd shot with a 30.06.

The deer was on the small side but it sure looked bigger thru the scope. :grins:

Thats it for the story. B will not be going up with us this year.

Scott,

He wasnt homeless. He had a beat up station wagon that he drove from Greenbay and he said he always does that because he loves nature so much. I had saw him opening morning and he was walking back into the woods with his rifle and was dressed in his blaze orange. He just had to many mushrooms in the 60s.

Now that I think of it I may have just met YYZ and didnt even know it. He is from Greenbay so it all makes sense now.

Good story. Surprised you didn't shoot each other, or did you?

yank, yank

Good story, bubba. You're a better man than me rifle hunting on public land :scared

Side note. Went turkey hunting with a buddy this morning. Set him up for the shot since he hasn't taken a bird yet. Called in a double bearded boss. 11 1/4th and 8 inch beards, 1 1/4 spurs, 23 pounds.

At least in your part of the country, hunters can identify what they're after. Farmers in New York State cover their livestock with blankets identifying themselves. COW-HORSE-ETC. I'm not making it up. Years ago, a New York newspaper had a photo of a car on the New York Thruway with a small cow tied across the hood of his car.

Sixfive..Outstanding bird..  . I dont turkey hunt because I know it takes a lot more effort than I am willing to give. I know I would make way to much noise in the woods.

Hunting on public land isnt to bad . Just about every other hunter is only about 100-150 yrds of the road. They are to lazy to walk back in because then if they shot something they would have to drag it out that far. We had used a gps the year before so we knew when we hit the 1 mile mark. There wasnt another soul around there that far back.

Talked to the wife last night and all she saw was a couple hens in the afternoon. Hopefully today will be the day.

Danmurphy.. I have heard stories of people putting orange on there livestock because of some dumbasses. Usually its the ones that will close the bar at 230am and then go into the woods at 0500 am to hunt.
