DETROIT: DH Dmitri Young missed Sunday's game with the flu. Manager Alan Trammell is hoping to have Young back on Monday when the Tigers start a four-game series against the Red Sox in Detroit.

CHICAGO: INF Willie Harris left the team on Sunday for personal reasons. Manager Ozzie Guillen is hoping Harris will be back with the White Sox on Tuesday when they begin a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals. .

OAKLAND: RF Nick Swisher left in the third inning with an injury after crashing into the wall chasing Jeremy Reed's triple. Swisher, who also slammed his head into the wall, underwent tests on his right shoulder and his head at a hospital. A's trainer Larry Davis said the team wouldn't know Swisher's status until Monday. ... Manager Ken Macha is considering using upcoming off days to juggle his rotation so Barry Zito and Rich Harden can each start three times during an upcoming 12-game stretch against the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, beginning Friday in New York.

ATLANTA: 3B Chipper Jones hopes he'll be able to rejoin the lineup after an off day. He hasn't started in a week after injuring his left foot running the bases. The Braves open a two-game series against the NL East-leading Florida Marlins on Tuesday, and Jones would like to be in the lineup. ``It's just a wait-and-see process,'' he said. ``It's frustrating. I wake up every morning thinking I'll be able to play, but then I get on the field, get out there running, and I'm just not able to run.'' Jones was used as a pinch-hitter in all three games against the Cardinals, going 0-for-2 but driving in a run with a bases-loaded walk. ``Pinch-hitting is not my forte,'' he said. ``I would like to get four or five at-bats, get into the flow of the game.''

PHILADELPHIA: 1B Jim Thome was not in the starting lineup. He left Saturday's game with a lower back sprain, the same injury that plagued him through spring training. Manager Charlie Manuel said Thome is day-to-day. ... 3B David Bell (back) and LHP Rheal Cormier (hip) are also listed as day-to-day with their injuries.

GIANTS: INF Ray Durham missed the final two games of the three-game weekend sweep in Pittsburgh with a sore left groin. He was bothered earlier by a sore right groin. ... The Giants used 11 relievers -- seven Saturday, four Sunday -- as manager Felipe Alou tries to settle on a mix without injured closer Armando Benitez. Alou went to his bullpen four times Sunday while up 8-3. Alou said: ``I'm searching, I'm looking for guys. We are trying to put people in the right slots. I believe we had our people aligned well until Armando got hurt, now we're starting all over again -- and it's not spring training.'' .

CHICAGO: RHP Kerry Wood's troublesome right shoulder felt much better Sunday, a day after he left three innings into a start against Houston. Wood has tendinitis in the shoulder, the same problem that cut short a previous start last week. ``We still don't know anything yet,'' Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. ``He felt strong and good after the game. That's what's so mind-boggling about him.'' Wood's status won't be determined until he is examined by a doctor Monday in Chicago. ... Injured reliever Joe Borowski will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. Borowski made it successfully through a simulated game on Saturday. ``We were more satisfied with his performance than he was,'' Baker said. ``We were very pleased with what we saw.'' Borowski has been on the DL since March 25 with a broken wrist.

WASHINGTON:RHP Esteban Loaiza, starting Monday night against the Dodgers, traveled to Los Angeles on Sunday, ahead of the rest of the Nationals.
Washington Nationals reliever Joey Eischen suffered a broken right arm in Sunday's game against the New York Mets.

Coming on to start the seventh inning, Eischen was injured just four pitches into his outing after fielding a ground ball off the bat of Kaz Matsui. He gloved the ball and landed hard on his arm.

After staying down for a few moments, Eischen walked off the field holding his forearm.

The only lefthander on the Nationals' staff, Eischen is tied with Luis Ayala for the club lead with 15 appearances. He is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA.

Carlos Guillen wasn't able to play Sunday because of swelling in his right knee, but Trammell said "there's a chance he'll play (tonight)."

"He said he felt something when he went for a ball in the hole (Saturday night), but he's been tight," Trammell said. "His legs have been tight -- again, he's just not all the way back yet. We said right from the get-go that we'll have to watch him daily.

"We're talking about someone seven months removed from ACL surgery. I give him credit for being this far along, but these are the things we kind of have to deal with. It's not unexpected."

Dmitri Young also wasn't able to play because of the flu.

Manager Terry Francona wouldn't announce tonight's starter yesterday, but it's going to be PawSox righthander Jeremi Gonzalez. Tim Kester started in Gonzalez's usual spot for Pawtucket yesterday, and Gonzalez's belongings were not in his locker at McCoy Stadium.

Gonzalez is not on Boston's 40-man roster, and to clear space, the Sox will designate Dave McCarty for assignment today. McCarty, Millar's backup and a defensive replacement, either will be traded, released, or placed on waivers. If he's put on waivers and if he clears, McCarty has the option of going to Triple A Pawtucket or becoming a free agent.
Gonzalez last pitched Tuesday and is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 24 innings (four starts) with Pawtucket. Gonzalez, 29, was 0-5 with a 6.97 ERA in eight starts last season with Tampa Bay. In 50 1/3 innings over 11 total appearances in 2004 he surrendered 72 hits (including nine home runs) and walked 20. He actually began 2004 as Tampa Bay's No. 2 starter before his season unraveled.
"I got to work with him a little bit in spring training," said catcher Jason Varitek. "He can locate with some different pitches. He sinks it a little, cuts it a little, he's got an OK changeup. He's got to locate."

With Gonzalez going tonight, and John Halama tomorrow, that gives the Sox back-to-back starts out of two guys who last season combined to make 22 starts with Tampa Bay.
