"the bunker"
BEREA - The joy ride Kellen Winslow Jr. took on his motorcycle last Sunday is expected to cost the Browns highly-touted tight end the 2005 season.

The Tribune Chronicle has learned that Winslow suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Surgery will be required, which means that Winslow will likely miss the upcoming season.
Timetables for recovering from ACL surgery vary depending on the severity of the tear and the individual. A common reference point is a minimum of eight to 10 months, but it's possible that Winslow might need a full year to recover from surgery.

The Browns issued a statement Wednesday afternoon confirming that Winslow was still hospitalized, but no details of the knee injury were given. The statement did say that concern remains with the right knee. It went on to say that the team wouldn't comment on any aspects of his contract.

Winslow, the seventh overall choice in the 2004 draft, was hurt when he lost control of his Suzuki GSX-R750 and hit a curb in a parking lot of a community college in Westlake. Winslow, who was traveling an estimated 35 mph, was thrown over the handlebars and landed in a landscaped area. His helmet flew off, but he didn't suffer head injuries.

A report on the "CBS Sportsline" website stated that Winslow might have punctured a lung and hurt a kidney. The kidney injury is believed to be a bruise.

Winslow spent Sunday night at Fairview Hospital. He was transferred to the Cleveland Clinic Monday to be evaluated by Browns' physicians.

Missing the 2005 season could cost Winslow plenty of money because of a breach in Paragraph 3 of his contract that states he must refrain from participating in hazardous non-football activities that involve a significant risk of injury. Activities include, but aren't limited to, skydiving, hang gliding, mountain climbing, auto racing, motorcycling, scuba diving and skiing.

The team could recover $5 million of his initial $6 million signing bonus and the entire $4.4125 million option bonus that was triggered in early March. Winslow received $2 million of that bonus in March, but the remaining $2.4125 isn't payable until July 15.

Agents Kevin and Carl Poston negotiated a six-year, $40 million contract for Winslow last year, which is the most lucrative ever for a NFL tight end. The total value was reduced to $29.4175 million when Winslow failed to meet an incentive for playing time because of a season-ending ankle injury suffered in a week two game against the Dallas Cowboys. The one-time incentive would have activated $5.367 million in future bonuses and $5.215 million in future base salaries.

Winslow is the latest in what has become a long list of Browns first-round draft choices that haven't panned out. Quarterback Tim Couch (1999) is out of football with a sore arm. Defensive end Courtney Brown (2000) had an injury-riddled five-year run and was released in March. Defensive tackle Gerard Warren (2001) never played up to expectations and was recently traded to Denver. Running back William Green (2002) was arrested for DUI and possession of marijuana and is in Stage 2 of the NFL's drug program. Center Jeff Faine (2003) has finished both of his seasons on injured-reserve with leg injuries."""

i heard that he had just seen a motorcycle stunt show and may not have even been properly licensed........can`t confirm that info....

whatever...an amazingly stupid thing to do...considering the consequences for him....and the browns organization...

i hear ya. although i wouldnt go so far as to say his attitude/selfishness has anything to do with it. his stupidity is more than enough to make him look foolish. when i defended him coming out of college, it was more on the basis of his athletic ability outweighing any concerns of selfishness.

while its way too early to throw the bust tag on him, this latest mishap is inexcusable.

obviously hes not the only guy in the nfl who has put himself at risk by getting on a bike. a lot of players have 'em.

....but my question is how dumb do you have to be to fu.ck around on a motorcycle after youve already had to miss a full season due to a fluke injury.

thats for sure. No way any intelligent person would risk losing 4 million or whatever it is.

Ride your motorcycles when you have earned the money.

ACl tear like that is bad news on top of the ankle injury from last year. He may never reach his full potential now.

It turns out he was actually trying to impress a crowd that had gathered. I stumbled upon a tape of the incident, just before the crash, as he was looking into the crowd:

as a raven fan,and not exactly a browns` lover, i must admit, the prospect of winslow, braylon edwards and lee suggs wasn`t exactly a pleasant scenario to ponder...an excellent offensive nucleus....

Entrepreneurs auctioning debris from Winslow's motorcycle online
Friday, May 06, 2005
Dennis Manoloff
Plain Dealer Reporter
Capitalism in the Internet age is constantly taking new forms.

Someone using the e-mail identification "goatmeat420" heard about Kellen Winslow Jr.'s motorcycle accident Sunday night and saw dollar signs.

Goatmeat420 apparently visited the Tri-C Corporate College parking lot in Westlake where the Browns tight end had crashed into a curb. Goatmeat420 claimed to have found pieces of Winslow's motorcycle, as well as the tag from his coat (as far as we know), and turned them into opportunity.

The collection of debris is on sale on eBay. As of 10 p.m. Thursday evening, while Winslow remained in the hospital recovering, 36 bids had been registered, with a high of $127.61. The listing ends Wednesday.

Two other listings offered debris purportedly from Winslow's motorcycle, and spotted earlier Thursday on the Internet was the shrub, or mini-tree, that Winslow uprooted in the accident. By midafternoon, however, the shrub had disappeared from the cyberspace sales department, presumably because it is property of Tri-C Corporate College.

Goatmeat420 wrote on eBay: "If I was interested in this kind of stuff, I know someone else may be, as well. So here is your chance to own a piece of history from what may be a future Hall of Famer's career."

The debris includes a brake fluid cap.

Goatmeat420 responded by e-mail to The Plain Dealer's request for a phone interview, stating the request would be taken into consideration.

Evidently, goatmeat420 has been busy handling e-mails concerning his venture. Among those posted on the Web site, in Q-and-A format, were:

Q: . . . I give you credit for coming up with a great auction idea.

A: I am getting mixed feedback on this auction. Let me just say that I appreciate all the support I've been given, and I am just as open to answer any and all questions as long as they are asked in an appropriate manner. Again, I'd like to thank everyone for your interest so far.

Q: I hope he sues you for selling his personal property.

A: If Mr. Winslow were to contact me himself, I would have no problem getting his personal property back to him.

Q: Are you donating 50 percent of the proceeds to KWII's retirement fund?

A: I am a Browns fan first and foremost, so I am hoping there will not be such a fund for a very, very long time.

Q: Just to make sure I have got this straight: You are trying to profit from someone's personal injury that has put them [sic] in the hospital for at least three days? Have I got that right?

A: I will admit that the same question initially crossed my mind. After some consideration, I have obviously decided that if I was so interested in possessing these items, I would put it out there to anyone else who shares the same enthusiasm for similar memorabilia.

Who can ever forget Winslow's "Were Soldiers" rant after the Tennessee game a few years back. Right after seeing that I said to myself "this guy is looney"..........
