ERVIN SANTANA Santana has risen steadily through the organization since being signed as a free agent in 2000. The 22-year-old was 2-1 in eight starts with Arkansas last season and went 10-2 while leading the California League with a 2.53 ERA and a .212 opponents' batting average at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga in 2003.
Santana at 6-foot-2 and listed at 160 pounds is a power right-hander with a good fastball and a good slider. Along with right-hander Steven Shell and left-hander Joe Saunders, Santana represents a strong group of pitching prospects that are nearing the Majors.

The Angel hierarchy had no worries about handing tonight's game to Ervin Santana, a 22-year old right-hander who was called up from double-A Arkansas. He will make his major league debut tonight for the Angels.

"What I like about him is his composure," Angel pitching coach Bud Black said. "He has a lot of poise for a young guy. That calmness will obviously benefit him in the long run."

Santana, who was 5-1 with a 2.31 earned-run average in seven starts at Arkansas, will probably get two starts while Kelvim Escobar is on the disabled list because of a bone spur in his right elbow.

"In spring we didn't know where he fit on the depth chart," Scioscia said. "His talent was eye-opening."
