Not sure where to start off.How about today. My four children are in Philly at the Live 8 concert. But lets start from the beginning.
It is Aug 13th,1969.Box has graduated HS in NY and in 3 weeks is going to go off to North Texas St Univ. in Denton,Texas.Boxes 3 best friends are off to Bowling Green,Villanova, and Clarkson[hockey player] in a few weeks.Mr Clarkson buys 4 tickets to Woodstock in Bethel,NY.I can't get off work because I work in an Amusement Park[Rye Beach] as a soda jerk on the boardwalk.[if you saw the movie BIG with Tom Hanks you can see my stand right next to Zaltar in the movie, also in the movie Fatal Attraction when Close kidnaps the kid]]
My buddies are going nuts on me.They had all quit there summer jobs already and the following week we all were going to the Jersey shore together for our last fling.I couldn't go. I tried to beg my boss but he had nobody to open and close the stand.I didn't want to quit.I had worked for my boss for 4 yrs.He treated me good.I was making a whopping $1.40 an hour and minimum wage was $1.25.Plus I got overtime off the books.I was saying "show me the money way before Tom Cruise".
So my ticket was quickly sold to another one of our buddies.
I remember working in the park on friday nite and listening to a radio station. The famos "weekend in the country" was closing down the NY State Thruway. It wasn't a concert..it was an event.
Got home late that nite and saw the news. For the whole weekend I was so upset that I was missing one of the biggest events in my life time and I'm making banana splits and ice cream soda's.
Well, when thet got back ahhhh. The stories I had to listen too were torturing. It's over 30 yrs and I still hear them from these bozo's. Of course they all said they "scored".That I know is a bunch of BS.They will never let me forget about missing the weekend. At my 30th birthday, and 40th and 50th.At my 50th birthday I got a Woodstock CD of the movie. And to make things even worse they got in the freak'in movie.Mr. freak'in Bowling Green walks right across the screen..ahhh
Looking back now I do regret not going. But a part of my justifies not going because I was a responsible kid, hard worker, dependable, etc. I couldn't leave my boss, etc. But thats BS too.I had the chance and let it get away..I missed an event that is now an adjective in our vocabulary"Woodstock".
On Thur. I returned from vacation with my wife and 4 kids from Niagara Falls,Canada[had a great time] My oldest daughter from Austin got a call that nite from her former roommate who is in graduate school at Temple. She had just won on a Philly radio station two nites in a Philly hotel and stage standing area's for the Live 8 concert. The group 50 cents cancelled so their rooms were given to this radio station.
My "longhorn" daughter was excited because her roommate invited all my kids plus there friends.
My son Mr East Carolina jumped on that and called his best friend. My youngest daughter a soph in HS was going. But my middle daughter,Miss East Stroudsberg had other plans. Her ex-boyfriend was coming home for the weekend and she needed to talk to him.
Well,I had to tell her my long ass boring story that you all read now[I know I lost some of you already]about Woodstock.
I convinced her to go.Dave Mathews and Lincoln Park are two off her favorite groups. How can you miss something like this esp when you guys are right near the stage.
Well,The cell phone calls are coming in every hour. They are right in the front and having an experince of a lifetime. And what one of my kids is having the most fun.Miss East Str...I think my wife and I have seen them on MTV but we are tapping it.
I'm glad they are all there and hopefully safe. When they get back tomr I'll update this on some of there stories...
But can you imagine if there were cell phones in 1969 and my guys were calling me..ahhh
It's nice we all stayed close over the yrs.Mr B.Green is a big time lawyer for Phillip Morris co.Mr Nova is an engineer and owns a contructsion company on Maryland, and Mr Clarkson is a psychiatrist.I know none of there kids went to Live 8....The irony of missing Woodstock is that who would know that Bethel is near where I have lived the past 30 yrs in the Hudson Valley.
Hope everyone here is doing fine..Haven't told a long ass boring story in awhile.
