I've been watching WC for the last 3 hours and I haven't seen them report a gust over 80 miles an hour. "Category 4.......it's gonna be a bad one. 135 mile per hour winds." BS!

I'm glad they were way off(especially for our fellow Madjacker's). Next time I'll take off about 50 miles per hour on their ridiculous predictions.

People could have stayed home for this one.

I'll probably get masacred by some of you but this is just my opinion. I'm sure I'll hear, "Better safe than sorry." I just think Weather Channel was a bit dramatic.

weather channel dramatic? Surely not, lol!!

I'm sure Jim Cantori was right out in the breakers as usual reporting amidst threat of hurricane destruction.

I still think our local tv station is more dramatic than the weather channel as I would say a lot of small local stations are. The local station forecasts about 1 out of 5 correctly regarding snow.

Of course the Weather Channel is dramatic. How the hell do you maintain a whole network around 'weather?'

But it landed as a Cat 3, which is considered a major hurricane(3,4 and 5). Same as Ivan and Frances last year and stronger than Jeane. One step down from Charley, which was a 4. It gained steam over the last 18 hours to a Cat 4, but calmed down slightly.

The highest recorded gusts so far were 121 mph at Navarre Beach(Where MJ poster Ocelot lives) and the highest sustained so far was 99 mph in the same town.

Those winds are extremely dangerous to property and person and will be devastating to many people, mostly financially wise.

Obviously you've never dealt with these before, Nole.

They had an article in the paper a couple of weeks ago on how bad the weather guys are here in Knoxville. Of course, they blamed the Smoky Mountains.

Still watching WC. They're back-peddaling quite a bit now. "Not what we expected but look at that power line down, and here's a puddle of water 3 inches deep."

I've got a few buddies in P-cola and of course in Tallahassee. Hope they didn't run to Ky. to get away from this "Cat 4".

Lump Fox, Cnn and the hurricane center in the same boat, all saying the same thing. Hope all is well, did see quite a bit of crap flying down the street. Guess always better to be safe than sorry.

Peace,

Hey Ocelot: Was the road from Pensacola Beach to Navarre destroyed (yet again) from Ivan last year???

Hope all is well there. Lived in Pensacola/Gulf Breeze for 5 years and Nitwit (from this site) lives in Destin.

I remember after that road was finished it was really nice the way it was done. Awesome beach view right to Navarre and someone said it was destroyed after Ivan. Is Pegleg Pete's still standing?

Nole, under a tornado warning, is your opinion that it wasn't necessary to hit your basement because your house came away untouched and your neighbors house is now kindling?? (and let me tell you, it is weird to go thru, seeing the barn less than half block away ripped up and having your *wind damage* being minimal.)

Until youve been thru a hurricane you really dont know had dangerous it is even if its a Category 2-3 or 4. 2 years ago convinced me to get the hell out of town and seek shelter somewhere else and im glad i did. Winds in a hurricane will snap trees life twigs its not even funny. Its not the rain thats bad its the damn wind in a hurricane that scares the hell out of me.

TV Hurricanes, war, kidnapping, falling off bicycles is entertainment
If you are fear focused, you'll run. Kids were surfing - people took care of their personal business and the morons with microphones and drenched video cameras, politicians aping for the tube. Rent a movie

Here's a link to the Pensacola newspaper that has several galleries. Overall the storm was small and moved through very quickly. As you can see in the photos Navarre and Milton which is north of the bay took it the hardest. FWB and Destin have significant beach erosion. Most home decks on the water are gone and I believe 5-10 houses fell in due to erosion. There is one condo in Destin that now has 20 of parking lot then 30 feet of open space with about a 10-foot drop off then the condo, which is on the now exposed pylons.

Road between Navarre and Pensacola Beach was only re-opened about 2 weeks ago. I believe though that Hurricane Cindy had already closed it again and Dennis definitely ensured it was finished. Still no power in Navarre. I got off with relatively minor roof damage. I tall pine snapped off at the top. Since Ivan took out all the weaker trees already that helped. I am 2 miles from the Sound and the wind was intense and sideways. I agree WC probably hyped it a bit but when I woke up the night before and heard it had suddenly increased to 145 mph I was seriously considering evacuating inland at least 20 miles to my parents in Milton.

Hwy 98 to Okaloosa Island cut again. As for Pegleg Pete's I suspect it probably still stands but road there I believe knocked out also.
