Great job, Michelle, for having the success that you have had in the golfing world. I, personally, feel she would gain much more by continuing to play on the LPGA, get a taste for winning, then trying to move up to the top league.

I feel all of the major leagues of all sports should be considered open territory. If someone is good enough to qualify and compete, then I feel they deserve a shot to compete with the best in the world. This goes for ANY sport, in my opinion. There are secondary leagues, i.e. LPGA, Champions Tour, WNBA, etc. for those that can not compete at the top level due to what the league or society has deemed as a major handicap (sex, age, etc.).

Golf and Wie not qualifying like others: If you want to stop this, then you MUST be against ALL sponsor exemptions in all sports. There is only one reason that the purses in golf are so large, and that is the sponsors money. If the sport allows them the ability to give sponsor exemptions at their descretion, then Michelle Wie or any other female is as deserving as anyone else.

I don't really like sponsor exemptions because it feeds the circus of sporting events. Could you imagine if NASCAR had sponsor exemptions and they threw a less talented driver on the track? That would get UGLY! If you can not qualify through the parameters set up by the league outside of special exemptions, then in my opinion you should not be playing in the competition.

Any takes?

Can't buck the part of being sponsors money therefore it's their choice. This weeks John Deere Classic good example--hard to get exposure and with weak field before British Open tourney has been in financial trouble--Wie was boost to tourney no doubt so what can one say. However did not care gov of Hawaii to step in and "ask" for exemption there.
Use to think after continuous cuts the fever would fade--but don't think it matters anymore--the media will keep the hype and the circus side show will continue.

Point well taken. Although I don't think the sponsors would trot out anyone who they don't feel is qualified, but I see where you're going with this. Just goes to show that $$$ talks I suppose.

As mentioned, Wie brings attention, and that's what the sponsors wanted when they gave her the exemption. I mean, I don't like golf, but I watched some of this event to see her play.

I agree with a sport like NASCAR, or any sport that involves direct competition because it could compromise the actual event unless the athlete is legitimately good enough to be there (I think Wie has shown she can at least play at that level). But in a sport like golf (or bowling or any other type of event where it's just the player vs. the course and then scores are compared, i.e. no actual head-to-head competition), I'm all for it.

But in Wie's case, I do think it's justified. If Wie were a 15-year old boy coming that close to making the cut in a PGA Tour event, people would probably be calling him the next possible Tiger Woods.

Didn't know about DTB's point about the Hawaii gov., though. I agree that that is out of line.

Wie brought much added attention to the JDC here this year!! don't know enough about the PGA to know if the exemption was solely for sex, or if it was for age also.... i think it was the age thing that brought on the exemption.... and she came DAMN close to making the cut for a *not so little* girl.

its makes me sick though that all day friday ESPN has to cover her shot by shot update, than they open Sportscenter up Saturday morning with her losing. Give me a break. Wie is a great player, but she hasn't won anything on the LPGA. Its a great story and all, but do you really have to open up Sportscenter with her. I changed the channel because of that crap. Just like Danica Patrick and even Jenny Finch. SI has top put out Jenny Finch on its cover. Im preety sure 70% of america could care less about Womens profensional softball. Great she's hot, but I can go pick up a Maxim or FHM if I wanted to see that. Drives me nuts lately how sports is gearing towards all this womans movement crap. Danica Patrick hasn't won diddley squat either and ESPN makes her out to be the next Dale Earnhardt.

A little on her talent level---While there is no doubt she is exceptional she is not even ranked # 1 womens amatuer in U.S and has not won on that level in a couple of years.

As far as pga material--here are #'s and you be the judge.Has missed cut in every male pro event-3 pga-1 canadian-1 nationwide.

Here are how her #s stack up on 3 pga events vs the pros.Keep in mind if as you consider these # vs pros that her #' come before the cut (easier pin placement) on courses ranked 37 and 38th on tour in difficulty with 2 events on home turf.If she had to play with week end set up and/or tougher courses these #'s would disipate MUCH more.

Her stats
Driving distance 267.8 would rank 188th on tour
Greens hit in regulation 57.4% would rank 190th on tour
Scrambling 52.6 would rank 165th
Putts/green in regulation 1.774 would rank 59th

VERY poor #'s for tour player especially in light of easy courses and easy set up prior to week end----but very good #'s for 15 year old of any gender.

Bottom line on my thoughts-- her abiltiy should be spent on events where her goal and ability would be to win-- not make cut>

But from her standpoint the exposure and hype have made her a multi-millionare when she turns pro(endorsements)--regardless if she ever wins any event anywhere in the future. Not a bad position to be in ;)

This -would be my best wish for her as well. There is nothing like getting the taste of winning and learning how to do it consistently. She is not going to do that on the PGA tour right now. If she spends her time on the LPGA or even trying to qualify for the Nationwide Tour, she would gain much more for her game. The only advantage to her playing in the PGA events for her is the future monetary rewards. But I also think if she continues to play PGA and not make cuts, she will start to diminish her returns later.

"Dogs that Bark" has hit the proverbial nail on the head. Wei cannot compete with the men on any level....PGA, Nationwide, Mini-tour, etc. I doubt she could even win the club championship at some of the local clubs around here. She would go broke trying to play professional golf on any tour, except the LPGA.

With that said, she is a hell of a talent for a 15 yr. old....especially a female.

I'm pretty certain that her Dad is on Nike's ( or someone similar) gravy train. He can take a "consultant" fee and then he, as a parent, can compensate her any way he wants.....just the way Earl rode his way into the Nike stable prior to Tiger turning pro.

Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, the notoriety she has established is a sponsors windfall. The media hype will sell tickets up the TV ratings. Everyone benefits except the poor golf pro whose spot she took.

Where is that prune-faced Martha Burke now?

Once again Sportscenter has to have Wie in their 30/30 Updates. Great for the update, but I don't think she is going to do any damage in this tourney.

--- Michelle Wie faded down the stretch again and shot a 6-over 76 on the first day of stroke play at the men's Amateur Public Links on Monday. Playing in front of a huge gallery, the 15-year-old tied for 84th in the 156-player field. The low 64 scorers over 36 holes of medal play -- the second 18 is Tuesday -- move on to match play on Wednesday.

If you noticed she wears nike hat everywhere had huge nike belt buckle--coincidence???
Hows this-- Nike is flying her in privite jet to womens british open!!
Lots of LPGA players plenty pissed about it--and rightfully so.

While she has has been media's darling she has not made many friends on any tour along the way.

As Kdogg noted yesterday she was eliminated in 1st rd in mens amatuer ranks (link below)--When in the history of any sport has a person received so much exposuer for failure?

She didn't get eliminated....yet. She is currently tied for 84th place, the top 64 advance to match play.
