Anyone ever buy a car from a private dealer??

I'm looking at a car and the guy says he is a private dealer that works out of his house. Anyone know how I can check to see if the guy is legit?? What precautions should I take??? What should I have done to the car before I buy it???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd wear a wire and during your conversation give him the universal shush sign, then open your shirt to show him the wire. Hand him a pre-written note with a time and place to meet him and by this time he arrives he'll be so happy that you didn't drop dime on him, that he'll give you a helluva of a deal on one of his stolen cars.

That's what I would do

Good Luck

In Cullyfawnia, if you sell more than X amount of any property you need to be licensed. Have the KBB price for the 3 conditions of the car you want and I would take the vehicle to a AAA unit and have the car thoroughly inspected, if he hadn't already done it for you. If there is no overhead, you should get a decent deal. Check the laws in your state and get everything in sensible writing. No "as is'

I have a few friends that have enough of a license that allows them to go to auctions and buy cars. Here, they technically have to have a "car lot", but that definition is very broad, and it's not hard to meet that requirement. The guys I know who do it go to auctions and look for whatever people request. They then help you with the paperwork and charge you about 500 bucks for the transaction. Great deal most of the time when you compare to a traditional car lot. However, I would want to have a previous relationship with a person before I did this. You also have to have your money ready (these guys aren't going to finance you).
