The Baltimore Orioles on Saturday traded right-handed pitcher Sidney Ponson to San Diego for first baseman Phil Nevin, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports.

With Ponson moving to the Padres, the Orioles deal to acquire Florida Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett has been shelved.

A three-way deal with the Orioles and Texas Rangers, which would have sent Burnett to Baltimore, was "killed" by the Orioles this weekend, according to a baseball man familiar with the deal, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported. So the Marlins are believed to have broken off talks with Baltimore, at least for now, and are back to focusing on offers by the Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.

Lowell, who is batting a disappointing .230 with just four homers and 39 RBI, is owed about $21 million through 2007.

Ponson was moved to San Diego once he refused a trade to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for left-handed reliever Trever Miller.

Nevin has not yet agreed to the trade. He has a limited no - trade clause and Baltimore is one of the teams. Everyone thinks he will, but it still isn't official.

Hate the trade for the Padres, but love it as a dodger fan.

You guys also got Joe Randa to replace Nevin for two minor leaguers. That is a good trade for ya.

Looking at Ponson's stats most would say that it's a terrible deal for the Padres, but Nevin has been very disappointing this season and I don't think he's fully recovered from his phantom injury.

Along with getting rid of a slumping bat it also enables the Padres to move the worst LF in baseball, Klesko, to first base, a move that automatically improves their defensive outfield no matter who they replace him with.

Team defense will also improve with Randa and he is having a good year at the plate. Luckily they aren't giving up anything for him.

These are not blockbuster moves by any means, but I don't think the team needs to mortgage their future. Their players need to step up and play ball.

If I remember correctly I think you are in belief that St. Louis is going to run away with the NL Pennant. You're certainly not going out on a limb with that prediction, but I'll pray for Peavy, Eaton and Williams to pitch out of their asses come October.

I am the one with the belief that St. Louis is the class of the NL. I hate em, but they are far superior to anything the east or western divisions have and its not even close. A team 30 games above . 500 is clearly superior to a team 2 games over in the west. I don't like the Padres obviously, but I'll give you credit for being better than the dodgers so far even with a losing record against them. I stand by getting Ponson is worthless becuause his velocity and mechanics this year are a joke. I do however like the Randa pickup as it will add another bat with better defense than Nevins. I realize that they play the games and any team can win on any given day and in a short series, but to think St. Louis clearly isn't the best team in the NL and all the other teams are playing for 2nd is erronious. Their record speaks for itself and their pitching staff is a major upgrade from last year. I told you before that you have something that the dodgers didn't have facing them last year, an ace in Peavy. Even though he got shelled yesterday, he still has great stuff and in a 5 game series that can be huge. Again thats why they play the games, but again, St. Louis is far and away better than anything else in the NL.

Not sure why Baltimore would trade a SP when their biggest need is pitching. And now I hear that the Burnett deal is dead.

The Padres announced Monday night that first baseman Phil Nevin has declined a trade to the Orioles and will remain with San Diego. "Phil has elected to stay with the Padres and will be treated as a full member of the team," said general manager Kevin Towers
