Rumors are swirling that Miami Heat President and former Heat, Knicks and Lakers coach Pat Riley wants to make a return to the bench. The only problem is the job that Riley is rumoring to be taking over is that of the Miami Heat, who already have a coach, and a good one, in Stan Van Gundy. Riley has said that Van Gundy is much of the reason that the Heat have been successful in recent years and that he has the utmost confidence in him as a coach.
Van Gundy has also been quite complementary of Riley as well, saying that he has helped put together a team that has a great chance of winning an NBA title. All the pleasantries could be over quickly if Riley gives Van Gundy the axe. It would be a very controversial move considering that Miami had the best record in the Eastern Conference last year. A similar situation arose 3 years ago when then Detroit Pistons coach Rick Carlisle was given the axe by team president Joe Dumars so that the Pistons could hire Larry Brown. Carlisle had won 50 games in back to back seasons before his departure.
