WAGERWEB.COM POSTS ODDS: ?WILL MIAMI HEAT COACH STAN VAN GUNDY BE FIRED OR RESIGN BY OPENING DAY 2005?

(Zapote, Costa Rica, 15 July 2005) Is it just a matter of time before we see one of the greatest coaches of all-time back on an NBA Bench? Rumors are swirling that Miami Heat President and former Heat, Knicks and Lakers coach Pat Riley wants to make a return to the bench. The only problem is the job that Riley is rumoring to be taking over is that of the Miami Heat, who already have a coach, and a good one, in Stan Van Gundy. Riley has said that Van Gundy is much of the reason that the Heat have been successful in recent years and that he has the utmost confidence in him as a coach.

Van Gundy has also been quite complementary of Riley as well, saying that he has helped put together a team that has a great chance of winning an NBA title. All the pleasantries could be over quickly if Riley gives Van Gundy the axe. It would be a very controversial move considering that Miami had the best record in the Eastern Conference last year. A similar situation arose 3 years ago when then Detroit Pistons coach Rick Carlisle was given the axe by team president Joe Dumars so that the Pistons could hire Larry Brown. Carlisle had won 50 games in back to back seasons before his departure.

"It appears that Riley once again has the itch to coach," said Wagerweb.com CEO Dave Johnson. "It is very tough, though, to get rid of a coach who has been ultra loyal to you and was one game away from the NBA Finals last season. Nonetheless, we have already received a tremendous amount of wagers on Van Gundy leaving Miami and Riley taking over the reigns.?

Based on RIley's recent comments, it looks like Van Gundy still has a job, but if they struggle at any point next year, I'm sure Riley will cast Van Gundy aside in an instant.
