i don't know if anybody has seen these documentaries, on hbo about baseball.

there have been 3 installments so far of these shows going back to 1920's-1930's using 8mm footage that various people took.

i have gotten into discussions with older people about when the "golden age" of basebal was.

some said it was the 40's,right after ww2, & some said it was the 50's when nyc had 3 teams fighting for the championship......

i don't know which is right, but for me the golden age of baseball was the 60's, which was the 3rd installment of "when it was a game".

nobody can convince me that today's players, as a whole, are better than the players from the 60's when there was........

willie mays.....the best all around player that i have ever seen.

roberto clemente......who did everything so well & had a "gun" for a right arm.

mickey mantle was my boyhood hero, but imagine having an oufield of.....aaron, mays, & clemente in the starting oufield......with frank robinson, al kaline ( most underated great player ever), & mantle backing the starters up.

can today's pitchers compare to these starters...

sandy koufax..... the best pitcher that i have ever seen over a 5-6 year period.

bob gibson, juan marichial, don drysdale, & whitey ford completing the starting 5......with jim maloney, luis tiant, fergy jenkins, & jim palmer backing up the starters.

bob costas talked about a scoreless pitching duel between marichial & a 42 year old warren spahn....with each pitcher going 16 innings...with mays hitting a winning homer in the bottom of the 16th.........

does anybody think that a pitcher of today being able to do that ?

other than the yankees, i don't follow baseball much any more.......& now think football is the greatest game......but there is nothing like talking about the history of baseball.

I think if it wasn't for the racism that kept the top black players out of the majors, the 20's and 30's could've been considered the best ever. It's what I've always considred the golden age of the game. When you look at some of the historical names of that era and the talent on the field, it really is dazzling. I always wonder just how much better some of those teams would've been if they'd not only had the players they did, but also taken the top guys out of the negro leagues.

Ruth and Gerhig are without question -- at least in my eyes -- the greatest 1-2 punch in the history of sports.

i know very little about baseball. but with what i see on tv about the history of baseball, it seems like it will never be like it was. i know there are great guys now in the game, but it seems like alot of the stars are complete primadonnas, alot of which probably take illegal einhancements. would take a miracle to make it as pure as it was.

i agree that ruth, gerhig, mays are the greatest ever.
