LOS ANGELES ? USC defensive end Jeff Schweiger suffered a stress fracture in his right foot near the end of the season's first practice Thursday and will miss about eight weeks.
Schweiger, who was listed as a starter on the Trojans' depth chart after spring practice, said he is scheduled to have surgery on his right foot today.
He had been in competition with Frostee Rucker (Tustin High) for the starting job as the Trojans' speed rusher. Schweiger likely will be out for at least three games.
"I was running, and I felt it," said Schweiger, who said doctors will put a pin in his foot. "I just couldn't put any weight on it."
Schweiger said he tried to practice after he felt the pain but couldn't run or cut on the foot.
"We were excited about Jeff," said USC coach Pete Carroll, who said he wasn't considering redshirting Schweiger yet. "He had a great offseason, and I'm really disappointed he started the year that way."
Rucker started 12 of 13 games last season but dealt with toe and shoulder injuries throughout the season. He said offseason surgery and rehabilitation left him in good condition.
Carroll said Chris Barrett (Tustin High) and Rashaad Goodrum will compete for playing time behind Rucker.
