Schweiger suffers foot injury, out 8 weeks
The USC defensive end will have surgery today to addresss the stress fracture.

By TODD HARMONSON
The Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES ? USC defensive end Jeff Schweiger suffered a stress fracture in his right foot near the end of the season's first practice Thursday and will miss about eight weeks.

Schweiger, who was listed as a starter on the Trojans' depth chart after spring practice, said he is scheduled to have surgery on his right foot today.

He had been in competition with Frostee Rucker (Tustin High) for the starting job as the Trojans' speed rusher. Schweiger likely will be out for at least three games.

"I was running, and I felt it," said Schweiger, who said doctors will put a pin in his foot. "I just couldn't put any weight on it."

Schweiger said he tried to practice after he felt the pain but couldn't run or cut on the foot.

"We were excited about Jeff," said USC coach Pete Carroll, who said he wasn't considering redshirting Schweiger yet. "He had a great offseason, and I'm really disappointed he started the year that way."

Rucker started 12 of 13 games last season but dealt with toe and shoulder injuries throughout the season. He said offseason surgery and rehabilitation left him in good condition.

Carroll said Chris Barrett (Tustin High) and Rashaad Goodrum will compete for playing time behind Rucker.

Because I am sick of the constant bullshit and this guy turning every post into the USC fan site. USC was actually always my second favorite team until walking distortion came along.

USC will do fine - the schedule ensures that.

As for the Horns I am not so sure. Ohio State will be tough. OU is nowhere near as good this year but only time will tell if that even matters when it comes to Mack Brown.

I think we are looking at USC v some 1 loss team which will of course be a crapshoot based on polls and who loses when.

I agree about Mack Brown Sun, but I think this will finally be his year...he arguabley has the best advantage to actually take this one this year with Vincent Young hitting his stride at the end of last year and I think he will make a run at the Heisman this year, which includes a bullrush through Stoops and his squad...I agree that it will be hard to get past OSU for the Horns, but I think if they can conquer that team then the stride will be set to get past OU for once...also, I think it would be awesome to watch Miami's experienced, SOLID D vs USC's attack

Great point Sun. USC is an over-rated, talentless squad with no chance at all except for that easy schedule they have year in and year out. Great analysis.

Not saying that at all. But heck, why bother going with what i say when you can make it up along the way, right? They are a fine team. Probably the best team. But the best teams dont always win. But there are no real challenges on the schedule to lead one to see a possible stumble. Most other "challengers" have much tougher roads to the Rose Bowl.

Do you have, or have they (whoever that is) come out with schedule strength predictions yet>

Havent seen one - and how could one really be done mathematically with no games played yet anyway? But I can read and have two eyes. The Pac 10 had 2 good teams last year and one of them lost every key player. ND is terrible and Arkansas wasnt good anyway AND lost their starting QB. They dont have anything like Texas playing Ohio State or Oklahoma, or FSU against miami, va Tech, florida, and so on. USC is probably a class above, they just dont have to prove it until the Rose Bowl.

Normally someone will come up with SOS numbers that obviously change from game to game.

That doesn't make much sense.

Right now in the CFB forum, there are exactly 4 threads that have USC in their subject line. I started ZERO of those threads.

I would say at least 75% of the time I talk or mention USC it is in reply to someone else making a comment about USC.

Those are the facts!

USC plays 6 road games. Check out these 4 road games.

@Oregon
@ND
@Arizona St.
@CAL

For OOC USC plays

@Hawaii
Arkansas
@ND
Fresno St. (who many feel is #1 non BCS team in country)

USC always plays 2 heated rivalry games every year ND and UCLA. Rivalry games are always tough to win and USC has 2 huge rivalry games. UCLA is @USC this year but it is more of a 55-45% crowd.

Give me a break the schedule ensures USC going to the Rose Bowl. For the last 3 years USC has had easier time beating BCS opponents in their bowl game vs winning Pac 10 conf. games. All 3 of those BCS bowl opponents were considered to be one of the hottest teams in the country heading into their bowl game. The results speak for themselves. Pac 10 conf. play is tough. USC prob. plays the top 4 pac 10 teams in the conf. all on the road. You better believe these teams are gunning for USC and will be bringing their "A" plays. Winning on the road is so much more difficult than winning at home. I think it is easier to beat a good team at home vs beating an average team on the road. Or maybe you could argue both games are equally tough. But my point is playing on the road is always tough no matter who the opponent is. With USC this year, majority of their tough games are on the road.

USC is plenty tough, but the Defense is taking some hits, especially on the D-line. The Trojans have had a great DL the past three seasons and it played a big part of their success. It would be hard to imagine USC being as strong this year on D.

I think Cal will give USC it's best game. They have a stud RB in Marshawn Lynch and may be able to eat clock and keep Leinart off the field. Plus, Tedford always seems to come up with a good game plan against USC.

I am not sold on Texas for some of the reasons stated above, but also because they lost their best Offensive and Defensive players in Cedric Benson and Derrick Johnson. Also, I think there is excessive hype about Vince Young.

While I think Ohio State should be on probation, they could be plenty tough. They have loads of talent on Defense and game-breakers on Offense. If their running game is decent, they will be hard to beat.

And while it's a trendy pick, I like Florida, A LOT. I would take Chris Leak over Vince Young in a heartbeat. And they always have a boat-load of talent.

Son,

ND beat that vaunted Michigan team and Tenn last year with the worst coach in the country. Lets not call them terrible. When you talk schedule nobody plays one like Notre Dame!
