I don't get it with this organization. They come off to me as always being an elitist bunch of left-wingers that have their head in the sand when it comes to issues.

Take Florida State for instance: The Seminole tribe has publicly stated that they feel they are being honored by the way that FSU portrays their tribe. The Seminoles work with FSU to make sure that they are performing certain rituals correctly, so that honor is upheld.

BUT the feckheads in the NCAA office stand back and basically tell the Seminoles that if they're not offended, they should be. And really the reason why you're not is because you don't know any better.

I'll cut it off with a big ol'

FECK YOU, NCAA!

An elitist bunch of left-wingers, eh?

Well, in this elitist left-winger's eye, the only team in the country that should change its name is the Redskins. That is a blantantly racist name and I can see why they'd be pissed about it. The rest I think convey respect, and I don't really understand what the big deal is that keeps pushing this to the forefront. My guess is under-the-table money getting thrown around by people who want change.

Yes. I think people that waste time talking about issues like this are elitist and they are left wingers. I am not calling them Democrats or centrist leaning to the left. I think they are on the left fringe and don't represent the majority. I think they are elitist because the impression that I get is that they are for changing the rules even when the demographic that is supposed to be offended is not.

In reference to Redskins, I never knew that it was a derogatory term. If so, then I think it is a different case and should not be lumped in with the rest. The last I checked Seminole is not a demeaning name.

This is not a political debate.

Once they clear this up, they will get right on the cost of education, performance enhancing drugs, on campus violent acts (against women etc), and the ability to improve THE ACADEMICS of the athletes (90+% that never see the pro game).

But, IO, it should be clear to all of us average joes who are too dumb to think for ourselves that these mascots are the cause of all of the aforementioned problems.

You must have priorities!

If it's not a political debate, then why did you immediately begin your initial post with politically motivated comments?

It really doesn't matter... I'm not sure if you misinterpreted my post, but with the exception of the Redskins, I completely agree with you. The names don't need to be changed, and this should be a non-issue. The NCAA could be far better served putting together a damn playoff for college football than worry about garbage like this.

agreed. i guess it is a matter of me thinking that left wing does not constitute a political comment. it's more of a fringe personality type. just like right winger or neo-con or whatever the term may be.

I don't group responsible Democrats (who I think are the majority of the party) in with this group.

Cheers

Agree, only Redskins is offensive. What next? Swedish-Americans don't like Vikings name? Steelworkers are miffed at Steelers? Cowboys? Conquistadores offensive to Spaniards and/or American Indians?

Then PETA protests use of all animal names?

I was listening to sports talk radio yesterday and they were discussing this. We should take their advice and call up the NCAA and tell them we are short, red-headed Irishmen who are mighty P.O.'d that Notre Dame has an offensive looking mascot that makes us all look like drunks itching for a fight...

Not only do the Seminole tribe support FSU's use of their mascot and name, I once saw a survey that said that over 60% of all Native Americans said that they were not offended AT ALL by various universities using Indian nicknames.

If someone could convince the 5-7 "major" NCAA D-1 football playing conferences to say F.U. to the NCAA and form their own organization, the NCAA would die overnight. I'm sure none of us would miss them in the least.

The NCAA should stuff it.
Hey, I think I would be kinda proud to have a team that had a nickname to honor me......really& seriously. I have given it a lot of deep thought, trying to put myself in the "offended" group's position and just can't do it.
I bowl with some Seminole Indians on Tues. Nites and they all seem to wear some Fla St apparel . I never talked to them about it, but they don't look too offended to me.
