Okay mjer's, heres the scenario.

I have been in the same fantasy football league for nine years. Buy in is one thousand bucks, and we have ten teams. The original ten teams, so everyone has been in it from the beginning and its a fairly competitive league.

Top three places pay with first getting 60%. That's not the point. The point is, I have NEVER monied in this stupid thing. I mean, I like fantasy football like the next guy, but I'm beginning to see apparently how much I suck at it. Nine years and stuck 9 dimes or something like that and never gotten a penny back. Its not the end of the world and it's not the money even, its bragging rights too. And your boy BleedDodgerBlue is known among his peers as the worst fantasy football player ever.

So heres where help is needed. We draft 30 deep and start 15 players each week. The scoring is so complex, nasa computers are needed to do it. Just bear in mind that yardage, length of tds, and all the good stuff is included. Combinational I think its called, but with lots of more stuff added. Gives me a headache thinking about it.

This year I landed the number one pick. I would say great, but since I suck so bad, it really doesn't mean much. So, since I'm so bad at it, I need mjer's to chime in with who to take. I'll say I'm leaning Manning, but need others to give me a voice of reason, so I'm not known as such a loser at fantasy football anymore. Thanks in advance and any serious suggestions would be great.

Need to know your scoring critieria before answering. Do you subscribe to anything to help you? With $1k invested it may be worth it. I would recommend draftsharks.com. Low price and a ton of good info. Anyway, I would take Tomlinson with #1. If you take Manning, by the time the draft gets back to you there will be no RB of value left.

A running back is usually the #1 pick in the majority of the drafts.

Lots of players talking up tomlinson for good reason

In his 4 seasons in the league he has put up nice numbers 10,14,13,and 17 touch downs respectively.
Yardage between 1236 and 1683.

But if i had the first pick it would be Priest Holmes.

This guy can be a big time money maker for you.

Last season he was hurt only playing 8 games and still scored 14 touchdowns and 800 yards.

2003 (1400 yards and 27 TDS)
2002 (1600 yards and 21 TDS)

And the man can catch the ball....

So Priest Holmes would be my pick for sure..

Also with Tomlinson....the chargers have a brutal schedule, would not be surprised if they are playing from behind alot this season...

Win the money this season. :mj14:

Thanks for the response so far guys.

Heres my thinking, and I'm sure I'm probably wrong with it.

Last year picked 4th and ended up with Ahman Green and you know how much he sucked. It seems running backs have more of a propensity to
get hurt more so than qbs. Manning is such a unique situation because his numbers with that offense are absurd. Plus he's never injured. I realize that a running back is so important and that I won't get one again until the 20th pick, and probably get a loser like a Tiki Barber or something (no offense soul train). I just think that by taking Manning I'm assuring myself a big stat player with little downside based on his history of not getting hurt and no signs of that offense slowing down anytime soon. Holmes and Tomlinson are much more likely to get hurt IMO. Plus, there are bonus points for touchdown passes and runs over a certain yardage, 30 yrds, if correct, and plenty of Mannings passes are bombs, wheras Tomlinson doesn't have that many, Priest does though.

Its a tough spot, I'd almost rather have the 3rd pick so my choice is made for me. I even considered trading down to 4 and maybe taking Alexander because hes in a contract year, and we all know how the players play in those year.

Again, thanks for the responses, and hopefully I'll make up my mind soon, but I do have another 3 weeks before the draft to lose sleep over it. It's definitely not the money, but the bragging rights. I'm tired of being the bitch in the league.

look at the chefs off - priest is a great player early, imo. but by week 10 he could easily get hurt again. he is such a big contributor to them. il like tomlinson because shittenheimer loves to run and tomlinson is less likely to get hurt. he is a slasher and does not take the direct hits priest does....it is a toss up, but i would take lt. lastly, a safer pick would probably be manning. he will put up another 30tds this year, and he should not get hurt. i would probably take manning and hope that a julius jones is there for you at #11 - if that is an option, heck lamont jordan may still be there at 11 as well.

Top fantasy football teams almost always have two top running backs. Have to get two top tier RB's in the first 2-3 rounds.

Hard to give advice without knowing at least the general scoring system. But generally speaking, with the first pick you want a running back like Tomlinson, Holmes, or Alexander.

Hey Bleed........While I dont play fantasy any longer, I did play alot in the late 80's & early 90's when it was at its infancy. Everyone has too much of the same info now and it is too easily available. I did very good (won $6000 in my first league, $900 entry fee) because I was up all Saturday night, calling the San Francisco Chronicle, Atlanta Constitution etc. to keep abreast of the latest breaking news on my players. I had a pretty long distance phone bill, but not much was available on puters then and there was only one or two Fantasy mags. I did my homework when others didn't. Now, it is too easy to get info, even if U R lazy. It was tough but fun and it paid off. I hope you are enjoying it.
As mentioned, it is impossible to adequately assess your pick without a rundown of the scoring system..........but, all being said & done, almost every great team that I have seen has a stud for a QB. That position can literally carry your team under most scoring syatems. I remember one year we started out with an expensive Dan Marino (in his glory years) at QB and were getting stuck for RB. The league gave some extra points for receiving, so we just went with 3 receiving type RB's (Keith Byers & Roger Craig, I think) and gave away rushing yardage usually, but always won QB & Receiving points. We won the league that way.
So, I lean towards Manning and you should be able to pick up his back up really cheap also.
I am surmising that you aren't going to pick #11 but the second round will go in reverse and you will get # 20. If you get #11, I would definitely go Manning as the drop off afer the top QB tier is steep. A decent RB will be there for sure at 11, just do your homework on who to take..........preferably one from a good team expecting to burn some clock in the later stages of the games. Just chalk up the expensive Ahman Green as last year's mistake as he is much too injury prone to take that high. While worthwhile, my guess is that he may even be available for your #2 RB this year.
Keep your pre season peepers open on RB Julius Jones, he'll be there a bit later on. He performed excelently last season when he played.
If you go stud RB first, chances a Brett Favre will be available later. He always plays, has nice targets, in Driver & Walker, averages over 500 tosses per year and GB defense is shaky which should keep him throwing late in most games.

15 is a lotta players to have to start, which makes input from us even harder to give. We went with only 7(with backups) when I played.
Best of luck to you & your season. Keep us posted on who you choose.

It would be tough to say without your scoring system. If you don't take a back they all will be gone when it comes back yo you. If I had the #1 I might try to trade down to move up in the early rounds. I traded # 5,15 and 40 for 10,11 and 33. I think any of the top four or five backs could all put up big numbers. Last year I picked 10,11 and took Moss and Owens. In my league you have to fill your starting lineup before you can draft a backup. So I went counter flow finished 1st overall but lost the super bowl.

Theres not a lot of good running backs so i would take a RB first

Priest Holmes
Tomlinson
Shaun Alexander

Those 3 are the tops i think

Would also throw in Tiki Barber i think he catches a lot of passes along with his rushing yards

Tomlinson for sure, don't take Manning unless the rules favor taking a qb that high. :scared
