As much as Derek Jeter apparently wanted to play last night despite a jammed right thumb suffered on Saturday, Joe Torre never wavered in his decision to rest him.

General manager Brian Cashman said Jeter "fought him on it," and Torre said half-jokingly it took him three trips into the trainer's room to deliver Jeter the news. Jeter did not make himself available to reporters before the game, spending most of the pregame hours in the trainer's room.

The injury clearly bothered Jeter in Sunday's game in Chicago, as he was seen shaking his right hand while in the field and on the basepaths before getting it wrapped.

Jeter refused to discuss the injury after Sunday's game, and said yesterday through a spokesman only that he jammed it during the Yankees' 5-0 win Saturday.

Cashman said they believe Jeter's thumb wasn't serious enough to undergo any tests yesterday.

Trainer's room

Tom Gordon was unavailable to the Yankees last night and he could be out for a few days because of a urinary tract infection. Torre said the amount of time that Gordon will miss this week depends on how well the righthander reacts to antibiotics.

Waiver talk

Cashman does not expect to make a trade through the waiver wire before the Aug. 31 deadline, describing the pool of available players as "slim pickings." He added that several teams were aggressively blocking players, and did not deny the Yankees were also doing some blocking.

Extra bases

Ruben Sierra (left hamstring) took batting practice with the team . . . Chien-Ming Wang (right shoulder) throws his next batting practice session tomorrow in Tampa and is still being looked at as a starter, Cashman said. Kevin Brown (back) is rehabbing at home in Macon, Ga., with his physical therapist, Cashman added ... As first reported by the Post and New York Times, Jason Giambi's personal trainer, Bobby Alejo, is leaving him to become strength coach at UC-Santa Barbara.

Tweaking rotation/Houston

Tweaking rotation/Houston

Locked in a tight race for the National League wild card, Astros manager Phil Garner will skip lefthander Wandy Rodriguez at least twice in the rotation so that Andy Pettitte , Roy Oswalt and Roger Clemens can start on regular rest Friday, Saturday and Sunday against the host Dodgers.

Because the Astros are scheduled to have Thursday and Monday off, Garner has the luxury of skipping Rodriguez and having his other four starters pitch on their customary four days of rest.

Righthander Ezequiel Astacio will start Wednesday against the Padres. Rodriguez started Saturday, so he was the odd man out instead of Astacio because Garner wasn't going to start Rodriguez on short rest Wednesday.

"He falls right on the off day," Garner said of Rodriguez. "And we're going with Pettitte, Oswalt, and Clemens. I'll be able to use him out of the bullpen."
