Jason Vargas is a 22-year-old southpaw from Long Beach State that
has seen some success in the dawn of his career (4-2, +140, 3.16 ERA).
He got a somewhat rude awakening at Wrigley in his last start, giving up
5 ER in 5 IP, but he still came out a winner because Glendon Rusch
was just a little bit worse. Vargas has had the luxury of facing some
teams with relatively quiet bats (Dodgers, Padres, DBacks) and will
get a true test against the lefty mashing Cards (16-5, +$975 on road).
He has also had a tough time going deep into games and durability
is an issue for the youngster. St. Louis continues to win, having
prevailed in 8 of the last 12 games. They will look to avenge a tough
loss last night in which they blew the lead on a 2-run line-drive triple
that should have been caught by Larry Walker.
