Jackson Blasts Bush Over Katrina Aid
Sep 02 3:48 PM US/Eastern

By DOUG SIMPSON
Associated Press Writer

BATON ROUGE, La.

Racism is partly to blame for the deadly aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, calling President Bush's response to the disaster "incompetent."

"Today, as the President comes to Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi for his ceremonial trip to look at the victims of the devastation, he would do well to have a plan more significant than a ceremonial tour," Jackson said Friday.

"His whole response is unacceptable."

Bush has acknowledged that the federal response has not been acceptable, but promised that the government would get supplies to survivors and crack down on violence in New Orleans.

Jackson questioned why Bush has not named blacks to top positions in the federal response to the disaster, particularly when the majority of victims remaining stranded in New Orleans are black: "How can blacks be locked out of the leadership, and trapped in the suffering?"

"It is that lack of sensitivity and compassion that represents a kind of incompetence."

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russell Honore, head of the military task force overseeing operations in the three states, is black. His task force is providing search and rescue, medical help and sending supplies to the three states in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Jackson was in Baton Rouge to take part in a local project using a caravan of buses to pick up people stranded in New Orleans and transport them out. He spoke at a news conference at the state emergency center.

The civil rights leader said the flooding that caused thousands to be trapped inside the city was caused by a lack of federal funding for its levee system and hurricane planning. The resulting tragedy, he said, has largely hit New Orleans' black residents, because they were too poor to evacuate before the storm hit.

"There's a historical indifference to the pain of poor people and black people" in this country, he said.

Jackson also said the news media has "criminalized the people of New Orleans" by focusing on violence in the city.

It's calling them as you see them Jesse.(Would use a better phrase for this but it would come across as racist at this time. Get it?)

The criminals have committed criminal acts which BTW have been caught on tv. The problem may be that there are thousands of them.

Nothing like Jesse to take a stand with fellow criminals.

Guess he found a spot with enough cameras for his liking. Days after the event.

I have to defend Bush against the charges of racism in this case.

He showed no more incompetence than he does on other matters here.

i wrote this in the general discussion forum....

i just heard that the federal gov't. can't give help to a state until that state requests it......

we don't know when the governor of louisiana requested help.

imo, the blame should sit directly on the governor's
desk.......he/she should have ordered the state troopers & the national guard of louisiana immediately for law enforcement. and marshall law should be declared...immediately.

i have no problem with people looting grocery stores for food.

my problem is with the looters who i have seen running down the street holding tv's & other similar items.

i have a problem with people stealing weapons, shooting at the police & the firemen just doing their jobs.

i have a problem with thugs raping wqomen & children & stealing from innocent people......these people imo, don't deserve any type of sympathy & should be executed, if caught in the action right on the spot.

Marshall law was declared on tuesday evening for the 1st time since 1942 shortly after Pearl Harbor the state of Hawaii declared Marshall Law . I am with ya AR182 those people are disgusting and by all rights its only been since Tuesday that the Government could have begun to respond to N.O. being that before that the Mayor was saying they were spared from the brunt of the storm and people could return on Tuesday . 3 days is not to bad based on the largest mobilization of National guard troops ever for our home soil !

Palehose, we aren't talking about the 'Marshall plan' here, we're talking about 'martial' law.

On that note, it's in Louisiana's constitution that martial law can not be implemented. The mayor did not know this, apparently. No real point, but just for your info.

Also, your 'style' of adding a space after a sentence before the punctuation is annoying. I'm sure you didn't know that it's not common grammar, but now you do.

Also, in the other thread from yesterday, I never saw your answer as to how deposing a secular Dictator and putting in an Islamic government, reduces the influence of Islam. Thanks.

BREAKING NEWS ~ Martial law declared in New Orleans as levees break, waters rise
Bernard Hibbitts at 11:52 AM ET

[JURIST] New Orleans CBS affiliate WWL-TV is reporting that martial law [Wikipedia backgrounder] has been declared in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish after levee breaks caused major flooding in the city Tuesday morning, sending waves of water through the downtown and French Quarter. Mayor Ray Nagin is estimating that 80% of the city has been flooded. WWL-TV provides continuing updates on its Katrina Blog.

Martial law was declared in New Orleans, not the entire state.

NEW ORLEANS, LA, United States (UPI) -- Martial law was declared in New Orleans midday Tuesday as the city continued flooding from at least two levees damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

WWL-TV, New Orleans, which evacuated its studios earlier, reported airlifts of sandbags had been ordered as water flooded along the city`s landmark Canal Street. No one but emergency personnel was being allowed into the city, whose two airports were under water. Looting was reported.

Mayor Ray Nagin said bodies have been seen floating in floodwaters, although neither city nor Louisiana state officials had issued a preliminary death toll.

Nagin said the city`s Twin Span Bridge is "totally destroyed" and that 80 percent of the city is underwater. New Orleans is 6 feet below sea level, and reliant on levees to hold back water from Lake Ponchartrain.

He also predicted there would be no electricity in the city for four to six weeks. Natural gas leaks were also reported throughout the city, CNN reported.

Ohhh, ok. So you see that it really *is* 'martial.' What did you say before, me wrong once again? Have you been right even once about anything?

Anyways, yes, it was declared and of course I saw it. Like I said above, the mayor obviously didn't know that he couldn't declare martial law under Louisiana's constitution. The news people didn't know either and neither did anybody else. It was pointed out the next day and that was that.

I agree. I think Bush is the worst president in recent history, but he's not racist. There's no point going there at all.

Who the hell cares what color anybody is - just get the help going!

Jesse has the right to speak - he has the right to criticize Bush. But right now ....where's that Penn Gillete STFU link?

http://stfu.eikern.net/?name=Jesse Jackson

...That's all I gotta say to Jesse.

Ok, not a neo-cons blog. But as mentioned before, definitely just as moronic as you.

If I would have read that, I would have chuckled. You use it as a source.

What's up with grammar and my sig? Should I put a period at the end? CUZ I'LL DO IT!
