Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks
From correspondents in New Orleans
05sep05

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Mr Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch. :help:

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup. :mj07: :mj07: :mj07:

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, :jerkit: including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?" (What, NO makeup artist?)

From what they said off my local radio, he went down there with a film crew and picked a bad dingy to go film himself saving the children of New Orleans.

Was he wanting to help or wanting publicity???Odd they had "on scene" cameras--believe monetary donation would have been MUCH more resourceful than a dingy .

Might follow Greg Normans example--he donated his helicopter-pilot and fuel for 30 days--off course if you won't find that in any celeb news.;)

He was there for a book or a magazine story that he was doing(I forget which). I wouldn't exactly call him a hero.

It seems that a cash donation would have been a better and more efficient plan. But that wouldn't have garnered much publicity.

I hope Sean Penn gets beaten and dragged through the streets of Hollywood just like they did to Mussolini
