Does anybody here know if it would it be ok to install a 155,000 btu furnace in a house that calls for 125,000 or would this be over sizing ?

thanks,
Vinnie

Hey Vinnie,
Iam a builder and not an HVAC guy, so bear with me. My understanding is if you do this and over size your furnance you run the risk of the furnace either "cycling" to much or too little. Basically what I was told is that the bigger furnace tends to run to short of a period, because it is heating the house up quicker, and thus is turning on and off more. Now the reason this is bad, Iam foggy on, but maybe our esteemed colleaques can help us out. This was something I was told by a heating contractor, maybe 4-5 years ago, so I might be all wet :)

That's is my understanding too was just wondering if the 30,000 extra would be consider over sizing ? I'm trying to help my father out with a job but being 1400 miles away doesn't help. Thanks for the response hopefully some here will know for sure.

There more to it then just the BTU output. Is an 80+ furnace or 90+ ? It's about 20% over-sized so the blower(fan) might also be over-sized? Then you get to the a/c unit. The proper size coils might not mount on the furnace so do you buy a larger a/c unit? That will be your next problem. Is it a new house or is he this a replacement. Short cycling is bad for the unit and make it less efficient. Been doing HVAC for 20 years but, not on residential units. If you want get my e-mail and I would be glad to help you.

The house is old steam heat no air will be added just the gas for heat.

The guy doing the work for my father had this one in his shop and said he would install it for the same price he got on a 125,000 btu

I was told by someone that the extra 30,000 wouldn't be over sized and may even be better.

Just was trying to get some opinions from those who know.

Lots of ????????? now. Going for steam to forced air is a big change? Their is no duct work if you put in the duct work why won't you put in central air? I need more info or you have trust the guy or not.

Ok just talk to my buddy who know more about boiler then me. Boiler are size by the radiator they feed. If you over size a boiler it will cycle more, take in more water and be less efficent. He ask why can't they size the boiler the same? It's the the pay me know or later factor. If you save on the installation it my cost you more to run.
