anyone fall for the media hype---

As of yesterday total bodies recovered 280.

Anyone want to venture a guess what New Orleans mortality rate per year is from homicides or aides???

from the grapevine--

Monday, September 12, 2005

By Brit Hume

Now some fresh pickings from the Hurricane Grapevine:

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (search) greeted President Bush when he arrived in Louisiana last night, and was at his side as he fielded questions on the Katrina relief efforts this morning. That quality time with the president, however, marks the mayor's first visit to the disaster area since Wednesday when Nagin pulled up stakes and moved his family to Dallas. The Dallas Morning News reports that Nagin has already bought a house in the city, and enrolled his daughter in school.

When the Mayor appeared on "Meet the Press" on Sunday from Dallas, he was never asked about his presence there, or his decision to move his family.

No Correction from the Times

The New York Times continues to stand by TV columnist Alessandra Stanley's (search) claim that FOX correspondent Geraldo Rivera "nudged an Air Force rescue worker out of the way so his camera crew could tape him as he helped lift an older woman in a wheelchair to safety," even though the video shows no such thing.

Times executive editor Bill Keller tells The Washington Post, "It was a semi-close call, in that the video does not literally show how Mr. Rivera insinuated himself... Whether Mr. Rivera gently edged the airman out of the way with an elbow (literally 'nudged'), or told him to step aside, or threw a body block, or just barged into an opening -- it's hard to tell, since it happened just off-camera." Keller adds, "Frankly, given Mr. Rivera's behavior since Ms. Stanley's review appeared ... Ms. Stanley would have been justified in assuming brute force."

Contract Connections?

Reuters reports that companies with a web of connections to the Bush administration are winning the first contracts to rebuild New Orleans. The story notes that the Shaw Group (search) of Baton Rouge, which has been awarded $200 million in clean-up contracts, employs former Bush campaign manager and FEMA director Joe Allbaugh (search) to provide "general business consulting."

The Shaw Group's founder and CEO is J.M. Bernhard of Baton Rouge, Louisiana who is the chairman of the Louisiana Democratic Party and was co-chairman Governor Kathleen Blanco's transition committee, a fact left out of the Reuters story.

Media hype? Are they not supposed to report that Nagin and the Republican senator from LA both said that the toll COULD BE 10,000? Should they just have ignored that?

Also, what is Nagin supposed to do, keep his family in New Orleans? Funny.

It was quite a staggering number to blindly throw out as the Mayor did in this circumstance but perhaps the guy just panicked or he thought with a higher estimate of deaths he could speed up the response that was so slow.

Nothing would surprise me about Geraldo, he craves attention.

DTB, your fooling yourself if you do not believe that contractors with connections to Bush and Cheney will not get the vast majority of contracts for katrina. I am sure this is what would happen with most administrations but with this ones handling of the contracts in Iraq it is almost comical.

MC I think I said quite the opposite in other thread---
"don't know how bidding goes IO--and tough to sort out from liberal media per below--but would say most in power will help their own if possible"

Matt-- Fox and most others guilty as well--you'll notice I did not say "liberal" media on this one---was an astounding exaggeration--but maybe in this case was for the best as I'm sure it had impact on contributions.

Smurph --I would have expected more from you.

My point is with the mayor--jessie and others claiming racism ect and they fail to mention that the chance of dying in largest natuaral disaster of all times is no greater than spending life on the street in any given year in N.O..--homicide rate (the highest in the nation) 192 thru Aug of this year--Would think the prudent person who really was concerned would work on something they had contol over and equally fatal.

10,000....????

I'd have to see that happen before I could believe an estimate like that...

If the total is 10K then I'll take the under....

Didn't first reports on 9/11 claim a probable death toll of 20,000-30,000?

I believe the first number was 40K, based on scientific observations and calculations.

Death sells newspapers (and TV audience).

god bless death.

when i saw the 2nd tower fall, i remember thinking there must be at least 25,000 dead. i guess people have an amazing ability to avoid death in the crucial seconds. survival instincts et al.

For entire area now over 500 is that correct. Mayor did get lots of attention with that number. If that was his reason it worked.

you are correct, charles. bush has only killed a fraction of the number of blacks that he has been accused of by the liberal left.

Bush was slow on the trigger. Number of deaths has nothing to do with it. Stop your crying Manson. Even Bush admits it was slow.

smurph didn`t want 10k dead...we all know that....

but,the media did....and so did politicos like nagin....when they thought they had the political high ground.....when he and blanco utterly whiffed..

now the worm has turned a bit....

nagin is proving to be a buffoon...

here are the real questions...

why didn't louisiana follow it's emergency plan? and why isn't anyone(code for the media) talking about this?

1) why hasn't anyone mentioned that a pre-requisite for a federal response BY LAW is that state law is executed and the emergency plan is executed FIRST?

2) why did the governor abandon the city of new orleans for the safety of baton rouge, BEFORE the plan was executed? ...leave the city...but do your job before you cut and run...don`t leave your constituents in the lurch...

3) why, when the federal government was acting in accordance with the stafford act, did the state of louisiana, by its governor`s acts, delay making requests when being told this storm was going to hit?

4) why did mayor nagin or governor blanco, delay while sleeping on it saturday night, the mandatory evacuation spelled out in the louisiana emergency plan? ....saturday the mayor said he may order an evacuation tomorrow. (sunday)

5) where were the parish presidents who were signatories to the louisiana emergency plan, and why did they fail in its execution to the plan?

6) in the parish failure to implement, why didn't the state take over as required by the plan?

7) why weren't the hospitals, nursing homes, etc. evacuated since the plan required them to do so?

8) why did the mandatory evacuation only occur AFTER president bush called, and why did governor blanco stress that it was only after president bush called to urge the evacuation order?.....was she concerned for the citizens, or was she grandstanding so she could blame the president if the storm didn't hit?

9) why were the action plan implementations required not done by the local and state government?

as for upgrading the levees....this has been needed for 40 years....through multiple admininistrations....maybe,take some of the federal money granted and use it to upgrade...rather than build bike paths on top of the outdated levees....lol

and anybody that uses the racecard in this tragedy to move forth their own political agenda,is basically scum... the most absurd, baseless accusation that i think i`ve ever heard...

this is sharpton,jackson,fahrakan stuff...an embarrassment...

Again...do not accuse me of the shit you pull constantly....you are a LIBERAL HYPOCRITE. Ferdville's post proved it. Thanks :)

Stop crying Manson. Of those 20 odd posts no one has challenged anything in them. You tried on one but I showed you the General of the National Guard agrees with me. So please, your crying is unbecoming and personally I am afraid Ferd will take offense to it.
