If your starter is spinning but not engaging flywheel you may have teeth broken on flywheel and starter gears are in that spot- push car a few feet with it in gear and try it? Just had flywheel replaced in mine for same prob--if that is prob-- buy a used one and take it to shop with you.Found used one for mine for $90 delivered.

Trying to push start the car won't apply to an automatic trans... he will just end up w/ bigger problems. If the engine is cranking but not starting then its most likely a fuel or spark problem.
It's probably a faulty starter armature ( the end of the starter the gear part) If you know anything removing a starter then you could save yourself a little bit of money by just buying the starter armature but it would be easier just to replace the starter.
Didn't know engine was cranking--sorry--being automatic wouldn't have made diff on pushing to move flywheel a few inches if that had been your prob.Would have only had to push it few feet by hand.
