I live here in the New York City suburbs (Greenwich, Connecticut)
Let me tell you.......I don't know if this is true in other parts of the country, but the New York media's so-called "experts" are the WORST handicappers.
In fact, they define the word "squares."
I have two buddies who religously FADE the plays of two NY sources.
The first is the New York Post. Eleven (experts....LOL) give their picks ats in Sunday's newspaper every week. So, my buddy just goes anti-consensus, even if it is just 6-5.
He has been doing it for 10-12 years now, placing $500 on every game, and he is WAY up. Almost all of the sportswriters are well below .500 at the end of every year.
I finally jumped on yesterday and they were 4-10 this week! (so, 10-4 for fading them). Last week, they were 4-12! (12-4 for us fading them)
I was at a softball tournament Sunday morning, so I didn't have time to post. Let me know if you want them in the future.
Secondly, a very close friend of my father's listens religously each Friday to these 2 AWFUL announcers on the NY sports radio station 660-WFAN. These two guys are classic "know-it-alls!".
Their names are Mike Francesa and Chris Russo and their afternoon drive show is called "Mike and the Mad Dog."
Not only are these guys stuck on themselves, but they ALWAYS have opinions and predictions.
Anyway, my dad's friend has made a fortune by going against these guys. They define the word "pompous" and they think they know everything about sports.
Well, they give 3-4 college and NFL football picks each week, and they STINK! Then, they get back on the air on Monday and go over their picks and say things like "Wow. What an upset!" or "Who woulda saw that coming?"
They truly think that if they are wrong, then the game was a "shocker!"
LOL
Anyway, FADE them big time!!
Believe me...I know their is a lot of anti-NY sentiment around the country, and I see why. (I really didn't see it until I went away to college at Indiana University in the '90s). But, back home for 10 years now, I have grown to hate "new" Yankees fans (even though I am a diehard Yankees fan...lol). I also can't stand the talking heads on New York sports radio. They overrreact to everything and they think their opinion is gospel!
I love the city of New York, but its media and vast majority of fans are such squares (especially when it comes to picking games against the spread.)
It seems everyone around here has an opinion, and it is usually the wrong one.
Also, college sports are NOT big in this area, and it drives me crazy because so few people like college sports around here like I do. So, when they try to pick NCAA games, they SUCK! They couldn't name one player of the college team they are betting on!
Typical situation...the guys I play softball with. They all take favorites and follow the "NY media experts' plays. No wonder why they pay the bookie every week! They don't even follow college sports but they play the "big" NCAA games each week, and usually lose because they listen to these New York "hot shots" on the radio and in the newspapers.
But the NFL, forget it. They don't think underdogs can win games just because they are on the right-hand column of the point spread in the newspapers! They have lost before they even call the bookmaker.
Honestly, If I was not a school teacher, I would open my own bookmaking shop around here. These guys are the worst!
