been a terrific first three weeks. been seeing the games really well. looking forward to more of the same as conference play opens up.

added play at bottom of thread

some mac notes:

eastern michigan gained 18 yards on a pass from matt bohnet to aj bennett on their very first play from scrimmage against michigan.... and then they proceeded to absolutely nothing for the rest of the game. this is an emu offense that was top 10 in the nation last year in total offense, and they were held to 10 first downs and just 134 total yards against michigan ... on the bright side for emu, they open up mac play against central michigan, and last years game was an absolute shootout -- a 61-58 quadruple overtime game that saw a combined 1,000 of offense ... central michigan's offense, which put up 569 yards of offense and 38 points against miami 2 weeks ago, was held to just 172 yards against penn state. quarterback kent smith, who torched miami for 356 yards passing and 122 yards rushing, was held well in check by psu, and the lions sacked him 8 times ... central michigan had a solid defensive showing against indiana in the season opener, but have gotten torched since then, giving up 524 yards to miami and 519 yards to penn state ... toledo cruised to a 42-17 win over temple, jumping out to a 28-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter and then coasting the rest of the way. quarterback bruce gradkowski broke the all-time toledo record for passing yardage and completions early on in the temple game ... while the competition has been mediocre to this point, the rockets have outscored the opposition 48-0 in the first quarter this season, and have jumped out to leads of 62-0, 35-0, and 28-0 before their opponents put points on the board ... trinity dawson got most of the carries for toledo last week. amstutz has been using a 3-back rotation early on this year with trinity dawson, richard davis, and jalen parmele. eventually, scooter mcdougle will join that mix ... western michigan beat southern illinois 34-28 last week. to many, that doesnt mean much, but that win wasnt a gimmie for the broncos, as southern illinois was ranked #1 in the nation in 1-AA heading into last week and were averaging 70.0 ppg in their first two games. on paper, the salukis might even be a better team than wmu's next foe -- the temple owls ... some good news for western michigan -- they finally got a chance to play with all their offensive weapons on the field at the same time. over the first two weeks, they were without starting quarterback ryan cubit for one game, starting tight end tony scheffler for one game, and starting running back trovon riley for two games ... after opening the season with two road losses to big 10 foes, northern illinois got a well-deserved cupcake win on saturday when they routed tennessee tech 42-3 ... after three weeks, garrett wolfe has rushed 62 times for 454 yards ... aj harris has been just as solid through 3 games, rushing 23 times for 182 yards ... northern illinois quarterback phil horvath was a bit of a question mark before the season. he was so-so in split duty last year with josh haldi. but now that its "his" team, horvath has been really sharp up to this point -- 52/78 passing (67 completions) for 701 and 5 touchdowns. hes thrown one interception in each of niu's first three games, but thats about the worst thing you can say about the way hes played ... ball state was smashed 63-3 by auburn. they actually gained 220 yards, which normally isnt the case when a team gets beaten so badly. but it was never a game. auburn led 35-0 at halftime and just methodically smoked bsu

bowling green was off last week to prepare for boise state on wednesday ... buffalo played one of their best games in the last year and a half but still managed to lose 17-3. to their credit, they actually looked like a decent college football team. the offense moved the ball well, and the defense was solid throughout. after generating just 260 yards and 12 first downs in the first two weeks combined, the bulls put up 349 yards and 21 first downs against rutgers. quarterback stewart sampsel probably bought himself some more time as the starter once he gets back from injury because he played a good game against rutgers-- a respectable 15/26 for 140 yards, and he also ran the ball well when he was flushed out of the pocket as well as on some designed runs. he rushed 11 times for 44 yards. true freshman drew willy also saw some action, completing 10/15 passes for 88 yards ... miami running back brandon murphy was the big story in the redhawks 27-10 win over kent. after losing their top 2 backs to graduation (smith and clemens), miami desperately needed murphy to step up and aggressively claim the running back position. he had two pretty good games against ohio state and central michigan, but he really busted out against kent, rushing 31 times for 172 yards and a touchdown ... for kent state, the rushing woes continued -- just 31 yards on 16 carries ... kent quarterback michael machen was 31/56 for 338 yards against miami. through 3 games, machen has already thrown the ball 150 times, and thats not gonna change, at least for now, because kent is going up against a strong rushing defense in ohio this weekend ... its tough to project what kind of offensive production we'll see from ohio university this weekend. personnel-wise, theyre not very good. theyve only scored one offensive touchdown in three games. but theyve played far and away the toughest schedule of any mac team heading into conference play (northwestern, pittsburgh, and virginia tech) so they might show some signs of life now that they wont be so overmatched, but theres good reason to remain skeptical about their offense ... akron quarterback luke getsy was 23/43 for 319 yards and 2 touchdowns against middle tennessee, but he threw 3 interceptions. through two games, though, he has performed much better than expected. talent isnt an issue with him (he transferred from pitt) but he had a poor fall camp and since he would be working behind a young offensive line, there was reason to believe that akron could really struggle to move the ball early on but that hasnt been the case at all. the zips have put up 385 yards (against purdue) and 421 yards (against middle tennessee) in the first two weeks ... dominek hixon had a big game for akron last week -- 9 catches for 169 yards and a touchdown. he was the mac special teams player of the week for week 1 as well.

On the bright side for emu, they open up mac play against central michigan, and last years game was an absolute shootout -- a 61-58 quadruple overtime game that saw a combined 1,000 of offense ...

central michigan's offense, which put up 569 yards of offense and 38 points against miami 2 weeks ago, was held to just 172 yards against penn state.

quarterback kent smith, who torched miami for 356 yards passing and 122 yards rushing, was held well in check by psu, and the lions sacked him 8 times ...

central michigan had a solid defensive showing against indiana in the season opener, but have gotten torched since then, giving up 524 yards to miami and 519 yards to penn state ...

kent quarterback michael machen was 31/56 for 338 yards against miami. through 3 games, machen has already thrown the ball 150 times, and thats not gonna change, at least for now, because kent is going up against a strong rushing defense in ohio this weekend ...

its tough to project what kind of offensive production we'll see from ohio university this weekend.

personnel-wise, theyre not very good.

theyve only scored one offensive touchdown in three games.

but theyve played far and away the toughest schedule of any mac team heading into conference play (northwestern, pittsburgh, and virginia tech) so they might show some signs of life now that they wont be so overmatched, but theres good reason to remain skeptical about their offense ...

yeah, thank much Buddy.

I enjoy your MAC notes gman, but the way you format them makes me wanna take a nap after i am done.

What's your take on the BGSU v. Boise game?

I know QB Zabransky has looked erratic to start the season but in many ways he's still learning the job as he came from a run-option O in high school. His decision-making leaves a lot to be desired at tiiimes. If HC Hawkins and OC Petersen loosen the leash on him, ie. let him use his mobility - the Boise O will start to hum again.

I had the displeasure of watching the Rutgers v. Buffalo game last SAt. If I had been foolish enuff to place any coin on the Scarlet-letter Knights - "R" as in retarded - I wouldv'e gone ballistic. UB D looked okay and their O moved the ball some dirivng deep into RU's territroy only to faile to manufacture any pts.

Buddy is a godsend! I think I have the name of my first born.

G-man send down the breakdown on Bowling Green / Boise State.

Gotta think this is a value for those taking Bowling Green.

Dont like the fact that this is BG's 3 game in row on the road.

Boise State is a hard place to play, But I LOVE watching games there. SMURF TURF!

Even with those two things, I still dont think Zabransky's support is what it has been. He shootin 50 % from behind the scrimmage line. That isn't good when you throw the ball 26 times a game.

I know that BS's opponents have been on the brawny side of tough, but 50% com'on! 300 yds. 3 TD's and 4 INT's. At this rate Z-man wont even get 2000 yds this year.

Is this the game he breaks out? Probably. BG gave up 8.4 Yards per pass against Balless State. And that was without seven starters on Balless State. Thats right in Z-mans range and he will probably get that 1st 300 yd game of the season.

The problem is he wont have any help in the backfield. I believe BS needs the run to setup the pass and BG doesnt. I have seen both BS games, and the running backs might as well have watched it with me. The 2 backs were neither a threat or a concern either game. When yardage had to be gained the backs couldn't do it. The leading back got 1/4 of his yards (28 / 120) on one run this year.

Bowling Green should outscore them, Omar Jacobs wants his name out there as the next Ben Rothliesburger (Best QB in the country but nobody talks about) So I think they keep pushing the offensive envelope.

Even though the O/U is 77, I still think it has value. Neither team has shown they can stop another offense. I also think the Money Line on BG is a decent odds bet. But that just my opinion.
If you got any facts to dispute, let us know.

GL to ALL, especially myself.

Last year Z-man was 73 yards shy of 3000 yds passing, 63% completion rate, a 92.9 QB rating, and that was his second year to learn the Offense. I would say that he pretty much knows it by now. Also he was sacked 28 times last year. But wierd stat, even those his numbers this year suck, he has been sacked only once, and his QB rating is a whopping 55.8.!! I can't even make up an excuse for these number differences.

buc/weasel/et al -- thanks fellas. definitely put a lot of work in to getting them together. but if they help guys out, thats what its all about.

hm/intheblue -- its gonna take a herculean effort from the boise secondary to stop jacobs. what hes done in a year and a half of college football is just sick. a lot of people might try and discredit his numbers but he torched wisconsin in week one and the badgers have given up just 3 points on defense since then. but i cant back bowling green on the road with the way theyre playing against the run. everybody knows that wisky's calhoun had a monster day against bg. but a pathetic ball state team ran the ball effectively on the bg defensive front, and thats cause for a lot of concern. but bg is so good on offense that they can make up for their defensive deficiencies. bowling green is tempting but ive got to pass on the side in this game. zabransky should find his rhythm again in this game and even though bg is an explosive underdog, just cant wager on either side in this one.

a few notes on the bowling green side. not sure if bowling green will be using alternating kickers for this week or how brandon is going to work it, but coaches were unhappy with the kicking game in the first two weeks. timchenko was/is a new kicker for them this year and hes already missed 3 extra points in two games. so over the last week in practice, theyve re-opened the kicking competition to try and get someone to step up and be consistent. brandon hinted that he will likely pass up any field goal attempts beyond 'medium range' and keep his offense on the field on 4th down.

also, pj pope left the wisconsin game with an injury and missed the ball state game in week 2, but he is expected to play tonight and be close to 100% after the 10-day layoff in preparation for this game. absolute worst case scenario is that bj lane gets the majority of the carries and thats not a bad thing considering how much experience he has. but pope should be ready to go tonight and be a big part of the bg offense.

western michigan / temple over 60.5

make no mistake about it -- temple is not a good football team. but theyre also not the worst team in division 1-A. there arent many teams in the country that could salvage a .500 season with the owls schedule. theyre not completely devoid of talent, they are just overmatched against the level of competition on their schedule most weeks.

but this isnt one of those weeks. temple should have no problems moving the ball against a western michigan that not only is young, but has been decimated by injuries early on this season. wmu is now without starting linebackers darrell copeland and paul tifhof (who was hurt last weekend). theyre starting a handful of redshirt and true freshmen on defense now. from a scheduling standpoint, theyre really lucky because theyre injuries come at a time when they have a three-week stretch where they play temple, ball state, and buffalo. but that doesnt mean temple wont score points on them even if its in a losing effort. theyre certainly not playing in front of a big crowd, but the owls offense was definitely better in their home opener against toledo last week (almost 400 yds of offense) ....and wmu's defense is nowhere near as good as toledo's. the wmu defense should be a welcome sight for temple after their gauntlet of games against arizona state-wisky-toledo.

but the x-factor is the western michigan offense. after some early-season injuries and suspensions to some of the best players in their program, the broncos finally got everyone back and healthy last week. quarterback ryan cubit missed the virginia game with shin splints that were bothering him all camp, all-mac tight end tony scheffler missed the toledo game after getting hurt in week one, and starting running back trovon riley was suspended for the first two games of the season. what happened once they got everyone back? 34 points, 440 yards of offense, 262 yards and 3 passing TDS from cubit, and 156 yards on 30 carries for riley in his first action of the year last week. dont dismiss the numbers because they were against southern illinois. the salukis were one of the top 3 teams in 1-AA before last week. the broncos have one of the most underrated offenses in the mac and could really surprise some people if their defense ever came to play. wmu definitely has some offensive weapons, they just dont have a defense to go along with it.

this is a tough game to call as far as the side goes. wmu hasnt beaten a 1-A team in a year and a half. but theyve got a lot of talent. temple has played a murderous schedule to this point and knows this is their best chance to win a game all season... but its still temple.

but forget trying to figure out a side in this game. wmu can score points, but cant stop anybody. temple moved the ball well against toledo last week and is gonna be "up" for this winnable game. someone is scoring 35+ pts here imo. and the other team wont be far behind.

Gman, props to your fast start this year in the MAC. Do you have a take on the Akron/NIll game? Akron has started 2-0 ATS and put up some numbers on a respected Purdue D returning most of their starters, and won at MTSU last week, but I question the quality of that win since the Raiders had a key injury to one of their main playmakers in the NT game. NT then got rolled by Tulsa last week. Meanwhile, N Ill moved the ball well v. Michigan, and were a 2 point conversion away from beating NW at NW. Can't make much of last weeks hammering over the Techsters, other than they dominated the game statistically except for time of possession. All this leads me to believe that the Huskies should have too much balance on offense with Wolfe, Harris, & Horvath for Akron to keep up with. I know you think Getsey is decent, but do you think No. Ill. is worthy of the road chalk in the Rubber Bowl? Got to believe they are eager to get off to a strong MAC start after starting 0-2 with the two tough Big 10 road losses. Appreciate any opinion you have to offer. Keep up the good work, it is much appreciated! :thumb:

danny:

the northern illinois line came out much higher than i anticipated when i was going through my stuff on sunday night. i thought it would be a 3.5 or 4 point spread. this is an intriguing game, and probably the best mac game of the weekend. my initial "lean" before i saw the lines was to northern illinois, but the more i looked at this game, the more i just decided to leave it alone and watch how it plays out. theres no way akron is going to stop wolfe and harris. akron has never been able to stop niu's running game over the years and thats not going to suddenly change. my concern with northern illinois is not on the offensive side of the ball at all. its their defense that has me reluctant to lay the 6.5/7 points. i dont fear akron's running game, but the zips have some playmakers at receiver that i think niu could struggle with. and, to my own surprise, getsy has been much better than expected to this point. really, it comes down to being willing to lay a TD on the road with a team whose offense is fantastic but whose defense will always keep you on the edge of your seat. i dont think northern is in jeopardy of being upset, but i fear this could be one of those games where they lead by 4-11 points the entire way, but akron might always be one drive away from jamming you with a backdoor. wouldnt surprise me to see wolfe go off for a 200-yd day on the ground, but just not real thrilled with laying road points with a defense thats still trying to find an identity.

Thanks for the reply, Gman. I am hoping that N Ill is really motivated to ram it down the Zips throats on Saturday. Wish you felt strongly about them, but I am already invested -6.5. Best of luck with the Temple over.

perhaps youll find this interesting or useful. like i said, my first inclination was to back northern, but i think there might be better spots to make money on the huskies down the road. i know youre locked in with your bet, so heres hoping you hit it. gl this weekend.

=======

Northern Illinois covering all angles for MAC opener
By Bobby Narang - Staff Writer

AKRON, Ohio - Northern Illinois coach Joe Novak wanted his team to get a detailed scouting report on Akron.

Novak informed the Huskies the Zips had seven starters returning on defense.

He mentioned that Akron ranked second in total defense and sixth in passing yards in the Mid-American Conference.

The 10th-year Huskie coach also blurted out the Zips' 6-1 mark in their last seven games at the Rubber Bowl.

Also, Novak talked in length about Akron's wide receivers. Domenik Hixon ranks first in the country in total yardage (214.0 ypg), seventh in receiving (124.0 ypg) and 12th in receptions (7.5 cpg). Hixon racked up 221 all-purpose yards in Akron's 49-24 loss at Purdue.

Wide receiver Jason Montgomery's name surely came up. Montgomery caught three touchdown passes against the Boilermakers.

Novak talked in length about Akron's new starting quarterback, Luke Getsy. The Pittsburgh transfer has filled Charlie Frye's shoes to date, as the Zips average 340.5 passing yards per game. All Frye did was set 54 school records.

Novak made sure not to leave any details out of the picture. He even talked about the facilities at the Rubber Bowl.

"I'm sure during its day it was a really nice facility," Novak said. "Right now, it's really decrepit and run down. It's really depressing, but that might be too strong. It's not a pretty place. The locker room is old, dirty and dingy. I made the kids aware of that ahead of time so they're not surprised or shocked."

Novak's candid assessment wasn't meant as a knock on the Zips, but instead he wanted to leave no stone unturned in NIU's quest for a MAC championship.

The Huskies have beaten four BCS teams in three years, but remain sans a conference title since 1983.

"That was our goal 10 years ago and we've been close, but we haven't done it," Novak said. "We've beaten some people and done a lot of things, but we haven't won a MAC championship. The players make our team goals and that was the only one they picked. They want to be in Detroit on Dec. 1. That's their goal, get to Detroit."

The road to Motown starts today in Akron.

The first conference game signals the start of an eight-game quest for the Huskies. The Huskies own the second-best overall record in the MAC since 2000 (40-21). Toledo, the main roadblock in NIU's path to Detroit, leads the league with a 49-16 record.

The Zips won't be a pushover after playing their first two games on the road. Under second-year coach J.D. Brookhart, the 2004 MAC Coach of the Year, the Zips don't come close to matching NIU's balanced offensive attack.

Akron ranks 109th nationally in rushing yards (62.5 ypg), and have yet to score a rushing touchdown. Last week, the Huskies had four tailbacks with 50 or more rushing yards.

"The run game was a bit frustrating," Brookhart said. "We are very happy with the passing game and the way they are able to move the ball."

The Huskies face a Akron team dominated by youth. The 100-player Akron roster features 43 true or redshirt freshmen. The Zips do have an experienced secondary, but even Michigan and Northwestern couldn't stop NIU's prolific offense.

Quarterback Phil Horvath has the offense running like a well-oiled Ferrari, as the Huskies rank ninth nationally in total offense (513.7 ypg). Northern Illinois leads the conference and stand 12th nationally in rushing (264.3 ypg).

Novak broke down the reason for the success of NIU's offense.

"(Former NIU quarterback) Josh Haldi is an extremely intelligent kid, but he would zero in on P.J. Fleck and zero in on Dan Sheldon," Novak said. "It's like Garrett (Wolfe). There's a difference between Garrett and A.J. (Harris). Garrett sees the whole field when he runs. A.J. is a little bit tunnel. In A.J.'s first year, he would run right up the back of his blocker.

"Garrett sees everything and Phil's that way as a quarterback. He knows his reads, but he sees the whole field. We're really spreading the ball around much better than we ever have. He's got a great feel for what we're trying to do. He's the best technical quarterback that we've ever had by far. Phil's got the tools to spread it around and he's using them all."

The yards could pile up on both sides, not much different than the last time the two teams met at the Rubber Bowl. The Huskies won a 52-35 shootout in 2000.

An intriguing angle will be the turnover margin and penalties. The Huskies (109th) and Zips (104th) rank near the bottom in turnover margin. Novak also doesn't want a repeat of last week's 13 penalties for 140 yards.

"We can't turn the ball over and make penalties at this rate," Novak said. "If we want to win the MAC, we have to limit mistakes and that starts at Akron."
