Been following this a long time especially in China and South Korean press. As I said I am not going to jump on band wagon just yet till I see some action. I do think this has very positive chances because of one key element--China is really the big player in this.I will give this administration credit only for sticking to their guns and not surrendering to the bilateral talks and agreements NK was hoping for.Had we went that route (as Kerry -Kennedy-Hilliary ect suggested)we would be exactly where we were in last administration--with Kim laughing all the way to bank. This time around China is really the big boy in this negotiation and they do not take it lightly when someone defaults on deal they made and they are definately in proximity to verify and and can collapse NK in matter of months if they so desire. What has my curiousity up is how we got them to lay the law down--somehow I believe we must have made some under the table arrangements regarding Taiwan. While it is no secret NK with nukes is more of threat to China than U.S. --NK has always been useful as trump card in Taiwan negotions--something went down--not just sure what.

Off my local radio, talking heads were acting like "this was easy" and "why didn't it happen 5 years ago". I would definitely agree with you. There's more behind the curtain in this one. Doesn't even seem like a big story anywhere I look, even during this lull in the news (hurricane and war weary) right now. Almost as if the world is "hoping" the intentions are sincere from both sides.

Wayne,

It's interesting that you are 'impressed' with this administration in their attempt to get our relations with North Korea simply back to where it was before W shot off his mouth.

Economic aid? Verification? Inspectors? Man, this sounds awfully familiar to the stuff that you STILL continually bash Clinton about.

Wayne,

A couple key differnces Matt. 1st is the type of aid and circumstances of how they they get it. You have one administration footing thier bills so they can use their resouces to build nuke arseanal--You have this admin trying to negotiate "AFTER" they have them. Do you not consider a country with no nukes entirely different matter than one without.
What leverage did NK have in Clintons admin--what did they have after. Then you need to re-read fact of sticking to 6 way talks to include China--quite a diff situation when they have to be verifiable to 6 countries vs the word between two serial liars.(Bill and Kim) ;)
Kim has found out the diff between GW and Bill if you haven't.
I am sure you are aware Kim had the nukes before GW "shot off his mouth" only because Bill looked the other way once again.
There are only 2 things to consider--One is already established--Bill alowed NK to deveop Nukes with aid of American tax payors dollars.
The next is will GW succeed in undoing the collossal fck up.Certainly not a done deal yet--and won't happen without China applying the scews.

Well it's nice that *they* agree that it's binding. The only problem is that North Korea is already stepping away from it, saying that there is no deal if we don't build them the light-water reactors that they were promised back in 1994.

Figured as much Matt. I like GW sticking to his guns on the 6 way but agree with you all his barking will have little effect on outcome--China is the key player here.I really think they will apply the screws as they do like to be embarrassed.
