I know I ask this question to a country the RE -elected Bush, but I just saw a story on the news this morning that the Coast Guard had to rescue a PREGNANT woman and her FOUR YEAR OLD from the path of Rita.

WTF? Were you really not paying attention to what happened with Katrina, or are you really that stupid?

Only thing I can figure is there was a meth lab in the basement or something like that.

Idiots

I think you'll find things go much smoother in general in this one.
-Appears the local and state are MUCH more on top of it.
-cities NOT below sea level
-general population appears to be more on top of it as element of "poverty" far less.

How many of these hit Fla every year--and how many have reprucusions of N.O.--are they and texas ran by diff federal gov??

Sure, but can you also see the huge difference in how the federal government is treating this one?

Katrina- 2 days AFTER the levees broke and 3 days after Southern Mississippi was completely destroyed, Bush was giving speeches in California comparing Iraq to WW2. No real command and control center for about 10 days after the storm.

Rita- 1 day BEFORE the storm he's sitting with and observing a huge military command center. (Northcom)

Good point Kosar. It's sickening to really think about the fact that the only reason the prez is so visible at this point, and handling this storm differently, is because of what happened in N.O. It's basic PR work. But the events don't even the score...yuo can't trump a majpr flub with some speeches and clever media outreaches.

No doubt, Biatch. There are some that refuse to believe that the federal government played any role in the New Orleans debacle. This despite the fact that the president himself said that the federal response was unacceptable. And we know that that doesn't come easy for him.

I like the story about the official in NO that was supposed to distribute food & supplies to people after Katrina, and other officials found he had hidden FOUR TRUCKLOADS of water, food and tools at his house... WTF?

New Orleans has a history of being corrupt to the EXTREME, so it does not surprise me to hear about an offiicial taking the food/water for himself. Yes, its a mess down there and the Feds were dragging their feet on helping, BUT it was a hurricane, so go blame Mother Nature or the invisible God that you happen to believe in, these people were warned and told to get out, they chose to stay, and then they shoot at the helicopters coming to help them and steal TVs and radios. Looting for food and water, thats survival, but electronics??? where the hell are you going with that? Don't get me wrong, it is a disgrace that this happened in the U.S., but look at the people down there looting just because they can, its almost comical the way some people think.

What does location of pres have to do with anything?

They all knew hurricane was coming in advance--GW unprecedantly
declared N.O. disaster area before it ever hit.

Appears to me Fla and now Texas have plans that they implement pretty thouroughly--on the the other hand you have N.O. that is twenty ft below sea level and they can't don't have adaquate levees and as back up and they were aware over half their pumps DON"T WORK. If I lived in that city I knows whose ass I'd be after.

I agree that most of the blame in NO lies at the local and state level. But please, there was no urgency from the feds either. W hadn't even commented of the f'ing thing while NO was filling up with water. That's wonderful that he declared LA a state of emergency beforehand, but he must have forgot about the event shortly thereafter.

Regardless of who screwed up the evacuation, planning, etc, it does not send a very encouraging message to see your president making speeches in Cali, seemingly oblivious to what's going on, while 2000 people are stranded on an overpass with no food or water for up to 4 days and God knows what was happening to the people in the Superdome.

In contrast, for this one, he was at Northcom in Colorado Springs observing the rescue/recovery efforts.

You say it makes no difference where he is?

Every head you acn imagine would be on the chopblock including untouchable "W" himself if the weren't 150% prepared this time around. I'm surprised they didn't give out the winning lottery number to anyone near where this storm was heading.

You can't balme them in all honestly though, fool me once, shame on, uh, your not gonna fool me again.

Yep What about all those that hit before the one in N.O.---Seems to me in the 24 hour non stop coverage prior to this one hitting all the interviews were with gov-mayors and local law inforcement on what THEY were doing in prepartion. --and on aftermath--where's all the looters--hell I can understand everyone being interviewed so far--believe everyone has at least an 8th grade education and here I thought anyone in poverty level was not eligible to complete school--was destinted for criminal activivity--thought poverty is what caused illegitamacy or could it be the other way around? Funny we have Amish people here who have no machinery-electricity ect what most would deem ultra poverty--yet "0" crime-"0" illegitamcy-all speak fluently--when catastrophe hits they help one another--not rape and pilliage or burn their own neighbor hood. Now someone explain to me why?

The "hood" in N.O. has been going downhill for generations...and had got to the point where the police wouldnt even go there. All they would do is go pick up bodies in the morning...
Drug heads and dealers were the MAINSTREAM, not the exception, because they were simply stupid uneducated crack heads..

Storm comes along, and then they all get a FREE RIDE OUT THE GHETTO, so now its time to steal whatever you can so hopefully you can turn it around for some crack or something.....when you leave a problem festering for GENERATIONS...not days, weeks or even years....

IT DONT CURE ITSELF OVERNIGHT...and like I mentioned before, God Bless all those REFUGEE centers as THESE ARE THE PEOPLE YOU ARE HOUSING. The ones that EXPECT help, not the ones who APPRECIATE IT. These people have free housing, free schooling, Medicare, and everything else they may need to take care of themselves and their slew of kids (the more kids you get, the more dough the state gives you).

The Amish were looking to build their own communities and make them flourish by educating themselves and trying to raise families that can make a difference. The HOOD just wants some bling bling, cuz "DAY NEEDZ HELP !!!"
