Tampa Bay(-3) over Green Bay (1 Biscuit)
- - The many folks that have called Green Bay a bad/average and soft football team during the last three, two or one seasons (during which the Packers won division titles) may finally be right. Nevertheless, I suspect those same folks are liable to underestimate the traits of player development, resilience, chemistry, and leadership from the top on down, that has made Green Bay the winningest franchise in the era of free agency . . . BUT, looking at this week, QB Brett Favre struggles with pressure up the middle, which Tampa can bring, and the Packers new look OL has yet to deal with effectively. The Green Bay receivers are not getting separation and the offense as a whole is treading water. IMO, no head coach or coordinator in the league understands and knows how to exploit Favre's penchants and weaknesses better than Jon Gruden . . . . I think the Green Bay defense has almost been a pleasant surprise, repeatedly forcing favorable 3rd down situations, holding on 3rd down, and getting off the field, but with little help from the offense (time, points and/or field position), an average (no turnovers forced) and still developing unit has not been given the help it needs. I'm reserving judgment, but IMO, Green Bay will play its guts out and lose a game before I'll be able to get a measure of whether this team has the chemistry and resilence I've grown accustomed to enjoying . . . A case can be made that the undefeated Buccs are ripe to be knocked off, but I think Chucky gets the scalp he seeks in this one.
Pittsburgh(-3) over New England (1*)
- - "We need to do everything better", is the self-assessment pervading the Patriots organization. On top of a tepid exhibition season, for 120 minutes the Champs have looked fairly and increasingly vulnerable; I don't see a team primed and poised to set the tempo and assert their incredible identity in this trip to Pittsburgh against a riled up bunch of Steelers.
Chicago(+3)(-118) over Cincinnati (1*)
- - Both teams have done me well in the early going . . . Cincinnati is a nice team, HC Marvin Lewis has been doing a good job, and a historic season for the franchise would not shock me, but the reality is I think they're due to be knocked down a peg if they happen upon a hungry team operating under the radar . . . The Bears' defense is healthy, energized, exceptional, quiet and hungry, and the rest of the team is well-positioned to complement their lead. I see a live dog here.
