I think folks were telling us it cant be done. The stories of moving less then 25 miles in 15 hours should give us a clue. Cars left idling and running out of gas should tell us it's not that easy to just say pack up and go. Might be they need to tell folks in areas that may flood to go first. Then if there is time, start with others. With problems they had. I hate to see if more of Houston would have tried to get out. This time they got lucky path Storm took. If you can call what happen luck. But if it had went in 50 miles lower sounds like hell would have been times two.

HMMM....so djv, you think they should knock door to door in lowest elevations and say *you guys should leave NOW , but don't tell anyone else or the highway will be clogged*?? and as soon as you guys are out, we will start knocking door to door on someone a foot higher in elevation that you are.

don't you see anything wrong with thqt picture..... no matter who you try to get out *first* the interstates are gonna bottleneck!!!

Well then if you cant get them out first those at greatest risk. Your right were in deep chit. But that is how they practice it. At least they found away to get more out this time then three weeks ago. They let them take there pets. But it is true. When dealing with a very large population you can't move them all in 60 hours. But I would hope those who live there. Know who should get going first. I guess not knowing like over 50 years ago. You just didn't know what hit you till it did. Just think if they didn't have this new fancy radar and tracking ability as we do now. Hell news stations would have had little to do for 48 hours.

you hit the nail right on the head with one of your comments djv, and it was one of the things *learned* on New Orleans. this time they allowed pets to go, and a higher percentage was willing to go because of that...... should only take about 50 more *practices* before it is perfect. :( (wanna know how many more years i hope that takes) ?

there IS no perfection in these situations... you try and get as many people as you can out safely.

lets see, the *bitch* with N. O. was that they didn't do anything to provide the *poor* with a way out (even tho some say they did and they refused to leave).....now in TX, they bus people out of nursing homes for what turned out to be unnecessarily and they fvucking die in a bus explosion...... what do you do?????? you do the best you can, or what you think at the moment is FOR the best..... face it, it can turn into a LOSE, LOSE situation. it sucks NOW, and it always will, cuz there isn't a way to ever make it work for everyone.

There is a way but you would need two weeks to do it. Ok these 8 blocks you leave now. Ok there gone now. Next 8 blocks your turn. Almost like the buffet at a wedding. This table first then next. Easy with just 200 people.

yup, damn easy with 200 people, but with 1.5 million, how do you stop those that are NOT suppoed to be going *now* from GOING *now* and causing the same bottlenecks?? hell, they have drivers licences too, and pay taxes to be driving on the same highways...... when the smart people think it is time to go, they will GO, (the idiots and criminals will continue to stay behind) now if you would kindly explain to me how it is possibe to have 2 weeks notice for evacuation in a hurricaine, maybe i will understand.

you were one of the major whiners of how it took SOOOOO long to help N.O. when N.O. didn't even request help until 2 days after the fact, and TX learned from THEIR *practice run* and requested federal aid the day BEFORE the eye was due to hit.

somehow this all still seems to fit in with the practic makes perfect theory just like the *accepting evac. of pets* does.

It was a joke. Start moving them out before we even know there is a storm. We can do it. We have computers.

exactly djv...... and since you know you were making a joke, you also must know it is a joke to be able to instantly react to such disasters... your choice... if you are a religous person, blame God, if you aren't, blame your wife for using aerosol hairspray destroying the ozone and contributing to global warming and worse hurricaines!!!

hard to place a blame, isn't it?? just as it is hard to say who is responsible for handling things wrong. Maybe 100 more disasters we would become perfect at predicting them in enough time before they happened, but we all know that we don't want it to come down to 100 more disasters to get in the practice that we need. the *blame game* by different levels of the gov't is BS, but so is the populations *blame game* pointed towards the gov't for something that has never been experienced at this level before.

you think your taxes and gas prices (and taxes on them) are high now....wait till the public starts demanding a specific plan for every single person/community in the US in case of every single possible disaster that could strike them....

(ok, time to go to bed and make up for the sleep that Bet Royal robbed me of this morning) ;)

Blame? I don't care how or who they blame. But I just don't want the government to keep telling us how safe they made us with billions of our money. They have not. Thats a joke to. And I believe your right. If I catch your drift. There is not enough money to ever do that. But they can look organized. So they may be learning. N Or looked like 1st grade. At least this time it looked like 8th. Thats a start.

"But I just don't want the government to keep telling us how safe they made us with billions of our money."

Thats the problem--those that take responsibilty on their own generally make out ok--those that depend on the gov to take care of em better stand in line--and those with cars idling and running out of gas--the gov needs to inform them if they shut off engine when stopped they won't run out of gas ;)

what do you do when the heat index is well over 100 with a carload of people and pets and you have no water and you are on an asphalt frying pan

turning off that ignition doesnt sound so simple huh?

What do I do?? 1st don't think I'd leave without full tank of gas or water--but lets say for sake of arguement I did.
I got family and pets in car with no water and only enough gas to reach my destination. Heat index over 100 and get stalled in traffic. I have 2 choices run out of gas in comfort and face hurricane--roll down windows, turn off car-suffer discomfort of heat and get out of dodge--I'll take the heat vs the hurricane--of course I play golf in 100 heat by choice--but not through many hurricanes ;)

I live in Houston and evacuated to Austin on Wednesday afetrnoon at 3:00. It took me six hours to make a trip that usually takes three. I heard stories of the same trip taking up to 12 hours later that night and the following day. I returned on Sunday evening and it took me only 3 1/2 hours.

The bottom line is that you are not going to be able to move nearly 2 million people out of a city overnight. I actually believe that our local officials did an outstanding job considering the decision of an overwhelming number of citizens to leave.

Sure there were problems and I am certain that it would have been worse if everyone had not been so aware of what had just taken place to our neighbors in Louisiana. Gas shortages were a problem but I am not sure how you can plan for that many filling their tanks at the same time.

Personally, I have no complaints.
