A very interesting, tough game here. I live near Minneapolis and pay close attention to the Gophers. This IS a big lull game for them, and historically under Mason they have come out flat after a big win. Last week's win was HUGE for Mason and the program, and they have been talking some about the tough schedule, Michigan on deck, etc.
Ranked road favorite against an unranked home dog angle - who is undefeated and VERY motivated. Always a strong angle to play against.
Mason is one of 3 or 4 coaches to have beaten Paterno 4 times. If he wins today, he will be the only one to do it 5 times- not a big deal for capping purposes, but he seems to have a good plan against Joe Pa, evidently.
Minnesota really seems to be responding well to the new defensive coordinator. They are actually HITTING people this year, and came up big last week against a team that usually KILLS them offensively. Very impressed with that, and could offset the great young talent Penn State has at receiver a bit.
I think the number is about right, really. Normally, I would immediately go against the Gophers for the traditional reasons I outlined above. I am not sold on Cupito as a game manager, and he still makes some TERRIBLE decisions and throws. But he grew up some last week and make continue to grow. Hard to say.
It's a dangerous spot for the Gophers. But these Gophers seem to be a little bit better in key areas that past Mason teams, in ways that help in a hostile environment.
There are some rambling thoughts. I will probably stay away from this game, as I scored BIG with last week's win based on the unranked home fav angle - like we have today in reverse - for Minnesota.
I think they are a very good team, and can control the game with Maroney (and his backup is terrific, too). But this one should be close, in Happy Valley. Good luck to you if you play it.
