The Army Black Knights will try for their first victory of the season when they host the Connecticut Huskies in a non-conference tilt this Saturday at Michie Stadium. The Black Knights are coming off their best performance of the season, unfortunately for them it was a 28-21 setback to 23rd-ranked Iowa State. Army opened its 2005 campaign with a 44-7 setback to 21st-ranked Boston College then followed that with a tough 20-10 loss to Baylor at West Point. A victory this Saturday for Army would snap an eight- game losing skid which dates back to October of last year. After the Black Knights clash with UConn, they will host Central Michigan before hitting the road for two straight games against TCU and Akron. As for the Huskies, they are coming off their bye week, but before getting a week of rest they suffered their first loss of the year to the 25th ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 28-13. Connecticut was spectacular in its first two contests of the season, defeating Buffalo 38-0 and Liberty 59-0. After battling the Black Knights, the Huskies will open their Big East schedule at home against Syracuse. This will be the fourth meeting between Army and Connecticut. The Huskies have won the last two meetings, including an impressive 40-3 victory last season in Connecticut.
After scoring an impressive 97 points in their first two games, the Huskies' offense came across a strong Georgia Tech defense that held UConn to just a 196 total yards. The Huskies collected just 67 yards through the air which is likely the reason why the squad recorded just six first downs, while converting just 3-of-17 third down attempts. UConn was able to manage 129 yards on 33 attempts in the setback. Terry Caulley led the way with 83 yards on 14 carries, while fellow tailback Cornell Brockington mustered just 16 yards on three totes. Matt Bonislawski was horrendous under center, connecting on 7-of-25 throws, for a meager 67 yards with no scores and three interceptions, one which went for a touchdown. Despite the poor offensive showing, the Huskies are still averaging 265 ypg on the ground and 36.7 ppg.
Defensively, UConn has been one of the better units in the nation, holding opponents to just 9.3 ppg. The Huskies permitted 307 total yards in the loss to Georgia Tech on 84 offensive plays by the Yellow Jackets. UConn allowed Tech to collect 23 first downs, but was extremely effective on third-down attempts, allowing the Yellow Jackets to convert just 3-of-16 attempts. The Huskies allowed 165 yards on the ground and as a result, Tech was able to keep possession of the ball for just over 34 minutes. Connecticut recorded just two sacks in the tilt and was unable to collect any turnovers. The pass defense was particularly impressive, as it limited Georgia Tech to just 142 yards on 11-of-30 passing. Danny Lansanah paced the Huskies with nine tackles and 2.5 TFLs, while James Hargrave also contributed nine stops. On the season, Lansanah leads the Huskies with 22 tackles and 5.5 TFLs.
Army's offense, which has been abysmal this season, had its best performance of the year against 23rd-ranked Iowa State. The Black Knights mustered 132 yards rushing on 47 attempts and entered the Cyclones red zone three times, converting for touchdowns all three appearances. Carlton Jones had a strong performance for Army, rushing for 122 yards. Zac Dahman continues to show signs of inconsistency, but he was able to complete 19-of-33 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing two interceptions. His inconsistent play is one of the main reasons the Black Knights are just averaging just 12.6 ppg. Dahman has now thrown six interceptions and is completing only 53.9 percent of his passes. Jones has been able to rush for 273 yards, but is averaging just 3.2 ypc and has yet to find the end zone this season. Despite all the problems with Army's offense, it is still converting a respectable 40 percent of its third-down attempts.
Coming into the season the Black Knights' defense was suppose to be improved, but that has not been the case thus far. They are instead surrendering 30.7 ppg and 130.7 ypg on the ground. The Black Knights have already allowed seven rushing touchdowns and has equally struggled trying to stop opposing aerial attacks, giving up 217.3 ypg through the air. Army had its best performance by far against the Cyclones' offense, holding ISU to just 229 total yards. The Black Knights allowed just 71 yards on 32 carries (2.2 ypc) and just 158 yards through the air. Barrett Scruggs paced the Knights with 10 tackles and also forced a fumble. Scruggs now has 17 tackles on the season, but the leader of this unit is no doubt Cason Shrode, who is leading the team in tackles with 25 stops. Caleb Campbell is right behind him with 23 tackles, while leading Army with two interceptions.
