Starters out at receiver, running back
Duke will play at ninth-ranked Miami on Saturday without starting receivers Jomar Wright and Ronnie Elliott.
The Blue Devils' top three running backs are also injured and unlikely to play against the Hurricanes, who are favored by 35 points.
That means five of Duke's six receivers listed on the depth chart are true freshmen. And the starting running back could also be a true freshman.
"We never seem to be able to spread our injuries out at different positions," Duke coach Ted Roof said Monday.
The biggest loss could be Wright, a sophomore and the team's best deep threat, who is out for the season with an unspecified injury to his left knee. Roof said Monday it wasn't an ACL injury but Wright, who leads the Devils with 155 receiving yards, would require surgery.
Wright was carted off during the first half of Duke's 28-21 loss to Navy last Saturday. Elliott, a senior, missed the Navy game with a hand injury. Roof said Elliott is also out for Miami. His return is uncertain.
That leaves junior Deon Adams and five freshmen at receiver for the Miami game.
The running back situation is more unclear. Cedric Dargan and Justin Boyle both missed the fourth quarter vs. Navy with unspecified injuries. Roof said Dargan, Boyle and freshman Re'quan Boyette were doubtful for Saturday, leaving sophomore Ronnie Drummer and freshman Clifford Harris to share the carries.
