Here are some game notes...
In a rare Friday night game, the Connecticut Huskies and the Syracuse Orange will butt heads in a Big East battle from Rentschler in Storrs. Syracuse has not gotten off to the start that it anticipated, as the team is currently 1-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. The Orange have suffered back-to-back defeats since their only win of the season, a 31-0 thrashing of a poor Buffalo team. The most recent loss for the club occurred last weekend, a 38-14 setback at Florida State. Of the remaining seven games for Syracuse, including Friday's tilt, six will be played against conference opponents, as the lone exception is a late-season matchup with Notre Dame. As for Connecticut, it has won three of its four games thus far, including a 47-13 triumph over Army last time out. It must be pointed out, however, that all three of the team's wins have come against lackluster opponents. The lone quality team that the Huskies have faced thus far was Georgia Tech, and that game resulted in a 28-13 road setback. Syracuse posted a 45-30 decision over the Huskies last season in the only previous meeting between the two teams.
Syracuse didn't have much luck moving the ball and scoring points against Florida State last weekend, as the Orange finished the contest with only 12 first downs, 234 total yards and 14 points. Perry Patterson threw for a score and ran in another, and he finished with 189 passing yards. He was sacked seven times on the night by the relentless Florida State defense, and the 42 yards lost on those plays helped drop the Syracuse rushing total to 45 yards. Damien Rhodes posted 114 total yards for the Orange, as he was the leading rusher and receiver for his team in defeat. Through four games, Syracuse is averaging 19.0 ppg and 269.0 total ypg, poor numbers for a weak offensive team. Of the 10 touchdowns that the offense has scored, eight have come on the ground. Rhodes is off to a strong start, as he has racked up 405 rushing yards and five scores. He has also made a team-high 13 catches and is clearly the key to the offense's success. As for Patterson, he has connected on 54.9 percent of his throws for 585 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Syracuse surrendered five offensive touchdowns and 512 total yards to Florida State, as the defense was simply overmatched on the road. The Seminole quarterback finished with three passing touchdowns and one on the ground. Anthony Smith, Steve Gregory and Tanard Jackson all registered eight tackles in the loss. Opponents are averaging 20.0 ppg against Syracuse this season on the strength of 347.5 total ypg. The pass defense has proven to be extremely opportunistic with seven interceptions. With 10 sacks to date, the club has done a solid job of applying pressure. The Orange have struggled a bit against the run, as foes are racking up over 150 ypg on the ground. Kelvin Smith leads Syracuse with 29 total tackles, and Ryan LaCasse is responsible for six of the 10 sacks. Those two players are the keys to the success of this defensive unit.
Of the 47 points scored by Connecticut against Army, 33 can be credited to the offense. Matt Bonislawski was extremely efficient under center in the win, as he connected on 18-of-26 throws for 180 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Jason Williams was on the receiving end of both of the scoring strikes, and he finished with three catches for 38 yards. Tailback Terry Caulley was tremendous once again, as he ran for 87 yards, caught six passes and reached the end zone twice. UConn surrendered only one sack in the tilt and did not turn the ball over at all, overshadowing the fact that the club was just 4-of-15 on third-down conversion attempts. Offense has come easily for UConn, as it is averaging 39.2 ppg and 391.2 total ypg this season. Bonislawski has been solid in his first seasons as the starter, as he has connected on 57.4 percent of his throws for 585 yards with six touchdowns and four picks. Caulley has run for 341 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.8 ypc, and he should be considered one of the nation's premier runners.
UConn was strong defensively in the win over Army, as the club surrendered only 261 total yards on 82 offensive plays by the Black Knights. Army finished with 71 rushing yards on 40 attempts, and the fact that the Huskies posted five sacks totaling 37 yards in losses didn't hurt. UConn also came up with four interceptions and held Army to 19-of-42 passing. Of those four picks, two were returned for touchdowns. Jonathon Smith came up with nine tackles in the tilt, and James Hargrave posted seven stops. Opponents are only averaging 10.2 ppg and 213.5 total ypg against this UConn team that has exceeded expectations from a defensive standpoint. Foes are managing a mere 82.5 ypg on the ground on 2.2 ypc, and the pass defense has permitted opposing QBs to connect on fewer than 50 percent of their passes with one touchdown and five interceptions. The Huskies have already posted 14 sacks, and several different players have gotten to the quarterback at least once.
*Cuse is 1-11 ATS as a 7 point or less dog since 1992*
*The Huskies are 14-1 ATS after forcing 3 or more turnovers*(last game 4 against Army)
* I believe the Huskies are #2 in the nation in overall DEFENSE*
*Cuse is ranked #112th in the nation in offense*
*I look for the Huskies to steam roll this Cuse team without a problem.Let`s face it the good ole days are gone for this university when it comes down to being tough on the football field.
The Huskies will prevail in the national spot light under the lights in the friday night ESPN game.
It should be a convincing win when the final gun sounds.
No problem laying 7 in this spot.
