Yes I know MSNBC is biased towards the Dems so add up to 4-5 points for Bush onto the results but it still doesn't look good. Imagine how far ahead the Dem's would be if they actually united and had a message that the American people could buy into like the Contract with America from 94. Sort of surprised by the amount of people whom think DeLay and Frist are guilty, I personally feel that DeLay is more than likely guilty buy I am unsure of Frist as he seemed like a pretty good guy.

WASHINGTON - It has been weeks since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast; since gas prices began spiking to record highs; and since Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq, held her antiwar vigil outside President Bush?s Texas ranch. But, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, the fortunes of the Bush administration and the Republican Party have not yet begun to recover.

For the first time in the poll, Bush?s approval rating has sunk below 40 percent, while the percentage believing the country is heading in the right direction has dipped below 30 percent. In addition, a sizable plurality prefers a Democratic-controlled Congress, and just 29 percent think Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers is qualified to serve on the nation?s highest court.

"Any way you slice this data, I think these are just terrible sets of numbers," said Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

The poll shows that Bush?s approval rating stands at 39 percent, a new low for the president. In the last NBC/Wall Street Journal survey, which was released in mid-September, 40 percent approved of Bush?s job performance while 55 percent disapproved. In addition, just 28 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction, another all-time low in Bush?s presidency.

Strikingly, much has happened in the time between those two polls ? many of them seemingly positive events for the White House. The president delivered a prime-time speech from New Orleans, in which he promised to rebuild the Gulf Coast. He also made several more visits to the region, to examine the damage caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Furthermore, he saw the Senate confirm John Roberts to the Supreme Court, and he nominated Miers, his White House counsel, to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O?Connor.

?Huge question mark? on Miers
The Miers nomination, however, has disappointed some of the president?s conservative supporters, because they say she lacks judicial experience and a clear conservative record on social issues. According to the poll, 29 percent say she?s qualified to serve on the Supreme Court, while 24 percent think she?s unqualified. Forty-six percent say they don?t know enough about her.

"There is nothing to suggest that people have turned on her," Hart said. "But there is just a huge question mark behind her at this stage. She has to establish her own bona fides."

The poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points and which was conducted from Oct. 8-10 of 807 adults, also finds that strong majorities don?t believe that the recent charges against GOP leaders Tom DeLay of Texas and Bill Frist of Tennessee are politically motivated. Sixty-five percent say that DeLay?s indictment on charges of illegally using corporate contributions for political campaigns suggests potential illegal activity, while 24 percent say the indictment is politics as usual and has little merit. (Since his indictment, DeLay stepped down from his leadership position but still plays a prominent role in the U.S. House of Representatives.)

Meanwhile, 57 percent say Frist?s sale of stock in a company his family runs ? just before the value of the stock declined ? indicates potential illegal activity, compared with 28 percent who say the charge has little merit.

48 percent want Democratic-controlled Congress
In addition, with 13 months until the 2006 congressional elections, 48 percent say they prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress, compared with 39 percent who want the Republicans to control Capitol Hill. In fact, that nine-point difference is the largest margin between the parties in the 11 years the NBC/Journal poll has been tracking this question.

But Hart argues that Democrats aren?t necessarily responsible for this margin. "It is not that Democrats have done so well," he said. "It is that people are disgusted." McInturff puts it this way: "People are very turned off and unhappy with the state of play in American politics."

People also seem to be turned off and unhappy with high gas prices. According to the survey, 69 percent believe the worst is still to come with energy and fuel prices. Just 25 percent think the worst is behind us.

Because of this generally sour attitude, the NBC/Journal pollsters doubt that Bush will be able to climb out of his standing anytime soon. "His trampoline [is] made of cement," Hart said.

And while McInturff thinks that Bush?s approval rating actually may actually hover between 40 and 45 percent, he says that?s still problematic terrain from which to govern. "It is a very difficult place to be."

Those numbers are really bad. This is probably tough to answer, but what are the lowest approval rating numbers for any President?

just 28 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction
I think I saw this poll. I think slightly more than 50% answered "I don't know"

I'm not sure if that has any significance.

Meanwhile, 57 percent say Frist?s sale of stock in a company his family runs ? just before the value of the stock declined ? indicates potential illegal activity, compared with 28 percent who say the charge has little merit.

This is the type of poll that I don't think means squat. How many people polled actually understand the SEC guidelines on these types of transactions? I with you, MC, I'm not sure Frist did anything that was breaking the law.

"I think I saw this poll. I think slightly more than 50% answered "I don't know"

Got tired of answering these polls #'s as presented by media. 1st it depends on how question is asked 2nd it nots so much what they tell you but what they don't tell you--as above if 50% answered they didsn't know and 22% said no You could have headlines that said 72 % DON"T think country is head in WRONG direction---

In case you missed the ultra liberal spin with #'s posted last week I'll put it up again---:)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
the spin--"Given a choice in the survey, 42 percent favored cutting spending on Iraq to pay for relief efforts on the Gulf Coast, and 29 percent wanted to delay or cancel Republican tax cuts. That's a whopping 71 percent backing options that Bush doesn't even have on the table."

---Ive seen it all now-but this is the most deceiving ploy by liberal media yet and it amazes me how some bite on the OBVIOUS deceit.

I read above statement and conclude that less than half favor spending cuts in Iraq and less than a 1/3 want to cancel tax cuts--

---but THEY add them together and and post a majority with adjectives like whooping--and that all the cool aid crowd sees.

under these accounting methods the statement 119% don't favor spending on Iraq or tax cuts would be equally true--now what kind of "whopping" majority is more than every American.

Are these journalist THAT stupid or do they think the lemmings have IQ of a rock.

Yeah, the Republicans are in big trouble. Dems won't have Bush to kick around any more and the Dems will find someone like Gore or Kerry to get the American public excited. The next election will probably be the best chance the Dems will have in a long time to turn things in their direction. But if they continue to nominate the same old stories, they could very well blow this chance. Maybe they can resurrect Dukakis and McGovern to give Al Gore a push.

A thought: I agree that the Republicans are in big trouble, but it wasn't Bush that got them there. The poor guy can't wake up in the morning without some moron in his cabinet or party doing something stupid to reflect back on him. Even his own mother is a nitwit. In 01 he told University graduates that they too could be President with a C average. I and they thought that was class. They are now recruiting illegal aliens for the Military. When they run out of people who feel that $20,000 bonuses are not worth dying for, the war will be over. When the Pentagon is tired of repairing oil wells that are being blown up as quickly the war will be over. GW will sign the papers. He's got 2 more years to land on his feet and inspite of the bad company he keeps, he'll probably do it.

Here's another thought - even someone like Gore, Kerry, or another version of Dukakis would still win the election if the state of the nation does not improve. It's not like Bush blew out either Gore or Kerry. It wasn't a slam dunk just because they were perceived as being too liberal or whatever. More voters than ever would like just choose whoever would represent a change at this point. I bet if the last election was held this year Kerry would win this time. Bush is seen by too many as that much a failure now. Much moreso than a year ago.

Dukakis looked too much like a Republican. Beady eyes flat mouth designed for speaking out of both sides at the same time. Kerry is just totally creepy and Dean's meltdown may have finished him as a serious candidate. John McCain would probably run the table if he wasn't such a moral character.

Our credit card is just about empty. Bush listen to no one how to help clear it up. Just keeps piling it on our kids and grandkids. And he can stay the hell out of S/S. Im sure they can screw that up to. Like they just did Medicare.
Your right our troops deserve the best. Sounds like after two years they starting to get right equipment there. I hope it helps save lives.
