Laptop Recommendation

My computer crapped out last week, the motherboard got fried and looks like it is not worth replacing.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a laptop? I really don't need anything all that fancy, what I'm really looking for is something that is very realiable and won't break my wallet. If I can keep it in the $1000-$1200 range. Last one was a Dell, and while I liked the computer the customer service was non-existant. If you have anything you like let me know.

If you buy something through dell you should buy it through the small business section you get support here in the states.

Check out www.newegg.com for laptop specials, personally I would stay away from gateway, and make sure the laptop has wireless, since you can pick up wireless at almost any hotel now if you travel.

Numerous times on here I have pimped the Toshiba Satellite. I have had mine for over two years and just recently replaced the hard drive (though I think that is because of that damn "FREE" thread of Always Prayin), only problem I have ever had with it.

Functionaly the 17 inch widescreen display is unbeatable.

Hey Blackman,

How's it going buddy? I have a little advice I might want to give to you. I bought a Sony Vaio Laptop in 2001 and my father bought a Toshiba laptop in 2001. Anyway, I'll make it short - Igot mine for about 2K while he had a nicer model and bought it for about 3K. Mine works fine - have never had any problems with it at all. I have some of my friends remove the spyware every so often which is commonplace. Anyway, my father's laptop had thelcd screen burn out just last week and I'll probably give him mine in about a month or so and I will definitely be buying another Sony Vaio laptop because I think they are the top of the line. I just love these computers. Sony Vaio is the best computer you can buy and I will attest to that and I am in the market for a very nice one right now.

Good luck buddy,

Argh, Kneifl.... i've had 2 Vaio's, and have had big problems with both of them. (2nd one could have been *minor* problems, but got it at Sam's with no extended warranty so just ditched it and bought a new one)

Right now, we have one Compaq Presario, one Toshiba, and 2 E-Machines. It's a toss-up as to which is better between the e-machines and the toshiba... (of course MINE is the compaq, and it sucks the worst....LOL)

i would never again buy a laptop other than at best buy WITH the 3 year warranty. you ever priced a battery replacement for a laptop?? hell, you go in before the warranty expires and tell them your battery is holding a lousy charge and they send you an additional one.....that more than makes up for the price of the warranty in the first place :D

if you aren't in any kind of a hurry....... wait until the week after X-mas, and there are MANY choices at Best Buy with major rebate offers..... when i bought the kids and my dad all laptops last Christmas, they were all under at about $500 after rebates, and all 3 of them are far better than my compaq. (which was $1200) be patient, and you can find a good laptop at a GREAT DEAL these days.

BM,

My friends that work on these computers constantly with spyware problems etc. Say that Sony Vaio's have the least amount of problems. And I don't care what kind of computer you have if you don't run spybot and adaware constantly and have NO file sharing programs - that is the only way you won't get spyware. You'll get it from visiting simple websites as well. Sony Vaio is by far the best laptop on the market right now and I will argue with you about this until you are blue in the face so it's a no win situation for both of us. Sorry you had problems, I'm glad you had the warranty. My Sony Vaio has been ABSOLUTELY GREAT to me though so I've got to recommend it. Never had many problems at all, works perfectly, best investment I have ever made on a computer.

Glad you backed off on the Texans,

Too bad I was the sucker:(

i didn't *back off*... LOL, i just didn't have a way to bet on them and wanted to go to bed....now i'm too fired up knowing that next weekend i have real money to bet again :D

as far as my Vaio's, the main problem was shorts in the display... would be a very scribbled up screen (for lack of a better way to describe it) ... i'd have to press on the back of it to try and get a picture to come in, and when i did, had to hope that noone breathed anywhere close to it. sent the first one in twice for that problem, and it took forever for them to get it fixed (when easier problems are fixed in 2 days) If you remember Centre Ice, i finally gave my first Vaio to him when best buys opened up in Canada, cuz it had a 3rd problem (and warranties were transferrable)... with the BB warranties, 3 times for a repair and they give you a new puter. (yes, i would have kept it myself if it didn't need service again and i wasn't in a situation where i HAD to have a working computer in 2 days, so i just went out and bought a new one since it was hard telling how long it would take to get it back) That was a 2nd Vaio from Sam's Club that was history in about 14 months. Needless to say the next 4 laptops came from Best Buy!!!!! Sounds like you got your hands on a good one..... hope you never have a problem with it.

I bought my Sony Vaio about two years ago and had no problems yet. However; I have never had any other laptop so I can't really compare. I could have bought a TOSHIBA for the same price but I liked Sony Better. Bisides I gat a Sony digital camera so it's easy to download pics. No USB cables and shit like that just put the memory stick in and that's it.

Here I go again with COSTCO........ COCTCO has a 6 month return policy with all computers. So, what you can do is buy a laptop at one of the retail outlets, try it out for a few months and if your not happy with it simply take it back and try out another, they won't put you through the 3rd degree if you keep the box and receipt. I have done this and it does work. They carry all the brand names. I own the DELL 6000 which is amazing.

http://www.costco.com/Common/Search...h=laptops&cm_re=1-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search

Please note, as of November 4th, 2002 , the return policy for all desktop and notebook computers are six months from the date of purchase. Six months after purchase, all computer services and technical support will be subject to the applicable remaining manufacturer?s warranty.

I also had a Viao that went belly up after 2 years. I wouldn't buy another, and I don't want to argue the case with Kneifl "until I'm blue in the face" :) but the underlying theme in this thread is "BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTEE". It seems expensive at first , but if you ever need repairs you'll wish you had it.

I'm on a HP now that, so far, has been trouble free. I use it alot...around 6-7 hours a day_ more on Sundays during football.

Hate to say it, but go with an Apple...iBook or Powerbook. Much better product than any Dell, Gateway, etc., laptop.

my advice: don't buy new....if you don't need anything fancy, go to ebay and buy a used laptop...laptops are like cars, they lose value right away... granted you lose the warranty that other posters are advising you about, you can get a solid laptop for $500 or less....I use my laptop for the Office stuff and surfing the net, if that is what you need, ebay is the way to go

you can buy them new for that, too, once the after Christmas rebates go into effect.
