Exclusive: USC Slips ... Texas is No. 1 !!
October 19, 2005
By Ira Schoffel for MCSPOLL.com

Southern Cal might have preserved its unbeaten streak with a last-second victory Saturday at Notre Dame, but the Trojans are no longer the No. 1 team in the country, according to the Master Coaches Survey.

Citing concerns about the USC defense, which has allowed a total of 80 points in its past three games, the Master Coaches have moved Texas into the nation?s top spot and dropped Southern Cal to No. 2.

Though some Master Coaches have ranked Texas No. 1 on their individual ballots in previous weeks, this marks the first time that the Longhorns have garnered more than half the first-place votes.

Former Alabama and Texas A&M head coach Gene Stallings, who is one of the 16 Master Coaches, has been lobbying for Texas since nearly the start of the 2005 season.

?I?ve had Texas first for three weeks, and if they played, I think Texas would win the game,? Stallings said, noting that the Longhorns have played better defensively and have a dynamic quarterback in Vince Young.

Defense was the turning point for several of the Master Coaches.

Though USC has the nation?s top-rated offense ? averaging 613 yards of total offense per game ? the Trojans have been suspect on the other side of the ball. Texas, meanwhile, has been exceptional defensively.

The Longhorns, under first-year defensive coordinator Gene Chizik, are ranked No. 3 nationally in total defense, allowing 240 yards a game. Chizik, of course, was the architect of Auburn?s 2004 defense, which led the nation in total defense.

Southern Cal, meanwhile, is ranked 45th nationally in total defense, allowing 350 yards a game. And while Texas is tied for seventh in the nation in scoring defense (allowing 14.0 points per game), the Trojans are ranked 35th at 21.2 points per contest.

?I?m gonna vote for Texas this week because I think they have a better defense,? Master Coach George Welsh said. ?In games like that [against Texas], I don?t know if Southern Cal could score 35 points, which they might have to do.?

Texas is not only strong defensively, but the Longhorns also rank eighth nationally in total offense. While USC is No. 2 in scoring offense (48.67 points per game), Texas is right behind in fourth place at 45.67.

The Master Coaches Survey is a group of 16 Hall of Fame-caliber coaches, who review game films of every team they rank each week, discuss their evaluations on a weekly conference call and then vote independently.

Arguably Texas and Usc played their toughest game on the road with almost exactly the same results.

Texas was fotunate to beat Ohio State who could only settle for field goals when tds would have probably brought them a victory.

Usc was fortunate to get past the golden domers.

That is what great teams do ....they get the job done however it needs to get done.

With Usc's performance thus far against the more difficult SOS I would give them the edge at this point in the season.

Don't think Tech gives the Horns much of a test this week. Ucla will give Usc a good game at the end of the year.

In an unbeaten match-up for the National Championship I think we see a line of...

USC -7

Of course Scott knows more than Hall of Fame football coaches. Who woulda thunk it.

I explained why I think I know more. My post didn't just say they are wrong. I EXPLAINED why I think they are wrong with analysis supporting MY OPINION! My post clearly shows why their opinion is FLAWED and prob. bias against USC. That is what an intelligent person does! Backs up their opinion with analysis. I would easily tear these "Master Coaches" apart in a room. You on the other hand often don't support your opinion with analysis but love to comment on others opinions. Just look at your quote above. Why make a comment about me? Focus your attention on the subject, NOT me.

You wouldn't last 5 seconds in a room with Pat Dye, Gene Stallings, or Vince Dooley. Gimme a break! You actually think you know more about college football than 16 of the game's greatest coaches? :mj07: :mj07: :mj07:

Read post #1 in this thread, then read post #4. You will get your answer! I like my chances in a room with these "Master Coaches."

You and others might be afraid to challenge them. I am not. Bring it!

Sagarin also states that USC plays in the 5th best league in the country! Personally, I don't think Texas has the offensive firepower nor the defensive secondary to stay in the game with USC at the Rose Bowl. Texas has yet to play a team that remotely has mastered the forward pass, so the Tech game will reveal somewhat the Horn's secondaries strengths or weaknesses but it will not be a good comparison since USC stretches the field more than Tech. USC still has large question marks on their defense especially in the secondary but one has to wonder if Young has the passing ability to do the damage.

You are so tough on an internet post. You would crap your pants if you were put in a room alone with any of those guys. :scared

Those guys have more college football knowledge than you could ever hope to have. I know you are just upset with them for picking Texas over USC.

First of all!! you need to pray for a lose in any game of the Hookies, because no matter what Texas do, if Virginia Tech ends without a lose this season and win their conference Texas is going to be out of the National Championship, Big 12 is way toooooo weak this year and that will fukk TExas in the ass if this happens!!

Poor Vince is terrible - #4 passer in the nation. he didnt seem to have much trouble with OSU which is clearly superior on defense to USC. Has Texas' secondary been tested? Not really. But pretty much every so-called expert says they have 2 No 1 picks back there and either the top or second best secondary in the country. The issue in such a game will not be USC wideouts but to what extent Texas can contain Bush and White.

Wrong. I was worried about this until I saw what has come out lately on this question. Go read what the BCS "experts" are saying. texas will probably have to lose for VTech to pass them because the lead is so big in the human polls. In the Harris Poll only 4 out of 113 (I think that is the number) had VTech No 2 - Texas had more No 1 votes than that. I forget the math, but for VTech to pass either Texas will have to lose or there will have to be 4 unbeatens so that Texas could perhaps be low enough in the computers.

I think VaTech loses anyway. texas only real shot at a loss is this Saturday - and they are 17 point favorite.

I never once talked to Madjack about you. 2nd, look at my posts. Not once did they mention or refer to you. I only mentioned you AFTER you made a comment about ME! Like I said, talk about the subject, NOT ME! Very easy. Leave me out of it and you won't be talked about! That is a bash? Get some thicker skin!
