Southern Cal might have preserved its unbeaten streak with a last-second victory Saturday at Notre Dame, but the Trojans are no longer the No. 1 team in the country, according to the Master Coaches Survey.
Citing concerns about the USC defense, which has allowed a total of 80 points in its past three games, the Master Coaches have moved Texas into the nation?s top spot and dropped Southern Cal to No. 2.
Though some Master Coaches have ranked Texas No. 1 on their individual ballots in previous weeks, this marks the first time that the Longhorns have garnered more than half the first-place votes.
Former Alabama and Texas A&M head coach Gene Stallings, who is one of the 16 Master Coaches, has been lobbying for Texas since nearly the start of the 2005 season.
?I?ve had Texas first for three weeks, and if they played, I think Texas would win the game,? Stallings said, noting that the Longhorns have played better defensively and have a dynamic quarterback in Vince Young.
Defense was the turning point for several of the Master Coaches.
Though USC has the nation?s top-rated offense ? averaging 613 yards of total offense per game ? the Trojans have been suspect on the other side of the ball. Texas, meanwhile, has been exceptional defensively.
The Longhorns, under first-year defensive coordinator Gene Chizik, are ranked No. 3 nationally in total defense, allowing 240 yards a game. Chizik, of course, was the architect of Auburn?s 2004 defense, which led the nation in total defense.
Southern Cal, meanwhile, is ranked 45th nationally in total defense, allowing 350 yards a game. And while Texas is tied for seventh in the nation in scoring defense (allowing 14.0 points per game), the Trojans are ranked 35th at 21.2 points per contest.
?I?m gonna vote for Texas this week because I think they have a better defense,? Master Coach George Welsh said. ?In games like that [against Texas], I don?t know if Southern Cal could score 35 points, which they might have to do.?
Texas is not only strong defensively, but the Longhorns also rank eighth nationally in total offense. While USC is No. 2 in scoring offense (48.67 points per game), Texas is right behind in fourth place at 45.67.
The Master Coaches Survey is a group of 16 Hall of Fame-caliber coaches, who review game films of every team they rank each week, discuss their evaluations on a weekly conference call and then vote independently.
