will it impact the total? I thought I remember hearing the ball carries better if the roof is open, but don't know for sure. Any one have any insight?

Can't speak about Houston...but

At the Skydome aka Rogers Centre in Toronto it is generally true that the ball flies better with the roof open. This does not apply automatically to Houston of course, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Caution: if the roof is open, you can't say it's always better for the over, since it also depends on wind direction. With the roof open, a strong wind coming in from the outfield can knock down home run balls into fly ball outs.

ESPN radio has an ex-gm (former Mets gm I think) on the air for their morning show quite often. He said it doesn't really matter. The Stro's are basically bitching about nothing. Their roof open/closed record isn't truly indicative of their success. I guess the roof was open more often earlier in the season WHEN THEY SUCKED PERIOD so it may lend one to believe they do worse when it is open. I know they weren't scoring for shit back then. Clemens had an era under a run and a losing record. The rest of the home games it was probably closed more often than not, when they had a bit more success.

Hey IO Sox Fan

Hey IO Sox Fan

...you gotta stop drinkin so early, guy, you'll be absolutely hammered by gametime. This was a thread about the effect of an open roof on the total, not the side. :mj14:

Good luck on your Sox. Do you think it would just kill Cubs fans if the White Sox got a World Series before them? Or are they on the Sox wagon too? This game is it, do or die for the Stros. :)

Living in Houston, they always say it carries a little better. When the Home Run Derby was here last seaon, they had it because they said it carries better and it shows off the stadium better.

I don't think you should base your wager on it being open or closed.
This stadium is so small that wind doesn't matter that much.

Its absolute BS

MLB is way out of bounds controlling the roof

Home teams can mow the grass the way they want, mess with the mound, mess with the lines, but can't have the roof open all of a sudden?

Are we making rules up as we go??

Everything they can do with the umps or field conditions in the White Sox favor.

Its a joke.

You are right freeze. This one decision was so biased and out of bounds that after the series, I am done watching or going to Pro baseball.

The biggest issue with the roof id the weather as Astro pitchers lose the advantage they have developed over the year.

Without the closed roof record, they would have not made the playoffs.

The fan noise has been measured at over 110 db with the roof closed. No way you generate that with the roof open.

The fan noise effects opposing batters helping the total stay down.

Biased? This was the MLB rule before the Astros even built the damn_stadium. The DBacks had to open their roof in 2001 WS per orders of the MLB, despite Schilling bitching and whining about it.
